Welcome to Townsville North Queensland, gateway to the World Heritage listed Great Barrier

experiences as samples of the capability and capacity its facilities and people have to offer. The

itineraries have been listed by ‘Theme’ and can be booked directly, through a central point or

used as a list of ideas to create your own itinerary. The Themes are:

Australian underwater life

Townsville North Queensland is easily accessible as a self-drive destination or via rail or air. The

airport is located just minutes from the CBD with multiple daily services from most of Australia’s

capital cities with 23,000 airlines seats into Townsville weekly.

The class rooms are fancy, the educators and their programs are world class, but above all it’s

a place where education comes to you. You can touch it, smell it, feel it and see it in the class

room and down the road in the ‘field’. Literally, the greatest marine park is footsteps from your

accommodation, wildlife appears as soon as you drive out of the airport, you’ll see three different

landscapes between the edge of the city and your hotel (only a 10 minute drive) and, above all,

knowledge is delivered by world leading experts, most of whom have lived in Townsville

all their life.

This innovative reef education program allows participants

to meet and interact with marine park experts responsible

for managing one of the world’s largest marine protected

areas and develop an understanding of the Great Barrier Reef

ecosystem and the animals and plants that call it home.

THREE DAYS /

TWO NIGHTS

The best way to learn about the Great Barrier Reef is to live

there! This educational journey starts on shore exploring

world class facilities where you will learn how and why coral

grows. Then be transported onto the Great Barrier Reef to be

immersed in a stunning array of marine life, explosions of

colour and activity.

six dives on the Great Barrier Reef and the SS Yongala

ECOSYSTEM ADVENTURE

FULL DAY

Explore one of diving’s ‘Seven Wonders of the World’, the

SS Yongala. One of Australia’s hidden gems of maritime

history, the SS Yongala offers 100 metres of the most amazing

shipwreck and marine life diving experienced anywhere in the

world. Giant Queensland gropers, huge marble rays, schooling

barracuda, sea snakes, turtles and much more. It’s a dive you

will never forget.

THREE DAYS /

TWO NIGHTS

Snorkel in a coral tank, swim in the bays off Magnetic Island

and top it off with a day exploring the Great Barrier Reef. Your

journey commences with an overview of the Great Barrier Reef

Marine Park, followed by a guided tour of Magnetic Island

and finally a day of snorkelling one of the 3,000 reefs that

make up the exquisite necklace that is the Great Barrier Reef.

WETLANDS IN THE DRY TROPICS

An educational tour of Townsville’s world renowned coastal

wetlands only 10 minutes from the city centre. Discover

the catchment (watershed) and how nutrients in the water

flowing from the land are trapped to feed plants, in this highly

productive ecological system that supports an amazing range

of Australian wildlife and migratory species.

View local Australian wildlife in its natural environment

Identify different species of birds (some from international

points of origin)

ONE NIGHT

DISCOVER AUSTRALIAN LANDSCAPES -

A JOURNEY OF TRANSFORMATION

How are Australian landscapes formed, why are they so

diverse, what is the connection between the wetlands and

rainforest and how is a volcano created? All these questions

are answered in this informative and interactive tour through

four distinctly different landscapes in the Townsville North

Queensland Region.

Magnetic Island, Australia’s Tropical Bush Island only 20

minutes from the mainland, is the perfect place for the eco

array of eco systems that merge with the 23 bays and beaches

and meet Australia’s most northern koala colony.

About two thirds of the human body is water. It is our most

precious resource and flows through our lives and landscapes.

This educational journey starts at the source and ‘follows

the flow’ through mountain ranges, alluvial floodplains and

wetlands to the sea. Discover the importance of water to

some of the world’s most iconic ecosystems including tropic

rainforests, coastal wetlands and the Great Barrier Reef.
