elegance by design
Eyris is the result of an intense period of acoustic development encompassing all aspects of the components required to
make this loudspeaker range special.
Pioneering developmental work with our flagship hi-fi speaker, Kingdom (Golden Sound Award in Japan),
and most recently the acclaimed Dimension range (Dimension TD 12 European high end component
of the year 2001), has given Tannoy leading edge experience in wide bandwidth loudspeaker
technology. By incorporating this knowledge and expertise into Eyris a striking
combination of visual elegance and acoustic excellence has been achieved.
The Tannoy WIDEBAND High Frequency unit, fitted to all Eyris
models, uses a titanium dome of 25-micron extending high
frequency response to 44kHz. This key component of the
wide bandwidth system not only allows supremely
accurate fine detail resolution of high
frequencies but also effectively enhances
the listening experience throughout
the entire frequency range.
The double-vented design guarantees smooth and
detailed high frequency reproduction without sibilance
or harshness by eliminating diaphragm air compression.
The all new Eyris bass driver employs cone materials
carefully selected from multi fibre paper pulp mixes;
chosen for fast, tight, bass with superb transient response
and natural, open midrange qualities. The very high
level of linear cone excursion allows increased bass
power output with excellent transient behaviour at all
power levels.
The slim and elegant high rigidity cabinet design, is
available in a choice of two sumptuous real wood veneer
options; sycamore to compliment the most modern of
décor or American walnut to coordinate with more
traditional furniture styles. Floor-standing models are
supplied with four high rigidity spiked extending feet for
increased safety, stability and effective coupling to
the floor.
All Eyris models are magnetically shielded to eliminate
colour-fringing effects when placed close to televisions.
With a choice of two floorstanding
designs, one bookshelf
model, a rear effects and a
centre channel speaker, this
range will satisfy the requirement
R
for either two channel or multi
channel hi-fi or home theatre
systems. A wide choice for
different applications in a variety
of room sizes.
BREAKING SOUND BARRIERS.
Modern programme material and sources (e.g. SACD / DVDA) have driven the requirement for loudspeakers
with extended frequency bandwidth performance. Always at the forefront of audio evolution, Tannoy has
been developing just such wide bandwidth loudspeaker technology over many years.
Music contains transient information and rich harmonics beyond the range of human hearing for pure
tones. Even bass notes have leading edge transients reaching 30kHz. The Tannoy Eyris WIDEBAND
high frequency unit will accurately reproduce the leading edge of individual notes allowing the listener to
experience the entire bandwidth information of instruments.
Extended wide bandwidth frequency response to 44kHz ensures phase linearity within the aural frequency
band by ensuring optimum time and transient responses, not only resolving the fine detail of high frequencies
but also effectively enhancing the listening experience throughout the entire frequency range. Wide dispersion
characteristics and linear off-axis time and frequency responses combine to reduce the effects of listening
room absorption variations.
SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH.
Musical instruments have energy up to and beyond 100kHz, but can we perceive it?
Researchers monitoring brainwave activity on subjects exposed to wide bandwidth material to 60kHz have
conducted controlled experiments. By careful monitoring and noting subjective scores under blind conditions,
it was discovered that the listeners were indeed responding to the ultrasonic components in the music.
Further experiments have deduced that profoundly deaf subjects rely on ultrasonic detection in their
discrimination of speech and tones. These tests concluded the mechanism was through bone conduction,
probably to a small organ in the inner ear called the saccule, which is effectively wired to the cochlea, the
organ responsible for hearing as we know it.
HOW DOES IT SOUND?
The proof as always is in the listening; whatever the source - vinyl, compact disc or the latest SACD / DVDA
technology. All of the technical features and attention to detail combine in the Eyris models to provide
incredible wide band detail for the ultimate musical experience.
The addition of a Tannoy WIDEBAND High Frequency unit reduces the high frequency phase error
by moving the low pass roll off point much higher, typically -6db @ 44kHz, -18db @ 100kHz. Research
continues into the actual mechanism of the perception of sound above 20kHz, but it can be clearly shown
that the addition of a WIDEBAND HF unit will better preserve the harmonic relationship between
instruments. To illustrate this the trace below shows the phase error at 20kHz and 44kHz roll off points.
There is clearly less phase error - not just a high frequencies, but also as low as 5kHz.
