to elevated c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong>s in tyres <strong>and</strong> the re-introducti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Pb to the road surface from areas beside<br />

roads where the c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong> is elevated (principally because <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> historic road side depositi<strong>on</strong> from<br />

vehicle exhaust emissi<strong>on</strong>s).<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> particulates <strong>on</strong> road surfaces in New Zeal<strong>and</strong> also c<strong>on</strong>tain elevated c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the<br />

elements Cd, Cr, Mo, Ni, <strong>and</strong> Sb. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g>se are sources principally from tyres <strong>and</strong> brake pads. It is likely<br />

that the Sb <strong>and</strong> Mo are c<strong>on</strong>tributed by specific commercial types <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> brake pads.<br />

A proporti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the New Zeal<strong>and</strong> vehicle fleet uses catalytic c<strong>on</strong>verters. As a result the PGEs (Pt, Rh,<br />

Pd) will be emitted to the road envir<strong>on</strong>ment from the exhaust system. Internati<strong>on</strong>al data shows that<br />

there are low c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> PGEs <strong>on</strong> road surfaces. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g>re is no data <strong>on</strong> the distributi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> PGEs<br />

in the road envir<strong>on</strong>ment in New Zeal<strong>and</strong>.<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g>re is limited informati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> the nature <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> organic compounds within the road surface envir<strong>on</strong>ment.<br />

Most data that has been collected to characterise organic compounds in the road envir<strong>on</strong>ment has<br />

been <strong>on</strong> PAHs. Analysis <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> PAHs in road surface particles in New Zeal<strong>and</strong> has shown that particles<br />

<strong>on</strong> road surfaces have elevated c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a range <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> PAHs. Based <strong>on</strong> overseas informati<strong>on</strong>,<br />

there will be a range <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> substituted PAHs attached to particles <strong>on</strong> the road surface.<br />

Estimating the proporti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>taminants in stormwater derived from motor-vehicles is complex as it<br />

requires either an accurate estimate <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the amount <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>taminant emitted from vehicles or an<br />

estimate <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the amount <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>taminant produced by other sources. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g>re have been a number <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

estimates made <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the proporti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>taminants in stormwater generated within urban areas that is<br />

emitted by motor-vehicles. Previous estimates have tended to over-estimate the amount <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

c<strong>on</strong>taminant c<strong>on</strong>tributed by vehicles as the estimates were based <strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong>ly <strong>on</strong> calculated vehicle<br />

emissi<strong>on</strong> rates <strong>and</strong> general informati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> total stormwater loads. Specific work undertaken in<br />

Auckl<strong>and</strong> City is allowing some refinement <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> that estimate in New Zeal<strong>and</strong>. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> current best<br />

estimates identify the 50%ile road c<strong>on</strong>tributi<strong>on</strong> for Cu <strong>and</strong> Zn as 17 <strong>and</strong> 16% respectively. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g>re are<br />

still substantial uncertainties associated with these estimates <strong>and</strong> they will need c<strong>on</strong>tinued refinement<br />

as new data becomes available.<br />
