Adverse Food Reactions
Assessing your patient
Skin problems can have serious effects on canine and feline health and wellness. Here
are several contributing factors associated with dermatologic conditions that should
be addressed with clients/pet owners who have pets with suspected skin problems:
Clinical studies
Allergies:Common proteins found in pet foods, and environmental factors like dust, pollen or
mold can all cause allergic reactions
Parasites: Fleas, lice and mites can all contribute to mild to severe skin irritation
Hormonal imbalance: Too much or too little of certain hormones may contribute to skin problems
secondary Infections: Bacterial infections in broken skin can lead to or exacerbate skin problems

Diagnosing your patient with dietary sensitivity
Dietary sensitivity is a general term for any adverse reaction to food. The two main types
of sensitivity are food allergies and food intolerance. Here are several contributing
factors that should be addressed with clients:
Food
Beef, milk products, wheat (dogs) and fish (cats) are the most commonly documented
causes of food allergies.
Nutritional management
Dermatologic conditions and dietary sensitivity can affect the overall health and well-being
of your patients and can have a negative effect on their relationships with their owners.
Fortunately, with the right nutrition and veterinary care, pets can enjoy happier and
healthier lifestyles. Here are some helpful tips you can give clients to help ensure their pets
maintain optimal skin and dietary health:
Nutrition for patients with dermatologic conditions
Age
Breed
Food intolerance is more common in younger pets, while food allergy is more
common in adult pets. However, dietary sensitivity can occur at any age.
Siamese cats, West Highland white terriers, cocker spaniels, golden retrievers and
labrador retrievers are more likely to develop allergic skin responses.
Advanced Nutritional Solutions
• Recommend foods with high quality proteins to provide better building blocks to repair damaged skin
• Recommend foods containing high levels of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids to help nourish and
protect patients’ skin
• Recommend foods with essential antioxidants, such as vitamin E, to maintain a healthy immune
system and protect it from cellular oxidation caused by free radicals
• Recommend to clients the importance of keeping a dietary history to assist in diagnosis and successful
outcome for their pet
Educating
Clinical studies show that the use of novel protein and hydrolyzed protein foods help
manage patients with adverse reactions to food and inflammatory skin conditions.
Hill’s ® Prescription Diet ® pet foods utilize both novel and hydrolyzed proteins to provide
pet food that can help your patients with skin problems feel better fast:
Nutrition for patients with dietary sensitivity
Novel protein
Foods containing a single, novel animal protein
source (duck, egg, rabbit, salmon or venison) are not
generally associated with adverse food reactions
Foods containing a limited number of digestible
novel meat protein and carbohydrate ingredients
help to avoid common food allergies
Novel proteins help to limit the amount of
undigested protein in the gastrointestinal tract
able to provoke an allergic reaction
Novel-protein foods with enhanced levels of
omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants help manage
dogs with chronic, non-seasonal pruritic dermatitis
and/or food allergy
Hydrolyzed protein
Clinically proven hydrolyzed protein
technology virtually eliminates the potential for
adverse food reactions
Hydrolyzed proteins are too small to bridge
lgE receptors — allowing them to escape
immune system detection, which helps to
avoid adverse reactions
Hydrolyzed protein solutions are ideal for pets
on elimination feeding trials
Hydrolyzed protein solutions with added
antioxidants and increased omega fatty acids
help to manage associated inflammation and
maintain skin barrier function
Food allergies: An immune reaction to
a particular ingredient, usually a protein, may
last a lifetime, so discovering and eliminating
exposure to the ingredient is essential for
recommending an appropriate pet food.
Food intolerance: Recommend foods that
meet the nutritional requirements of patients
with dietary sensitivity and avoid foods that
cause negative reaction.
