2 Magnolia Manor

from the president’s desk

I am proud to say this first

issue of 2009 focuses on caregiving,

which I believe to be very appropriate

for a United Methodist Ministry

that cares for older adults across

South Georgia. There are many in

the healthcare business who have

not discovered the need to unite

healthcare delivery with Christian

compassion in order to provide a

holistic approach in caring for the

mind, body and spirit. However, for

Magnolia Manor, there is great understanding for this. As a

provider in the healthcare industry, we are accountable to local,

state and federal governments for the care we give older adults,

just as all other healthcare systems. But, as a Christian organization,

we are accountable to each other, families of our residents,

the South Georgia Annual Conference, United Methodist

congregates and donors, and most importantly, to our Savior.

So, caregiving takes on quite a different connotation for us.

In our ministry, our staff lays the framework for providing

care for our residents. This includes ensuring physical,

social, and emotional needs are met like nutrition, assistance

with activities of daily living, Renaissance Living Program,

medication management, and therapy. Once the framework is

complete, other components are added to complete the fabric of

our structure. These components include spiritual care provided

through our chaplaincy program, preserving familial connections

through visits from family and friends, maintaining a connection

to the community through volunteers, and benefiting

from companionship provided by each one of those listed

above. Additionally, residents are able to value the security of

not having to leave their homes due to inability to pay, which

is made possible through League of the Good Samaritan

donors.

Perhaps all healthcare providers have a common goal:

to treat the patient or resident with dignity and deliver a level of

healthcare that allows them to live life with the highest quality

possible. For Magnolia Manor, we offer many additional services

to ensure it happens.

Mark R. Todd

Spiritual Care

Program Complete

with Four Approved Endorsed Chaplains

R

everend Joy Wilson, a United Methodist minister,

was appointed to Extension Ministry as a

Chaplain with Magnolia Manor nearly eight months

ago. Extension Ministry is a specialized ministry

beyond the walls of the local church. The United

Methodist Book of Discipline states that clergy

appointed to ministries of pastoral care in specialized

settings -including but not limited to ministry in the

military, correctional institutions, the Department of

Veterans Affairs, health-care settings, retirement communities,

pastoral counseling, marriage and family

counseling, workplace ministries, community service

ministries, and other related ministry settings, shall

receive ecclesiastical endorsement. Magnolia Manor

is pleased to announce Reverend Wilson recently

completed all requirements and has been officially

endorsed as a chaplain.

Endorsement is an affirmation that a person is,

or will be, performing a valid Extension Ministry consistent

with the covenantal community of The United

Methodist Church and has presented evidence of having

the special education, experience, and skills

necessary to perform that ministry, because all people

have the right to receive the full ministry of the gospel

of Jesus Christ. Endorsement is the process established

by the church to ensure that people providing

ministry in these settings are capable and appropriate

representatives of the denomination. In order to

assure high standards of competence and keep faith

with ecumenical agreements concerning uniform standards

for ministry in specialized settings, the United

Methodist Endorsing Agency (UMEA) is mandated by

the church to oversee and review all candidates who

seek endorsement.

In order to complete the requirements to

become an Endorsed Chaplain, Reverend Wilson had

to:

- Provide a life history and statement of her understanding

of ministry in the setting for which she was

seeking endorsement.

- Give references from her bishop, district superintendent,

and two others who are familiar with her gifts

and graces of ministry.

- Meet with the interview committee of endorsed

chaplains and pastoral counselors who conducted a

peer review, which examined areas of her moral and

emotional stability and ability to face crises and adversity,

her ability to evaluate her present ministry, to

clearly express her theory of Christian ministry, her

motivation, continuing education, sense of humor,

cooperativeness, her understanding of the difference

in institutional and congregational ministry, and her

ability as a pastor.

Reverend Wilson is a great addition to the

Magnolia Manor community. She and husband

Carlton reside in Ellaville. With Reverend Wilson’s

endorsement, all Magnolia Manor Chaplains have

now received the full credentials of Approved

Endorsed Chaplains.

The Giving Place

A

ccording to the

Bureau of Labor

Statistics, there were

more than 5.5 million

combined jobs in the

United States in 2006

for Registered Nurses

(RN), Licensed

Practical Nurses (LPN)

and Nurse Aides (CNA

or RCA). The men and

women filling these

positions provided the

majority of the care given by hospitals, residential

care centers, health care centers, home health

agencies and clinics. However, nurse aides are

the primary caregivers in nursing centers and

assisted living centers like Magnolia Manor. In

fact, more than 52% of America’s 2.3 million

nurse aide jobs are positions held in nursing centers

and residential care centers.

Caregiving goes beyond daily nursing

care. With the average age of assisted living residents

being 78, oftentimes the

most needed service is nutrition.

Our Dietary Managers develop

meal guidelines for residents who

suffer diabetes, high cholesterol,

and other chronic conditions,

while our staff prepares and

serves the meals. Although

Independent Living residents benefit

from nutrition, much of the

care given is housekeeping and

maintenance so residents can

spend more time enjoying retirement

without the upkeep and

maintenance.

However, there is much

more to the spectrum of caregiving

than nursing, dietary, housekeeping and

maintenance. Caregiving isn’t a department, it’s

a commitment. What distinguishes Magnolia

Manor from other retirement living communities

4 Magnolia Manor

Caring for

the Mind,

Body and

Spirit for

nearly 2,000

Older Adults

across

South

Georgia

is our commitment to

Christian caregiving. Christian caregiving is a

commitment to provide care with kindness, sensitivity,

respect, wisdom and compassion. Each

of these being a characteristic of Servant

Leadership discussed in the Bible and told

through passages such as Luke 10:25-37, the

parable of the Good Samaritan. The story tells

of a man who fell among robbers, and was beaten,

stripped and left for dead. Both a priest and

Levite passed him by, but a Samaritan helped

him, bound his wounds, put him on

his animal and took him to an inn

where he paid for his care. The

Samaritan, a caregiver, showed

compassion. Christian compassion

is carried through today to our residents

in every facet of their lives

through staff, churches, volunteers,

families, donors, and neighbors.

Our endless support system of

Samaritans give care in a number of

ways. Many Samaritans give time,

while others give money. Many give

support, while others give opportunity.

In Christian caregiving, each of

us gives compassion.

As a United Methodist ministry for

Older Adults, we go beyond giving care to our

residents. We give Christian care for the mind,

body and spirit of nearly 2,000 older adults. This

is why we call Magnolia Manor the Giving Place.

Homecoming Celebration

Supporting the League of the Good Samaritan, Magnolia Manor’s Resident Assistance Program

Magnolia Manor held its First Annual

Homecoming Celebration on November 14-15th,

2008. Celebrating nearly 50 years of serving older

adults in South Georgia through this United Methodist

Ministry, Magnolia Manor extended invitations to residents,

families of both current and former residents,

and community members to unite on-campus for this

event.

All proceeds benefited the League of the Good

Samaritan. It is through this generosity we maintain

our promise “no one, having chosen to come to

Magnolia Manor, will ever have to leave due to an

inability to pay for care”.

The Magnolia Manor Golf Challenge was held

on Friday, November 21st at the Griffin Bell Golf

Links in Americus with Glover Foods winning the

tournament. Saturday’s events included the Walk of

Love, Samaritan Crop, Trolley Tour, BBQ Chicken

Lunch, Silent Auction, Art Show and Yard Sale.

A special thank you goes out to those employees,

residents, donors, and volunteers whose contributions

made this event a huge success. A very special

thanks goes to several Americus campus residents

whose enormous efforts were invaluable. Juanita and

Ray Wilder raised over $10,000 for the League through

the Walk of Love and the Yard Sale, while Reverend

Bill Dupree sold over 150 tickets for the BBQ Chicken

Plate Lunch. All efforts combined raised over $27,000

for the League of the Good Samaritan.

A day filled with volunteerism, generosity, and compassion

The Magnolia Manor Golf Challenge was sponsored by

local donors, residents, and businesses.

Magnolia Manor staff donated

theme baskets for the auction while local businesses donated

special items such as artwork and gift certificates.

The Americus Fire Department volunteers their time to cook

Proceeds from October and November Yard Sales benefited

Whatever God Calls

You to Do, Do It

W

“ hatever God calls you to do, do it” has been Zena Dixon’s

motto for more than 50 years. More than fifty years ago, Zena moved to

Thomasville to teach. She soon married, moved her membership to the

First United Methodist Church in Thomasville, and began teaching in

the public school system. She has served as President of the United

Methodist Women three times and, her efforts in coordinating volunteers

won her a Humanitarian Award. But for her serving her church,

family, and community has been what God called her to do.

Volunteering, educating, and serving is what she does best and

in 1994, Zena volunteered to serve on the Board of Advisors for

Magnolia Manor South. She served as President and under her leadership,

the Board became more responsive to the needs of the older adults

of Magnolia Manor South. She called for Magnolia Manor South to

have more exposure in churches and within the community and always

remained committed to ensuring residents would receive a good quality

of life. Her efforts were recently recognized when she was given the

Dr. S. Walter Martin Award for Extraordinary Visionary Leadership.

Dr. S. Walter Martin was one of the original visionaries in building a

United Methodist Retirement Community in South Georgia. His

vision layed the groundwork for Magnolia Manor South in Moultrie.

Zena continues to serve the ministry, unselfishly, with honor and dedication.

Caring Through Giving

Magnolia Manor Mother’s Day Offering

O

ffering care for senior adults is the heart of

Magnolia Manor's purpose and mission. We are

blessed with wonderful staff at each of eight

campuses who are essential to the offering of

care to each of our residents. Some staff offer

care directly---nurses, certified nursing assistants,

and chaplains just to mention a few. Other

For the forty-fifth year of our existence we

kept the promise: "No older adult will have

to leave Magnolia Manor due to their

inability to fully pay for the cost of care."

administrative staff members offer care indirectly,

providing the structure and support needed

for seniors to thrive in a loving residential environment.

Whether directly or indirectly, all of

Magnolia Manor's staff have "offering care" as

their purpose.

Beyond our staff, donors are essential to the

caring giving of Magnolia Manor. While staff

members offer care to our residents, donors

show their care through the Magnolia Manor

Day Offering. Traditionally United Methodist

Churches have celebrated Magnolia Manor Day

on Mother's Day, the second Sunday in May---

this year, May 10. However, any Sunday is a

great day for a congregation to open its heart to

senior adults with a special offering for Magnolia

Manor.

Last year Magnolia Manor spent $1,500,000

to care for 178 of the most vulnerable of older

adults through the League of the Good

Samaritan. For the forty-fifth year of our existence

we kept the promise: "No older adult will

have to leave Magnolia Manor due to their

inability to fully pay for the cost of care." With

their sacrificial gifts, donors make it possible for

us to offer care to senior adults who could not

otherwise afford the cost of care. During 2008

the cost of providing League assistance averaged

$8,400 for the year or $700 for each month

or $175 for each week or $25 for each day of

care.

Plan to renew your legacy of caring through

giving with your gift to the Magnolia Manor Day

offering for The League of the Good Samaritan

on Mothers' Day, May 10. The care we offer

comes from the hands of staff and the hearts of

donors. Thank you for your partnership in this

ministry of care for senior adults.

Youth Spreads Cheer to Columbus Residents

Fifteen-year old Tiffany Winchester

wasn’t sure what to expect when she

developed a Community Service

Project for school credit this past summer.

Her project consisted of making

blankets for Assisted Living residents

at Magnolia Manor of Columbus.

During the course of the project,

Tiffany found herself volunteering and

visiting with residents. The residents

cherished each visit and looked forward

to seeing her smiling face. In a

letter to Magnolia Manor, Tiffany

writes, “I want to thank you for giving

me the opportunity to work with the

staff and residents of Magnolia Manor

of Columbus. It has been a wonderful

experience for me”. The feeling was

certainly mutual.
