Health & Safety
Swimming is healthy and fun, and Christchurch City Council swimming
pools provide a safe and healthy environment thanks to their advanced
filtration systems. But there are bugs and infections in the community
that can be brought into the water and spread. It’s important that you
as a swimmer (or the parent of a swimmer) do your bit to stop bugs and
infections from getting into pools.
Before you swim:
• If you or your children have had diarrhoea (upset tummy) in the
last two weeks - don’t go into the water.
• Take children to the toilet before they swim and wash hands after
going to the toilet.
• Where possible shower yourself and your children before you put
your togs on. Use soap and warm water.
• Your baby should wear approved swimming nappies (Little
Swimmers) and these can be purchased at reception. Cloth or
disposable nappies are not permitted. Remember to wash your
hands after changing your baby.
Pool Alone Policy
Children aged under 8 years must be actively supervised by a caregiver
who is at least 16 years old before and after lessons. Actively supervised
means watching your child at all times and being able to provide
immediate assistance – dropping children at the door is not acceptable.
If your pre-schooler (children under 5 years old) wishes to swim
before or after their lesson, you must be in the water and within arms
reach to provide assistance when required. Children under 3 must be
accompanied by an adult during lessons.

LEARN TO SWIM
Swimsmart provides
a skill for life
Living in Christchurch means you’re never far from the
water. With an abundance of river, beach, lake and indoor
swimming spots there are opportunities year round for
families to play together in the water.
The Christchurch City Council’s Swimsmart programme
teaches children the core life skill of swimming, vital for
safe play in the water. The outcomes of the Swimsmart
programme are supported by Swimming New Zealand
and Water Safety New Zealand’s Swim for Life initiative.
Swimsmart is designed to build children’s confidence
and progressively develop their skills so they can swim
and increase their chances of survival. Water Safety New
Zealand has set a benchmark of swimming 200m as the
level necessary to achieve this.
Children completing the Swimsmart programme will receive
a special 200m certificate. This shows they have the skills
necessary to enjoy New Zealand’s many water opportunities
when accompanied with adequate adult supervision.
