Crossing with Patroller, and Point, Pause and Proceed

Directions: Members of the patrol team demonstrate “Point, Pause and Proceed” and
how to cross at a patrolled crosswalk. Two patrollers set up imaginary crosswalk for
demonstration. One patroller acts as narrator to read script to class.
NARRATOR
Now that school is back in for another year, we would like to remind you how to cross the street
using the Point, Pause and Proceed method. This is the way you should cross any street when
school patrollers are not on duty. First, the patrollers will set up at the corner and we will show you
how to cross when school patrollers are on duty.
ACTIVITY: Patrollers take their places at opposite sides of imaginary crosswalk. Two pedestrians
walk up behind one patroller.
NARRATOR
When you want to cross a patrolled crosswalk, you just have to walk up behind the patroller and
wait for their instructions. Remember to stand quietly so you will be able to hear when the patroller
instructs you to cross. The patrollers will now cross the students.
ACTIVITY: Patrollers go through all the necessary steps to cross students.
NARRATOR
Now the patrollers will leave the crosswalk and the students will demonstrate Point, Pause and
Proceed.
ACTIVITY: Patrollers leave crosswalk and students approach crosswalk again. Students go through
the motions for crossing the street as the narrator speaks.
NARRATOR
When you are crossing a street without patrollers, you should use the Point, Pause and Proceed
method. The first step is to look all ways for traffic. Next, you should POINT across the road with
your arm to signal that you want to cross. Now PAUSE until all vehicles stop. Then PROCEED
across the street with your arm extended. Make eye contact with the drivers, and make sure to look
for vehicles in EACH LANE that you cross. If you cannot see into a lane, stop and take a good look
before you cross.

Good morning/afternoon, this is ___________ with a traffic safety
message from the AMA School Safety Patrol.
Going back to school means crossing the street several times a day.
We want to remind you to always use the crosswalk whenever you cross
the street, and always to Point, Pause and Proceed.
If you cannot remember how to do Point, Pause and Proceed, I will
remind you. When you get to a crosswalk, stop and POINT your arm
across the street. Then PAUSE while you look all ways for traffic. Wait for
all vehicles to stop, and then make eye contact with each driver. Then
PROCEED across the street, keeping your arm up and pointing in the
direction you are walking. Remember to watch for vehicles in each lane as
you walk across the street
And there it is…Point, Pause and Proceed. The easy and safe way
to cross the street.
