Environmental Consequences<br />
Aside from the aesthetically unpleas<strong>in</strong>g consequence <strong>of</strong><br />
rubbish be<strong>in</strong>g dumped <strong>in</strong> bushland, it may also result <strong>in</strong> the<br />
follow<strong>in</strong>g impacts to the environment:<br />
• <strong>Rubbish</strong> such as fast food packag<strong>in</strong>g etc. could attract<br />
unwanted scavengers e.g. ravens, ibis, stray dogs and<br />
cats.<br />
• <strong>Dump<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>of</strong> garden waste can <strong>in</strong>troduce non-native<br />
garden plant varieties that will ultimately become weeds<br />
and compete aga<strong>in</strong>st native plants for space, water,<br />
nutrients and light.<br />
• Garden prun<strong>in</strong>gs and lawn clipp<strong>in</strong>gs left to dry out can<br />
pose a serious fire risk.<br />
• Excess nutrient load<strong>in</strong>g from dog faeces and other forms<br />
<strong>of</strong> domestic rubbish can <strong>in</strong>undate the naturally nutrient<br />
deficient local soils result<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> outbreaks <strong>of</strong> weeds.<br />
• Plastic bags and other domestic items may <strong>of</strong>ten prove<br />
a direct hazard to various native birds and animals.<br />
• <strong>Dump<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>of</strong> domestic rubbish i.e. kitchen waste, may<br />
pose a helath risk and contribute to the spread <strong>of</strong> disease.<br />
<strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> Stirl<strong>in</strong>g Bush Land<br />
The health and susta<strong>in</strong>ability <strong>of</strong> the <strong>City</strong>’s 470 hectares <strong>of</strong><br />
bushland is under threat due to the cont<strong>in</strong>ued dump<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong><br />
rubbish.<br />
The act <strong>of</strong> dump<strong>in</strong>g may be <strong>in</strong> a variety <strong>of</strong> forms. The most<br />
common forms <strong>of</strong> rubbish <strong>in</strong> and around <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> Stirl<strong>in</strong>g<br />
bushland <strong>in</strong>clude:<br />
• build<strong>in</strong>g materials e.g. rubble, sand;<br />
• <strong>in</strong>dustrial rubbish e.g. boxes, cardboard cartons and<br />
pack<strong>in</strong>g material;<br />
• garden prun<strong>in</strong>gs and lawn clipp<strong>in</strong>gs;<br />
• general domestic rubbish;<br />
• dog faeces; and<br />
• litter.<br />
All forms <strong>of</strong> dump<strong>in</strong>g are illegal. If caught <strong>in</strong> the act, f<strong>in</strong>es will<br />
be imposed.<br />
Be responsible and dispose <strong>of</strong> rubbish thoughtfully.<br />
What Can Be Done?<br />
Everyone can do their part to ensure that all areas <strong>of</strong> native<br />
bushland rema<strong>in</strong> prist<strong>in</strong>e and susta<strong>in</strong>able.<br />
By dispos<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> rubbish <strong>in</strong> a responsible manner you can<br />
make a valued contribution toward the conservation <strong>of</strong> urban<br />
bushland.<br />
Options for correct disposal <strong>in</strong>clude:<br />
• Tak<strong>in</strong>g full advantage <strong>of</strong> verge side collections - the <strong>City</strong><br />
<strong>of</strong>fers residents four verge collections per year. You will<br />
receive notification <strong>in</strong> your letterbox two weeks prior<br />
to each collection. Please do not put rubbish on your<br />
verge until this notification is received.<br />
• Compost garden waste and reuse as mulch.<br />
• Take domestic rubbish and build<strong>in</strong>g material to the<br />
Recycl<strong>in</strong>g Centre, 238 Balcatta Road, Balcatta.<br />
• Pick<strong>in</strong>g up after your dog when walk<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> bushland<br />
reserves and dispose <strong>of</strong> the waste <strong>in</strong> one <strong>of</strong> the b<strong>in</strong>s<br />
provided.
