Seven games in two days, warm ups, warm

downs, long bus rides, trips to the movies and lots

of laughs. This is how the St Luke’s netball team

competing in the Queensland Independent

Secondary Schools Netball Carnival spent one

week of the holidays. The week started with the

Official Opening Ceremony held in conjunction

with the Confraternity Rugby League Carnival

which was held at the ANZ Stadium. About 1000

competitors and officials were treated to an

entertaining presentation about Alpha and

Monday, the competition proper started and the

team had two close matches before gaining a win

against Chisholm College. The remaining pool

rounds were closely contested with another win

against Aquinas College. The team was placed

into Division 4 and competed in the Quarter Final

round on Thursday against Xavier College from

Hervey Bay. This match was fiercely contested

between the two teams with St Luke’s taking out

the match by 3 goals in the last quarter. A loss by

one goal in the Semi Finals unluckily left St Luke’s

in fourth place.

During the week all players competed to their best

ability and some great netball was watched by the

spectators. Congratulations to Rhianna Johnson

who was voted Most Valuable Player by the

opposition teams. Playing in the centre court

Rhianna never gave up and defended and

attacked well in every game. Thanks also to the

parents who travelled to Brisbane to support the

team and to Mrs Bronwyn Walker who again

excelled as Manager.

St Luke’s Rowers @ Central Queensland Regional Schools Regatta

When the BDSSS Head of the River finishes, most think that’s it for Rowing for the year. Not so, as most of our Rowing

students continue training hard to compete for the rest of the year. Congratulations to all rowing students and coaches who

have been training since the BDSSS regattas. At a recent Central Queensland regional regatta St Luke’s students performed

well. Rick Bennett came second in the final of his U/14 single scull after coming first in his heat and first in his semi final.

Miles Edmondson Clark came fourth in his heat of same division. In the Year 8 Double scull Rick and Miles came fourth in

their heat. In the girls U/15 single scull, St Luke’s girls dominated with Demi Pressler-McHugh winning first place, Emma

Pressler-McHugh coming third and Sarah Dimes coming fourth after strong placings by all in their heats and semi finals.

Melanie Schmeider came first in her heat of this division but hurt her knee and this ruled out her chances to progress. In the

year 9 girls Double scull Demi and Emma won first place in the final and Melanie and Sarah came fourth in the final. In the

year 9 girls quad scull with Melanie out due to her knee, Sunny Maples-Stapleton who has been training as coxen stepped

in and rowed and the team came a creditable second in the final. In the open girls Sophie Jarvis won her heat in the single

scull and also won the open girls Double scull final with her partner Bec Surmon. The students and coaches and parents

have had a development camp at Bucca last weekend and next weekend travel again to Kawana to the South East

Queensland championships. Then the State school championships in Rockhampton in September followed by State Club

Championships in December. We wish them all the best in their upcoming races. In the last week of this term Rob Walker will

be in the school doing talent identification tests on our students from Year 7 to Year 11 and we want to see if there are any

other students who would like to give Rowing a chance and may not know that they may be suited to doing really well at

Rowing. On the Thursday of the last week of Term 3, Rob Walker will take a Rowing activity as part of the Sports Expo.

Thanks to all the students, parents and coaches who continue to fly the St Luke’s Rowing flag.
