Dear Cricketers and Parents 

Welcome to another summer of Cricket at TSS. I hope the 

season is an enjoyable and successful one for you. With Ist XI 

pre-season training commencing in August 2011 and the GPS 

season commencing in January 2012, the cricket season at TSS 

provides a great opportunity for enjoyment and participation for all cricketers and 

parents and a chance to continue to improve knowledge and skills of this great game. 

Boys, congratulations on your selection to play cricket for TSS this season. Your season 

will be enjoyable and successful if you practise hard, set goals for yourself, remain 

calm during challenging times, and concentrate on the things that you have control 

over. 

Please read the information included in this comprehensive handbook.

• Attend meetings when requested 

• Visit the cricket notice board 

• Pass on important information sent by flyers to your parents (Don’t leave them in 

the bottom of your school or cricket bag!)

From the Director of Cricket 

TSS Cricket has had an outstanding 

preparation for GPS season 2012. 

TSS Cricket continues as a hub for 

participation and player development 

on the Gold Coast. There is a continuing 

focus on encouraging fun participation 

in the sport with your school ‘mates’ 

and the support to be the best cricketer 

you can be. In 2011 GPS Season TSS 

Cricket enjoyed a higher success rate 

in ‘A’ Teams and 1stXI has now won 

the Australia Post State Cup (out 

of 160 schools) three years running 

2009/2010/2011 and the Earle Williams 

Cup twice as 1stXI GPS premiers after 

28 years. TSS again has supported more 

representative players at regional, state 

and national level and also enjoyed 

a close partnership with Queensland 

Cricket, Gold Coast Juniors and the 

Gold Coast Dolphins Cricket Club. This 

success has come on the back of: 

• Extensive Pre-Christmas Skill 

Development and involvement in 

Club Cricket 

• Support towards representative 

selection for players 

• Development of TSS Cricket Camps 

• Structured and deliberate practise 

in the GPS Season 

• Continued Development of the 

Festival of Cricket Weekend 

• Strong Cricket Support Group 

• Outstanding Staff, Grounds and 

School Support 

Preparations towards GPS season 2011 

has focused on mentor coaches assisting 

in the specific skill disciplines in cricket 

and ‘game sense’ amongst our cricketers 

by playing more 

games and ‘Training 

to compete’. Training 

methods that are fun 

and assist key skills for 

B-D Teams has also 

been partaken. Upcoming events include 

cricket camps in the Sept/Dec/Jan school 

holidays as well as the 1stXI squad and 

Year 8-10 A teams training and playing 

and touring from August onwards. 

TSS Cricket Tours that have been 

conducted are: 

• Year 8-10A Development Team Tour 

to NQ Sept–Oct 2011 

• 1stXI Tour Jan 2012 to Perth 

TSS cricket also enjoys improved facilities 

with surrounds of the ‘Shed’ upgraded, 

purchase of a ‘Super Soper’ and new 

Pitch Roller as well as development of 

new clothing with a ‘Sun Smart’ TSS 

Cricket Playing Shirt and Wide Brimmed 

Playing Hat for season 2012 onwards.

Match Day & Wet Weather Procedures 

For home matches boys should arrive at least 60 minutes before the scheduled start 

of play. Boys should dress in correct uniform (refer to uniform p.12 in this manual). 

This will allow enough time for a correct warm-up and covers to be folded. 

For away matches boys should arrive at least 15 minutes before the bus departure 

time. 

It is up to boys to find out game and bus times. These will be displayed on the 

School Sports Noticeboard and on the School website. 

WET WEATHER PROcEDURE 

In the event of rain on days prior to the Saturday match, an announcement will be 

made regarding cancellation at school assembly on Thursday. Should rain fall on 

Friday/Saturday, phone the TSS Sports Info hotline: Wet Weather Line – 07 5531 

9860 or check the TSS website. We do make every attempt to play where possible!

Playing and Preparation Overview 2012 

MENTAl 

1. Get players to have and know their 

individual performance routines 

(eg. Consistent run up for Bowlers, 

Consistent set up for Batters and 

Fielders move in with bowlers/ hands 

up ready) 

2. Develop team rules for conduct, 

dress, warm ups, training and playing. 

TEcHNIcAl 

Cricket is a skill game requiring high 

levels of technique. To ensure success 

the following key technical aspects 

need to be reinforced: 

1. Batting: Setup with centre marked, 

grip, stance and backlift correct. 

Control bat with top hand. 

Footwork either forward or back 

2. Pace Bowling: Run up - efficient 

running technique and in 

line with target. 

Action – compact and in line with 

target. 

Seam – keep the seam upright to 

allow movement. 

3. Spin Bowling: Run up – relatively 

straight and relaxed. 

Action – strong front arm, high 

release point to allow over spin on 

ball 

4. Fielding: Move in with the bowler 

in an athletic position/ hands open 

and up 

PHYSIcAl 

1. Use TSS warm up plan (overleaf) 

2. R.I.C.E. and D.R.A.B.C. all injuries and

Clothing & Equipment Expectations 

The Southport School Cricket has 

a proud history and pride in our 

appearance. Whilst summer uniform 

is not required for travel to and from 

games there are expectations and safety 

regulations for uniform that need to be 

adhered to. These expectations are as 

follows: 

TRAINING AND TRAVEllING TO AND FROM 

GAMES: 

A TSS white training/ PE/ House shirt, 

navy shorts are required. During games, 

players are able to change from their 

whites to their training gear provided 

socks and sports shoes are worn. 

Further training accessories include 

a navy TSS peak cap, or white wide 

brimmed cricket hat, and TSS white 

socks with mostly white training sport 

shoes. Skateboard or other shoes are 

not appropriate. No open footwear is to 

be worn at any time. The hat and socks 

are available from the TSS Uniform Shop 

located in the Centenary Centre. 

Footwear includes white TSS socks and 

white cricket shoes. As most games at 

TSS are on turf, spikes are essential. 

Rubber shoes do not provide the 

necessary grip on a turf wicket, but 

rubbers should be taken as well as the 

spikes to other schools where turf may 

not be available. 

Hats are essential and must be either a 

wide brim type in white, or a navy TSS 

Peak cap or preferably, the navy TSS 

‘Baggy’ cap. Both hats are available from 

the TSS uniform shop. Sunglasses are 

recommended for sun safety. 

Please be aware that students wearing 

incorrect uniform may be refused to play. 

All protective thigh pads and chest pads 

are to be worn under the whites. All 

boys are encouraged to use their own 

personal cricket gear. Team kits will be 

supplied, but boys without their own kits 

should at least have their own gloves and 

box. 

Please be aware that students wearing 

incorrect uniform may be refused to play. 

GAMES: 

Boys are to wear long white trousers 

which can be purchased from any 

supplier. Shirts must be of the TSS 

approved cricket shirt that is only 

purchased from The Store. It is an 

expectation of the etiquette of the game 

of cricket that shirts are tucked in and 

your appearance to be tidy.

Selection Policy & Age Group Criteria 

Teams are selected in conjunction with 

the Team Coach, Head Skills Coach, 

Cricket Manager and Director of Cricket. 

The selection is based on a player’s 

performance, attendance at training and 

games, attitude (at training as well as 

matches including uniform), behaviour 

and team balance. 

The best possible team is selected for A 

teams and 1st XI each round. 

In lower grades endeavour is made to 

ensure that players receive opportunities 

to participate in a meaningful way. 

Players are encouraged to commit to 

playing the season to ensure teams are 

maintained. Players who are irregular in 

attendance cannot expect games every 

round. 

Teams and venues for matches are 

posted on the TSS Sports Website 

and Sports Noticeboard every Friday 

prior to the weekend match. It is the 

responsibility of all players to notify 

coaches of their unavailability no later 

than the Wednesday afternoon training 

session preceding Saturday’s match. 

Players must attend training each week. 

Year level now determines the grouping 

of all players, however, the selection 

panel can reserve the right to play 

selected cricketers in higher age groups 

such as 1st XI.

GPS Rules of Competition 

SEcTION A: cODE OF BEHAVIOUR 

– MATcH DAY 

Adapted from ‘Fair Play in School Sport 

– Code of Behaviour’: Australian Schools 

Sports Council. 

Players, coaches, parents, spectators and 

officials are encouraged to familiarise 

themselves with the GPS Codes of 

Behaviour that apply to all GPS activities. 

PlAYERS 

1. Play by the rules. 

2. Cooperate with and respect game 

officials and their decisions. 

3. Abstain from verbal abuse, 

distraction, or provoking of officials 

or other players – see section on 

Sledging on next page. 

4. Treat all players as you would like to 

be treated and respect the property 

of others. 

5. Leave the field immediately and 

without dissent, when given out. 

6. As an incoming batsman, pass the 

dismissed player on the field of 

play and go directly to your batting 

position without conversation. 

7. Remain off the pitch area prior to 

the match and avoid damage to the 

playing area during the match. 

8. Abstain from excessive 

encouragement of bowlers / teammates 

between deliveries. 

9. When batting, be ready to bat when 

the bowler is at his mark, and, when 

bowling, complete your over without 

delay. 

cOAcHES 

1. Set a good example for all players. 

2. Encourage and create opportunities 

to develop individual and team skills. 

3. Ensure your players are friendly 

towards officials and opponents. 

4. Remove from the field of play, any 

of your players whose behaviour is 

unacceptable. 

PARENTS AND SPEcTATORS 

1. Provide a model of good behaviour 

for all players. 

2. Demonstrate courtesy towards 

all players, all officials, and all 

spectators. 

3. Encourage honest effort, skilled 

performance, and team loyalty. 

4. Let game officials conduct the match 

without interference yet be willing to 

provide assistance if requested. 

ADMINISTRATORS AND OFFIcIAlS 

1. Ensure the equipment and conditions 

are safe for the skill level of the boys 

involved. 

2. Ensure everyone involved, including 

parents, understands their 

responsibilities regarding fair play 

and appropriate behaviour. 

3. Officiate without bias, emphasise 

skill and enjoyment, encourage both 

teams, and set a good example. 

4. Be consistent, courteous, and helpful 

towards all participants. 

5. Ensure that the ‘spirit of the game’ is 

not lost by overcalling violations.

6. Ensure that coaches and officials 

provide adequate supervision of the 

players. 

SlEDGING 

The Headmasters of GPS schools have 

determined that ‘sledging’ has no place 

in GPS cricket. This practice is forbidden. 

The Headmasters have directed that 

players: 

a) are to make no derogatory comments 

at an opposing player; 

b) are to make no derogatory comments 

about an opposing player, and 

c) are to make no comments or noises 

at critical times during the game – eg. 

when a batsman is about to face a 

ball or when a bowler is running in to 

bowl. 

Players who breach these directions will 

face the following consequences: 

a) they will be issued with a yellow card 

as a warning for a first offence in a 

match; 

b) they will be sent from the field of play 

for a second offence in a match; 

c) if sent off, they will not be replaced 

for the remainder of the game; 

d) when a player is sent off, he will suffer 

a further penalty of missing the next 

game in which he would otherwise 

have played. 

Health and Safety 

Clearly, TSS Cricket endeavours to 

conduct appropriate activities and 

provide safe facilities and equipment to 

all TSS cricketers. There are a couple of 

key issues that do need emphasising to 

minimise the risk of injury in training and 

playing cricket at the School. 

HElMETS/ PROTEcTORS 

Under School Workplace Health and 

Safety requirements, it is compulsory 

that batters, close in fielders and 

wicketkeepers standing up to the 

wickets must wear a helmet with a face 

guard and groin protector in practice 

and games when a hard ball is used. 

All players are encouraged to purchase 

their own helmet and protector or use 

those provided by the School and have 

it correctly fitted. 

NET PRAcTIcE 

Under School Workplace Health and 

Safety requirements it is compulsory 

that, when training in net facilities, the 

following rules be followed to minimise 

risk of injury: 

1. If no coach present, or nets are 

chained, nets are not to be used. 

2. Full protective gear (Incl Helmet/ 

Protector) to be worn when using a 

hard ball. 

3. Wear closed-in shoes but not 

spikes. 

4. No other people in net other than 

batsman and bowler. 

5. Only one person at batters end. 

6. Keep playing surface clean. 

7. Always keep eye on action in nets.

Cricket Support Group
