Glorious way to
raise funds for
Georgia Williams
Southwater
grand opening
TWC IS hosting the
official opening of
Southwater on Saturday
18 October
with a day of celebration and
entertainments.
There’ll be a fun packed
day with food and craft stalls
and live music and dance
and entertainment from a
range of street theatre artists,
plus a host of activities
in Telford Town Park and
Southwater One.
It marks the official opening
of Southwater, the new
£250m development which
has transformed the town
centre. It commences at
2pm.
It ends with a bang when
Free Radio presenters Sam
and Mark take the stage at
6pm, counting down to a
grand opening ceremony
with a procession of giant
fish lanterns around the lake,
ending with fireworks around
8.30pm.
Mike Everitt, winner of the
council’s “Telfie” competition
will push the plunger to
start the parade. The “Telfie”

take a selfie in front of one of
Southwater’s new features.
Southwater’s new facilities
will be open on the day,
the 11 screen IMAX Cineworld,
ice rink, tenpin bowling
and Mecca Bingo plus
Bella Italia, Mimosa, Harvester,
Chimichanga, Pizza Express,
Nando’s and Zizzi’s.
The event’s free, all are
invited to come and join the
fun.
The Southwater development
is a public/private sector
partnership to launch a
vibrant night time economy
and raise Telford’s profile as
a regional destination.
Council leader, Kuldip
Sahota, said: “Southwater
has already proved a huge
success with thousands of
visitors to the Southwater
One building, lake and new
restaurants and cinema.
“We’ve been delighted by
the response from residents
and their enthusiasm for the
new development.
“The official opening will
be a time to celebrate what
we’ve achieved and for everyone
to come and have a
fun day and enjoy everything
Southwater has to offer.”
What a glorious day for the
Hands Down the Wrekin
2014 event, to raise money
for the Georgia Williams
Trust, writes Marina Higgins
of the Wrekin News.
The event was marshalled
at every stage, from parking
in the huge field by the
Buckatree Hall hotel, then
along the route to the Wrekin
and up the entire footpath of
the Wrekin up to the summit.
They even provided
a little 4x4 vehicle to help
those who were struggling
to get to the top. Although
the original plan was to have
a chain around the Wrekin,
that had to be abandoned
for logistical reasons, and
was then replaced by some
other ideas for fun attempts
to break a World Record,
including the Hokey-Kokey,
Most Paper Hats and Cracker
Pulling!
But although over 2,000
participants were expected,
only around 500 actually
made it, so the Guinness
World Record that was attempted
on the day was the
most number of simultaneous
Selfies, which was done
as a chain of people on both
sides of the last leg of the
path at the Wrekin Summit.
Let’s hope that everyone
who came, enjoyed the day,
and the event can be bigger
and better for 2015.
