Self-evaluation - Technische Universiteit Eindhoven

Self-evaluation research programme ESoE activities or formally organized schooling, as a result of innovation processes and via informal learning experiences (Hoekstra, 2007 14 ). In ESoE research, it is expected that design and method follow the leading research questions. Consequently, both qualitative and quantitative research as well as various research methods - such as design-based research, longitudinal research, and case study research - are all valued. ESoE collaborates with other units within the TU/e as well as with other national and international universities in research projects, for example in interrelated research projects funded by NWO (Leiden University, Utrecht University), but also in the supervision of both internal PhD students (together with Utrecht University, the Radboud University of Nijmegen, Tilburg University or the Open University in Heerlen) or external PhD students (Groningen University, Open University, Leiden University). The supervision of PhD students is also carried out in cooperation with universities of applied science, such as Fontys Hogescholen, Hogeschool Zuyd, Hogeschool De Kempel. Contract research, which is not part of the current evaluation, is conducted with even more different partners, such as the secondary education schools from Ons Middelbaar Onderwijs (OMO), the national educational service centers that fund short-term educational research (Kortlopend Onderwijs Onderzoek, KLOO), the vocational education institute ROC Eindhoven (Summacollege) or governmental organisations (e.g. Kennisnet, SURF). ESoE staff and PhD students disseminate their work at scientific and professional conferences, during lectures or presentations or in workshops with teachers. Also, they publish their work in scientific and professional journals. Instruments and procedures as products of research are made available to teachers and schools, are used in professional development activities or in the teacher education programme. Leadership and organisation: Programme leaders during the review period: 2007 – 2010: Professor dr. Wim Jochems, Professor dr. Koeno Gravemeijer 2011 – present: Professor dr. Self-evaluation research programme ESoE Figure 1: Organisation chart of ESoE (as of December 2012). Head of ESoE is the dean (professor dr. D. Beijaard), who is responsible for all ESoE staff and activities. The dean is advised and guided by a governing board, consisting of the Rector Magnificus of Eindhoven University of Technology (prof. dr. ir. C.J. van Duijn), the dean of the department under which ESoE resides (currently the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, prof. dr. A. Cohen 15 ), one other TU/e professor from one of the four school subject domains in which ESoE trains teachers (currently the educational director of the Department of Applied Physics, prof. dr. K. van Leeuwen) and two representatives from secondary education institutes. Currently, these representatives are the chair of the board of OMO (Ons Middelbaar Onderwijs), the largest group of secondary education schools in the South of the Netherlands (drs. E. Bernard) and one principal of a secondary education school (drs. G. Heijmans). The daily administration of ESoE is coordinated by a management team, consisting of the dean (prof. dr. D. Beijaard), the financial director (drs. C. Cantrijn) and the directors of education (dr. R. Taconis) and research (prof. dr. P. den Brok). The research programme and research staff are coordinated by the research director. The research director organizes four meetings per year with the senior research staff of ESoE to discuss PhD supervision and PhD output, research grant applications and research policy. Furthermore, monthly meetings are organized in which staff and PhD students discuss their research together and/or receive researchers from other universities or countries (‘ESoE colloquia’). In addition, the PhD 15 Recently prof. dr. E.H.L. Aarts became dean of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science. He will probably take over membership of prof. dr. A. Cohen in the governing board. 8
