your article might look a little strange: A tour between the alligators with Tod!” We paddle a few
miles through the narrow mangrove tunnel and through smaller lakes. After the hustle and bustle
of the big city, the incredible calmness of the swamps surrounds us. Following the majestic sunset,
while Tod hands out slices of honeydew melon, we are given headlamps. Only then do we notice
the many brightly shining eyes and realise how many alligators are surrounding us. Tod supplies
us with indispensable mosquito spray, and tells us a lot about the area. Bravely and respectfully we
approach several alligators. Most of them quickly submerge as we get closer. Just one impressively
large male specimen follows us curiously. We prefer to keep a safe distance. After this adventure we
spend a few days travelling to the deep South of the USA, to Key West. Caribbean flair, picturesque
Victorian-style villas, turquoise coloured water, the former home of Ernest Hemingway, a snorkelling
tour by catamaran to the third biggest reef in the world – I have arrived in paradise.

Dahlke, der uns auf eine Kanutour durch die Everglades mitnimmt. Er scherzt: „Du kannst mich
gern mit zwei D schreiben. Ich weiß, was mein Name auf Deutsch bedeutet. Sieht sonst komisch
aus: Mit Tod auf Tour zwischen Alligatoren.“ Wir paddeln ein paar Kilometer durch die engen Mangroventunnel
und über kleinere Seen. Wohltuend nach dem Großstadttrubel umfängt uns die
unglaubliche Ruhe der Sümpfe. Nach dem majestätischen Sonnenuntergang, den uns Tod mit
Honigmelone versüßt, bekommen wir Stirnlampen. Erst jetzt sehen wir aufgrund der leuchtenden
Augen, wie viele Alligatoren uns umzingeln. Tod versorgt uns mit unverzichtbarem Mückenspray,
und wir lernen von ihm eine Menge über die Gegend. Mutig und respektvoll nähern wir uns einigen
Alligatoren. Die meisten tauchen rasch unter, wenn wir herankommen. Nur ein imposantes Männchen
verfolgt uns neugierig. Wir gehen lieber auf Abstand. Nach diesem Abenteuer fahren wir noch
ein paar Tage in den tiefsten Süden der USA, nach Key West. Karibisches Flair, pittoreske Villen im
viktorianischen Stil, türkisfarbene Traumstrände, das Wohnhaus von Ernest Hemingway, eine
Schnorcheltour im Katamaran zum drittgrößten Riff der Welt – ich bin im Paradies angekommen.
