(NTRCI) has contracted with the UAB UTC for an exciting new study examining the relationships between age, medication use, medical conditions, sleep, cognition, distraction, and driving performance among commercial truck drivers. Under the direction of Dr. Russ Fine, Dr. Despina Stavrinos and Dr. Karen Heaton, the project, Impact of Distraction and Health on Commercial Driving Performance will compare the effects of visual and cognitive distraction on driving performance of commercial drivers under different distraction conditions using a state of the art driving simulator. Mr. Jason Bagley, head of Boyd Brothers Safety and Training Operations, uses the state-of-the-art driving simulator. Currently licensed commercial truck drivers will participate in the study that will include a 100- mile simulated trip. The trip will require the drivers to engage in a variety of common, yet potentially distracting activities. The simulator is a state-ofthe-art, L3 Communications / MPRI Truck Simulator that is loaded with Trucking Standard Software. In addition to the simulated trip, a number of additional health-related measures will be collected from the participating drivers and analyzed to answer a series of interesting and important research questions being asked by the UAB UTC scientists. Eventual research results hold great promise for making a major impact on transportation research, legislation and most importantly driver/ roadway safety. Overall, UAB UTC research scientists are hopeful that findings from this study may lead to use of interventions that will help commercial drivers improve their driving performance. It may also be that findings from this study will contribute, in a meaningful way, to the development of an intervention that will help decrease the incidence of commercial vehicle crashes resulting from distracted driving and / or other health-related factors. The UAB UTC is indebted to Boyd Brothers Transportation Company, and particularly Mr. Chris Cooper, COO, Mr. Wade Gunter, Operations Manager for Boyd Brothers, and Mr. Jason Bagley, head of their impressive Safety and Training operations, for making this study possible. Without their support, cooperation and generous donation of simulator time, this study would not be possible.
