LEADERSHIP
IN
ACADEMICS
UCC’s LPN students celebrate
their graduation and
97.2% passage rate on the
licensure exam.
FOR THE FOURTH YEAR IN
A ROW, CREDIT AND NON-CREDIT
ENROLLMENTS SURPASSED THE
ALL-TIME RECORD HIGH OF THE
PREVIOUS YEAR AS THE COLLEGE
SERVED THE EDUCATIONAL NEEDS
OF 34,550 STUDENTS.
(for a more complete breakdown see p. 21)
THE FRESHMAN
SEMINAR – UCC 101
The MSCHE Team was particularly impressed by
one of the newer additions to the menu of tools
which UCC provides in order to support student
success. Last year’s annual report noted that participation
in the Freshman Seminar (known as UCC 101), though an
optional course at the time, “had grown by leaps and bounds.” This
year, for the first time, all first-time full-time students and part-time
students taking twelve or more credits were required to pass UCC
101 in order to progress in their programs. UCC 101 is designed to
help students adjust to college by giving them the information, support,
and strategies they need to feel secure in their college classes.
It is aimed at helping students clarify their goals, become familiar
with the academic environment and sharpen their abilities to learn
and think critically. It will also help students develop study skills
and make better use of time and resources while at UCC or any college
and begin to think about long-term educational goals at UCC
and beyond. Early indications are that the course is accomplishing
its objectives and increasing student performance and persistence.
“New & Improved”
Library REOPENS IN CRANFORD
Originally built in 1973, the MacKay Library on the Cranford campus
remained virtually unchanged for 30 years. After a 3-year renovation
and construction project, in fall 2006, the ribbon was cut in
formal rededication of the state-of-the art library. The improvements
also provided additional classroom space along with increased dedicated
space for the College’s award-winning Academic Learning
Center which provides one-onone
tutoring in all subjects to
UCC students.
During the year, Library
Instruction increased more than
23% over the prior year. Taking
into account libraries on the
Cranford, Elizabeth, and
Plainfield campuses, a total of
416 library instruction classes
were held which reached 8.786
students
UCC’s LICENSED
PRACTICAL NURSING
(LPN) Program cited
for quality.
In addition to its 2006 graduates achieving a 97.2% passage rate on
the NCLEX-PN licensing examination, The College’s LPN program
achieved two other significant milestones during this academic year.
Not only did it receive academic recognition through the MSCHE
process, this year the LPN program also received an 8-year accreditation
from the New Jersey Board of Nursing and was notified that
the national League for Nursing Accrediting commission (NLNAC)
granted the program accreditation through the fall of 2011. This is
the first time in the history of the college that the LPN program has
been accredited by the National Nursing League. In its letter of notification
to the College, the NLNAC Board of Commissioners stated,
