ABOUT THE RESPIRATORY<br />

CURRICULM<br />

The University <strong>of</strong>fers the A.A.S. <strong>Degree</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Respiratory</strong><br />

Therapy. The curriculum reflects high standards <strong>of</strong><br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essional practice and <strong>in</strong>corporates guidel<strong>in</strong>es from<br />

practice trends, pr<strong>of</strong>essional organizations and<br />

accredit<strong>in</strong>g agencies. Students develop the knowledge<br />

base and cl<strong>in</strong>ical competencies required to meet the<br />

health care needs <strong>of</strong> patients with cardiopulmonary<br />

disorders. <strong>Respiratory</strong> Therapists treat patients along the<br />

age and health-care cont<strong>in</strong>uums – from premature<br />

<strong>in</strong>fants to the aged <strong>in</strong> critical care, acute care,<br />

rehabilitation, and home care sett<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />

ACCREDITATION & CREDENTIALING<br />

The UDC <strong>Respiratory</strong> Therapy Program is<br />

accredited by the Commission on Accreditation<br />

<strong>of</strong> Allied Health Education Programs<br />

(CAAHEP), <strong>in</strong> collaboration with the Committee<br />

on Accreditation for <strong>Respiratory</strong> Care (CoARC).<br />

Graduates are eligible for both the entry-level<br />

licensure/CRT exam<strong>in</strong>ation) required by the<br />

District <strong>of</strong> Columbia, Maryland, and Virg<strong>in</strong>ia)<br />

and the advanced practice RRT exam<strong>in</strong>ations,<br />

both <strong>of</strong>fered by the National Board for<br />

<strong>Respiratory</strong> Care (NBRC).<br />

ACADEMIC INFORMATION ADMISSION( Cont.)<br />

A separate application however is required to enroll<br />

<strong>in</strong> the Pr<strong>of</strong>essional/Cl<strong>in</strong>ical Division (P/CD) <strong>of</strong> the<br />

program. Admission to the P/CD is competitive. To<br />

be considered for admission to the P/CD, eligible<br />

students must be enrolled at the University;<br />

complete prerequisites <strong>of</strong> 14 semester hours earn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

a m<strong>in</strong>imum grade <strong>of</strong> “C” <strong>in</strong> each identified course,<br />

and have a cumulative grade po<strong>in</strong>t average (CGPA)<br />

<strong>of</strong> 2.5 or higher. Transfer students must also<br />

demonstrate a 2.5 GPA, and have their <strong>of</strong>ficial<br />

transcript (s) evaluated by the University. The<br />

program <strong>of</strong> study lists the prerequisite course.<br />

Prerequisite science courses can not be older than<br />

seven (7) years. The application for admission to the<br />

P/CD is available <strong>in</strong> January <strong>of</strong> each year and must<br />

be returned by March 30 for the Fall semester.<br />

Application submission does not guarantee<br />

admission to the P/CD.<br />
