Sciences<br />

The numbered sections refer to <strong>the</strong> corresponding sections in <strong>the</strong> Regul<strong>at</strong>ions <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>degree</strong> <strong>of</strong> Philosophiae Doctor (<strong>PhD</strong>) <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Agder.<br />

To § 5 Admission<br />

To § 5.1 Conditions <strong>for</strong> admission<br />

Applicants <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>PhD</strong> programme must hold a higher <strong>degree</strong> (Master’s <strong>degree</strong> or equivalent<br />

qualific<strong>at</strong>ions) in a relevant subject area from a Norwegian or <strong>for</strong>eign university or college.<br />

The <strong>degree</strong> must normally comprise a minimum <strong>of</strong> 90 ECTS credits in <strong>the</strong> relevant subject<br />

area <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> specialis<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>the</strong> <strong>PhD</strong> candid<strong>at</strong>e is admitted to. Within <strong>the</strong> specialis<strong>at</strong>ions <strong>of</strong><br />

In<strong>for</strong>m<strong>at</strong>ion Systems and Public Administr<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>the</strong>re is an additional requirement <strong>of</strong> <strong>at</strong> least<br />

30 <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se ECTS credits being from <strong>the</strong> 4 th and 5 th year <strong>of</strong> study. All applicants are required<br />

to document sufficient previous knowledge in social-scientific methodology.<br />

O<strong>the</strong>r educ<strong>at</strong>ional background or prior learning and work experience considered by <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Faculty</strong> to be equal to <strong>the</strong> above requirements with respect to scope, level and content may<br />

also qualify <strong>for</strong> admission.<br />

If <strong>the</strong> <strong>Faculty</strong> is <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> opinion th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> applicant lacks <strong>the</strong> required knowledge within <strong>the</strong><br />

relevant subject area or within social-scientific methodology, applicants may be required to<br />

take additional exams <strong>at</strong> a lower level, or will be given a reading list and be tested by writing<br />

a paper th<strong>at</strong> must be approved, or by taking an oral exam. In <strong>the</strong> event <strong>of</strong> insufficient previous<br />

knowledge <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> admission, <strong>the</strong> required previous knowledge shall normally be tested<br />

and approved in <strong>the</strong> course <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> first six months after admission. Required additional exams,<br />

if any, do not involve any extension <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> agreed time frame.<br />

Generally, an applicant should not be considered <strong>for</strong> admission to <strong>the</strong> <strong>PhD</strong> programme if<br />

he/she has an average mark <strong>for</strong> modules in <strong>the</strong> relevant subject area <strong>of</strong> specialis<strong>at</strong>ion lower<br />

than B, a mark <strong>for</strong> gradu<strong>at</strong>e modules lower than B, or a mark <strong>for</strong> his/her Master’s <strong>degree</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>sis or equivalent lower than B.<br />

In individual cases, <strong>the</strong> applic<strong>at</strong>ion may still be considered if <strong>the</strong> <strong>PhD</strong> committee finds <strong>the</strong><br />

document<strong>at</strong>ion presented to indic<strong>at</strong>e th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> applicant will be able to successfully complete


<strong>the</strong> <strong>PhD</strong> programme.<br />

The project description should normally not exceed 10 pages.<br />

The <strong>PhD</strong> committee may decide to interview <strong>the</strong> applicants.<br />

The <strong>PhD</strong> candid<strong>at</strong>e is expected to be present <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Agder during <strong>the</strong> course <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> programme unless o<strong>the</strong>rwise agreed. Details <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> residency requirement shall be<br />

provided in <strong>the</strong> agreement, and it is <strong>the</strong> responsibility <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> supervisors to ensure compliance<br />

with this requirement.<br />

To § 8 Organized academic training<br />

The training component is specific to <strong>the</strong> specializ<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>the</strong> <strong>PhD</strong> candid<strong>at</strong>e is admitted to.<br />

Details on <strong>the</strong> training component are found in <strong>the</strong> curriculum and course descriptions.<br />

For examin<strong>at</strong>ion or assessment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> training component a pass or fail is awarded. A pass<br />

indic<strong>at</strong>es a high academic level, equivalent to a grade B.<br />

Each candid<strong>at</strong>e’s individual training component is subject to approval by <strong>the</strong> <strong>PhD</strong> committee.<br />

On <strong>the</strong> basis <strong>of</strong> an applic<strong>at</strong>ion, <strong>the</strong> <strong>PhD</strong> committee may allow a candid<strong>at</strong>e to replace single<br />

courses <strong>of</strong>fered by <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Agder by relevant courses from o<strong>the</strong>r institutions.<br />

To § 13.1 Submission <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> dissert<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

The <strong>PhD</strong> candid<strong>at</strong>e must submit an applic<strong>at</strong>ion to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Faculty</strong> to have his/her dissert<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

evalu<strong>at</strong>ed. The applic<strong>at</strong>ion should be accompanied by 5 copies <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> dissert<strong>at</strong>ion. If <strong>the</strong><br />

dissert<strong>at</strong>ion is found to be worthy <strong>of</strong> defence, ano<strong>the</strong>r 30 copies <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> dissert<strong>at</strong>ion must be<br />

submitted.<br />

To §14 Appointment <strong>of</strong> evalu<strong>at</strong>ion committee<br />

The <strong>Faculty</strong> shall appoint an evalu<strong>at</strong>ion committee, including opponents, on <strong>the</strong> basis <strong>of</strong><br />

proposals from <strong>the</strong> <strong>PhD</strong> committee.
