Dinner Awards Ceremony was an
overwhelming success with more than
400 guests, including World Champions,
National Authorities, celebrities
and VIPs coming together for the
highlight of the powerboat year.
Following a press conference attended
by main international media representatives,
the glittering event itself saw
the presentation of the UIM Environmental
Award to Sanlorenzo, SL94 and
the celebration of Special Mentions for
Powerboat P1 Management Ltd, VSY
Viareggio Superyachts and Volvo Penta.
During the 2012 racing season, the
UIM organised more than 120 International
titled events, featuring more than
900 racers. On the night, over 70 UIM

World Champions from more than 25 different federations
stepped up to receive their well-deserved honours. This year
the Stefano Casiraghi Memorial Trophy – presented in recognition
of the 1989 Class1 World Offshore Champion - was
given to Charles D. Strang from the USA. Strang is known
worldwide as one of the main personalities in powerboating
and served the UIM for over 50 years. The new Safety Award
was made to the Dubai Government for its continuous efforts
in developing and improving safety in powerboating. The
gala ceremony in Monaco – home of the UIM since 1986 – is
one of the key dates on the calendar for powerboat racers as
reaching the Monte Carlo stage is a result of world championship
success. UIM President Raffaele Chiulli said: “It was
a fantastic event and gave us the opportunity to liaise with
our main stakeholders and the nautical industry. This event
was the perfect conclusion to an extremely positive racing
season. We look forward to a successful 2013 with several
new countries, venues, events and ambitious targets for our
sport”.

Award was launched in order to
inspire and recognise excellence in
innovation, development and application
of environmentally friendly
technologies. It is open to UIM National
Authorities, partners, racing
teams, boat builders, engine manufacturers,
universities, research centres,
scientists, Non Governmental
Organisations (NGOs), companies in
order to recognise outstanding environmental
leaders, whether individuals
or organisations, that have
exemplified inspiration, vision, innovation,
leadership and applications
for the environment. Among the
main selection criteria are Innovation,
Significance, Practicality, Usability,
Economic Feasibility and
Environmental Benefit. For 2012, the

For the first
time in the
history of the
sport, South
America will
host the F1
H2O World
Championship
when the 2013 campaign gets under
way with the Grand Prix of Brazil in the
capital city of Brasilia from June 1-2.
"It's a dream come true for me," said
H2O Racing President Nicolo di San
Germano. "I’m very grateful to Governor

Brasilia on the UIM F1 racing map.
The Grand Prix racing weekend is
expected to attract more than 100,000
spectators during a very busy schedule
for the area. The UIM F1 H2O Grand Prix
will mark the beginning of a series of
exciting events with the arrival just one
week later of the start of the Confederation
Cup 2013. For a city of 2.6 million
people founded just 53 years ago,
Brasilia is a dynamic and rapidly growing
metropolis. Brazil is proud of a series
of events are planned in the near
future, including the Youth World Meeting
with the Pope in Rio de Janeiro, the
2014 FIFA World Cup and the Summer
Olympics of 2016. As the F1 series
begins its 30th anniversary of racing
along while closing in on its historic
250th Grand Prix event, it seems fitting
that a new page is written in the history
of the sport bringing the dynamic backdrop
of Brasilia to the one of the world’s
most exciting water sports.

Shane triumphs in 2013 UIM H1 World Championship
It was a case of déjà vu in slightly easier
circumstances for Jimmy Shane
and his U-5 Graham Trucking team,
who snatched a straightforward victory
in the 2013 UIM H1 World Championship
final in Doha Bay, Qatar
No driver had ever won the H1 Oryx
Cup twice and Shane duly re-wrote the
history books with his second win in
the space of a month. The champion
cruised to a comfortable triumph once
main rival Steve David was penalised a
lap before the start for making a premature
move on his rival during the
pre-race warm-up lap. “I couldn’t ask
for anything more,” said Shane, who
didn’t have a full-time H1 ride until 18
months ago. “I will be a father for the
first time in three and a half months
and to win here in Qatar twice in less
than two months is a superb start to
the year for me.” The race proved to be
an anti-climax after three thrilling days
of racing in Qatar, with Jon Zimmerman
holding on to take second place –
after finishing third in January - and
David lapping both Mark Evans and
Ryan Mallow to confirm third, despite
running a penalty lap. In the previous
four Oryx Cup UIM World Championship
races there had never been a double
winner. J. Michael Kelly won the
inaugural race in 2009, Dave Villwock
was triumphant in 2010 for the Spirit
of Qatar Team and Scott Liddycoat and
Jimmy Shane won in 2011 and 2012.
Tom Thompson, who had been injured
in a spectacular crash involving U-11
Miss Peters & May and U-21 Snoqualmie
Casino on the Saturday afternoon
was released from hospital in time to
watch the action unfold. The Oryx Cup
UIM World Championship was organised
by the Qatar Marine Sports Federation
(QMSF), which runs under the
presidency of His Excellency Sheikh
Hassan bin Jabor Al-Thani, in conjunction
with H1 Unlimited. On the final
podium, H1 chairman Sam Cole also
signed a five-year deal with Sheikh
Hassan to continue to run the Oryx
Cup in Doha until 2018.

UIM, RYA Strengthen Links
UIM President Dr Raffaele Chiulli
attended the official Royal Yachting
Association Lunch, held alongside the
London Boat Show, to further strengthen
ties between the two bodies. Her
Royal Highness Princess Anne, the
Princess Royal, as well as representatives
of the British Government and
several British Sailing Team Olympic
gold medallists attended the lunch. At
the end of the official lunch, Dr Chiulli
said: “I would like to congratulate
HRH the Princess Royal and the
British authorities for the excellent
job done in the occasion of the Olympic
Games which were recently held in
London. “The London Olympic Games
were a symbol of peace, trust and
unity, bringing the world and the
local communities together into one
big family. Sport fosters team
building, trust, honesty and the
chance to help each other achieve the
best results. Great sporting achievements
will certainly inspire younger
generations”
Fazza Off To An XCAT Flyer
The Fazza combination of Arif Al Zaffain and Mohammad
Al Marri looks unstoppable following two outright wins in
as many rounds in the 2013 UIM XCAT World Series.
Al Zaffain and Al Marri opened the new season with an
emphatic victory and maximum points in the seasonopener
held in Abu Dhabi and then repeated their performance
in the second round held at the Dubai International
Marine Club (DIMC).
“It looks like Fazza have a good all-round set up and as
usual they have found their winning touch from the start of
the season,” said WPPA Vice President Dr Khalid Zahed. “But
we have another five rounds to go and anything is possible.
I think it is way too early and I believe the race for the
overall title is still wide open.”
Now in its third consecutive year, the XCAT World Series
has made several new additions to the way the highlypopular
race series is run and operated.
For a start, the UIM has given its sanction to the WPPA to
act as promoter and organiser of XCAT races all over the
world. This follows a strategic agreement signed in
December last year enabling the WPPA to function as an
entity on behalf of the world governing body.
Yet another addition is the Speed Cat Run – more like a
sprint to the finish between boats - held prior to the main
event over each race weekend. Fazza has won both the
Speed Cat Runs held in Abu Dhabi and Dubai to lie at the
top of the standings with a maximum 20 points followed
by Victory Team in second with 14 points and Qatar Team
and Spirit of Dubai in joint third with ten points each.
As organiser and promoter, the WPPA has also decided to
stick to a maximum of 14 boats during a calendar year.
These teams will be contracted to the WPPA for the season
with the right to have a share of the total prize money depending
on how each one finishes in the overall standings.
“And of course, we will be as transparent as possible
during the course of the season by having regular
meetings with team owners at each and every venue,”
added Dr Zahed.
