Maximum Impact in a Minimalist World<br />

Daniel Shepherd has a story to tell and<br />
path to take you there. This self-taught<br />
artist has a captivating body for work.<br />
Daniel creates collage work, abstract<br />
painting and minimalist blocks of color.<br />
He began drawing as a child. “The<br />
first time I can remember holding a<br />
pencil in my hand, I was sitting on my<br />
great grandmother’s lap, drawing together. We’d play a game called<br />
‘Squiggles’ where one of us would draw a random shape, and it would<br />
be the other one’s job to make something out of it.” He followed other<br />
paths but the lessons learned as a child stayed with him. “Those days<br />
taught me how to think fast about getting an idea down quickly. It’s<br />
how I work today. I don’t like to plan ahead, I just go. Knowing when to<br />
stop is the hard part.”<br />
Daniel is based in Phoenix. “I found this area to be suited to my<br />
creativity. I love the solitude, the connection to nature and the support<br />
of community. My work is organic, I like to, I want to, I have to create<br />
in that way. By organic I mean I allow the material to guide me. You<br />
cannot force creativity. I’m told that when I’m not being creative for<br />
a period of time, I’m a nasty, rotten, horrible, grumpy person to be<br />
around. Sadly, it’s true,” chuckles Daniel.<br />
Daniel’s latest work “the colour box” is at Design 849, Palm Springs.<br />
The show features a series of minimal acrylic abstractions on wood<br />
panels. Meditative, moody, mesmerizing – Daniel describes the<br />
work as “Ambient Painting.” He defines the technique as painting<br />
with bright, saturated colors that collide with pastels or minimal<br />
abstractions to create a more expansive plaintive serenity. His intent is<br />
clear – to move people. . “Everyone has an idea what is art. I am only<br />
concerned that people look at my art and feel something. ‘Liking it’ or<br />
‘getting it’ is not important.”<br />
“The concept of minimalist is hard to box in. It tends to draw you in but<br />
you are hard pressed to define it. ‘the colour box’ really opens up the<br />
concept. Visceral. The reaction needn’t be deeply intellectual. It just<br />
needs to be.”<br />
Daniel Shepherd’s minimalist style will surprise and mesmerize.<br />
“Perhaps not having rules in my head allows me to create with<br />
an innocence. The work is not naïve. Innocence should never be<br />
confused with naive.”<br />

Palm Springs’ famed Uptown Design District had an exciting evening filled<br />
with cocktails, music, shopping, drawings and fun. While strolling up and<br />
down this celebrated shopping district, one could discover interesting and<br />
unique decor, fashion, ART, food, and drink, as more than 35 locally owned<br />
businesses opened their doors for the extended hours. The ‘Lighting of<br />
the Torches‘ at the corner of W. Via Lola (former home of the famed “Don<br />
the Beachcomber”), was a lot of fun, and really exciting, complete with<br />
Hollywood lights high in the sky.<br />
VALLEY OF THE ARTS<br />
“Greeks & Italians” by Lon Michels MFA<br />
The newly designated Upper Uptown Art District has four first class galleries,<br />
all within 1 block of each other. The names of these galleries starting North<br />
to South are as follows: Woodman Shimko Gallery, Arch Angel Gallery, Lon<br />
Michels Gallery and Haya Gallery. All are unique and support local artists,<br />
and artists from around the world. In fact, Haya, who is owner of Haya<br />
Gallery is from Haifa, Israel. Haya carries an array of her art, which is infused<br />
with color and vibrancy. She also carries a whole line of Frank Lloyd Wright<br />
art and collectibles. All four of these art galleries will have joint openings<br />
this coming season, for you to enjoy a gallery walk on 2nd Fridays of each<br />
month. The amount of art to enjoy in such a short distance, is stunning and<br />
inspiring, not to mention beautiful, with so much diversity and integrity,<br />
that the Upper Uptown Arts District on North Palm Canyon, has become the<br />
premiere location in the desert, to be seen and see all that the area offers.<br />
Come and experience why this is the NEW, HOT art district of the “Valley Of<br />
The Arts”.<br />
Just one example of a person seeking out this incredible area for the arts,<br />
with a sale of a painting, is the curator of the Victoria Albert Art Museum<br />
in London, England. One of Lon Michels MFA paintings titled “Greeks &<br />
Italians”, was sold to this collector.It is only fitting that this painting should<br />
go back to Europe, since that is where Lon painted this beautiful painting, in<br />
Athens Greece plein air. Lon gives so much, and it is said that by giving we<br />
receive. Lon’s latest gig was in the form of the key note address speaker for<br />
Combat Blindness International, in Madison WI. His speech was amazing and<br />
truly inspiring. Through Lon’s art, and lecture, with news feeds and powerpoint<br />
of his work dating back to age 7. He was able to help 18,000 people<br />
receive the gift of sight. Just imagine a grandparent seeing their grandchild<br />
for the 1st time, or a child seeing their parents for the 1st time. Lon was so<br />
grateful to share his experience strength and hope. Now we are able to bring<br />
help to those in need right here in our own Cochella Valley, with the Desert<br />
Blind and Handicapped Association www.desertblind.org . Please help if<br />
you are able, DBHA gives rides and transportation to over 400 blind and<br />
handicapped persons per month.<br />
In two short weeks the Desert Sun will hosting the Tramway Challenge<br />
www.makeadifferenceday.mydesert.com come join Lon and myself for this<br />
incredible fundraiser for the United Way. Lon has been<br />
training since January, running 5 miles every morning.<br />
I have been training my eyes to watch him run every<br />
morning! We hope to see our desert friends there<br />
for breakfast and participation in the run.<br />

wait, artists just seem to have to wait a little<br />

THE 22ND ANNUAL NIGHTMARE ON NORMAL<br />
STREET <strong>2014</strong>:<br />
Normal Street will be transformed into a fun and exciting<br />
party for all ages, this year will feature an all ages fright<br />
zone and soda bar and a 21+ zone under the colors<br />
of the PRIDE Flag, The street will be filled with people<br />
showing off their costumes while enjoying the evening<br />
of entertainment, food, music, soda, and cocktails as<br />
they dance in the streets.<br />
This Fang-tastic celebration will take place on Normal<br />
Street between University Avenue and Harvey Milk<br />
Street October 25th, <strong>2014</strong> from 6:00 pm - 11:00 pm<br />
Tickets are on sale now $10.00 for general admission<br />
and VIP tickets can be purchased also at $50.00 which<br />
includes all you can drink plus complimentary food.<br />
Proceeds from the evening will go towards the San Diego<br />
LGBT Community Center and the Hillcrest Business<br />
Association. So get your sewing machines out and get<br />

KEEP THEIR WHEELS ROLLING<br />
FUNDRAISER:<br />
The Stonewall Citizens' patrol is a volunteer neighborhood<br />
crime patrol group operating in the diverse<br />
Hillcrest, North Park and University Heights areas of<br />
San Diego. With over 30 volunteers armed with training<br />
from the San Diego Police Department, They patrol the<br />
streets in these three areas being extra eyes and ears.<br />
in addition to patrolling, the organization focuses on<br />
crime awareness and crime prevention which includes<br />
distributing safety whistles,crime prevention posters and<br />
safety tip cards.<br />
The organization was founded October 2006 and on October<br />
13th <strong>2014</strong>, the organisation celebrated 8 Years of<br />
service to our community. Harvey Milk's American Diner<br />
was the host of this of this fundraising event. Thank you<br />
to all the wonderful volunteers of this organization who<br />
patrol our streets to keep us safe. An award ceremony<br />
recognizing Nicole Murray-Ramirez, Bob Lehman, Tom<br />
Felkner, Dr. Delores Jacobs, Chris Shaw, Stephen Whitbum,<br />
Aaron Heier, and Nick Moede was also held. Big<br />
Kudos to all 7 listed here who revived this honor. But<br />
most of all, thank you all who attended this event to keep<br />

LOOKING AROUND US :<br />
Bankers Hill........<br />
Most of you know of our fun Village of Hillcrest.<br />
However if you look around there are wonderful<br />
surrounding communities with historic charm. In<br />
this issue I will introduce you to Bankers Hill and in<br />
following issues take you on a tour of other neighborhoods<br />
that will make you want to just take a Sunday<br />
stroll.<br />
So come with me and see just a little of what Bankers<br />
Hill is all about. This area was developed in the<br />
1890’s. Most of the streets running East and West<br />
are all named after trees. As I strolled along I came<br />
across this wonderful looking bridge named ‘The<br />
Quince Street Bridge’ which was built in 1905. This<br />
trestle bridge connected the Bankers Hill neighborhood<br />
to the streetcar that ran along Fourth Avenue<br />
and began its route in 1892. As I continued my stroll<br />
I saw another bridge, the ‘Spruce Street Suspension<br />
Bridge’, built 7 years after the Quince Bridge in<br />
1912, also connecting residents to the Streetcar. As<br />
I strolled along farther on my tour of Bankers Hill, I<br />
found that it was not only a beautiful walk but it also<br />
had a dozen historic sites that showed the residential<br />
architecture in San Diego in the first quarter of the<br />
1900's.<br />
San Francisco has Nob Hill. Los Angeles has<br />
Beverly Hills. San Diego has Bankers Hill (named<br />
for its first residents). After the crash of 1929, there<br />
weren't many Bicoastal tycoons left and the wealthy<br />
financiers who originally flocked to Bankers Hill sold<br />
their property. Today we can still see some of these<br />
beautiful homes of a past era. As I walked up Redwood<br />
there it was at 202 Redwood- a classic Revival<br />
mansion with a south facing front and splendid ionic<br />
columns. There are so many more homes to view.<br />
I hope this sparks a willingness in you to explore<br />
for yourself the beauty of Bankers Hill, San Diego,<br />
California.<br />

Fremont Street Experience will once again transform itself for the Sixth<br />
Annual OktoberFrightFest, combining Oktoberfest and Halloween for<br />
the ultimate street party, taking place October 5 – November 1. The<br />
spooktacular festivities will include free performances from the popular<br />
stage production show “Frank & The Steins,” “Vampire Rising” and<br />
“Halloween Hotties.” Viva Vision light and sound shows will also be themed<br />
to “Time Warp” and “Monster Mash.”<br />
Frank & The Steins:<br />
“Frank & The Steins” is a live musical revue of classic Halloween songs. The<br />
cast is comprised of hot ghouls and guys; singers, dancers and live musicians<br />
performing songs including “Psycho Killers,” “Spooky,” “Time Warp,” and<br />
“Ghostbusters” that will make audiences dance, laugh, sing and scream.<br />
“Frank & The Steins” is produced by Face Productions and choreographed by<br />
Melden Steele. Frank & The Steins will perform on the 1st Street Stage Oct.<br />
5 – Nov. 1 from 8 p.m. – 11 p.m. (dark on Oct. 9, 16 and 23).<br />
Vampire Rising:<br />
“Vampire Rising” will perform three themed sets that highlight a vast<br />
repertoire. The Gothic Set includes a set list on the heavy side of rock and<br />
will include songs from Rob Zombie’s “Dragula,” Alice in Chains’ “Man in the<br />
Box,” and Black Sabbath’s “Paranoid.” The Pop Horror set is hosted by the<br />
“Addams Family” and will feature some of the lighter side of the macabre<br />
with hits like Michael Jackson’s “Thriller,” and Oingo Boingo’s “Dead Man’s<br />
Party.” The third set, titled Rock From the Dead, will have the band costumed<br />
like some of our dearly departed rock stars and will regale the crowd with<br />
renditions that include Warren Zevon’s “Werewolves of London,” Guns<br />
& Roses’ “Welcome to the Jungle” and Blue Oyster Cult’s “Don’t Fear the<br />
Reaper.” Vampire Rising will perform on the 3rd Street Stage Oct. 7 – Oct. 30<br />
on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9 p.m. - Midnight and Thursdays, Fridays,<br />
Saturdays from 7 p.m. – 10 p.m. (dark on Oct. 18)<br />
Halloween Hotties<br />
The sexy, crowd pleasing, “Halloween Hotties” are back, this time featuring<br />
American Idol Season 6 Finalist Haley Scarnato. “Halloween Hotties” is<br />
a custom stage production show created exclusively for Fremont Street<br />
Experience by Face Productions. Halloween Hotties will perform on the Main<br />
Fifth Annual Fall Beer Festival (Golden Nugget):<br />
Fremont Street Experience member property Golden Nugget Hotel & Casino<br />
will host its Fifth Annual Fall Beer Festival during a two-day event on Oct. 10<br />
& 11. This two-day festival brings together consumers, craft beer vendors,<br />
live music, great food and hundreds of beers in two very different events.<br />
The first event kicks off Friday, Oct. 10 from 7-10 p.m. in The Grand Events<br />
Center. Guests will sample over 125 craft beer selections from awardwinning<br />
breweries and enjoy chef-inspired appetizers, live entertainment<br />
and mingle with award-winning brew masters. Tickets to this event can be<br />
purchased individually for $50 plus taxes at the Golden Nugget Box Office.<br />
The fun continues on Saturday, Oct. 11 with an exciting Oktoberfest Pool<br />
Party from 1-7 p.m. at The Tank Pool, Golden Nugget’s award-winning pool<br />
and shark aquarium. Admission is free and beer enthusiasts can enjoy<br />
150 different international and domestic beers available for purchase as<br />
well as bratwursts, pretzels and more great food while enjoying live music<br />
throughout the party<br />
Guests interested in both events can receive discounted food and beer<br />
tickets for Saturday’s Oktoberfest Pool Party with paid admission to Friday’s<br />
All American Craft Beer Tasting.<br />
Viva Vision Shows:<br />
Fremont Street Experience’s nightly Viva Vision schedule gets a little more<br />
spooktacular with two mini Halloween-themed themed sing-along/dancealong<br />
shows to “Time Warp” and “Monster Mash.” The shows are 3-4<br />
minutes long and will play after regularly scheduled Viva Vision shows.<br />

“So what’s this big surprise, Ramon?”<br />

RAINBOW TRAIL<br />
Fall <strong>2014</strong>, Lake Tahoe , CA. I’ve traveled to Tahoe<br />
to celebrate Ramon’s Birthday. We’ve decided to<br />
walk the Rainbow Trail at Taylor Creek.<br />
He’s promised a big surprise for me when we<br />
arrive at the Rainbow Trail.<br />
“Just follow me. We need to go to the information center at the trailhead.”<br />
“Ok, I say”, taking his elbow.<br />
We enter the information center. I hear some kids to my left, one of their<br />
parents at the cash register.<br />
“How can I help you”, a clerk asks Ramon.<br />
“I’d like access to the audio guide for the trail” he says.<br />
“You mean the recorder with the audio tape in it?” She asks.<br />
“Yes”, Ramon says, a tone of excitement in his voice.<br />
“I’ll be right back”, she says.<br />
“You mean there’s an audio tape describing this trail?” I ask Ramon.<br />
“Surprize!”<br />
“Wow, Ramon, how wonderful to think of this.”<br />
The clerk returns with the recorder. “Just press these two buttons and pause<br />
with the prompts”, she says.<br />
Ramon hands me the recorder along with the headphones.<br />
I take Ramon’s hand and we’re off on our special tour.<br />
“It’s a short half mile loop designed for interpreting the environmental balance<br />
of Lake Tahoe” Ramon explains.<br />
I say “the narrator is directing me to go to the observation deck, then hit<br />
pause.”<br />
“Ok, let’s go!”<br />
We arrive at the deck and the narrator describes the scenery before me.<br />
“Wow! This is Taylor Creek, where the salmon spawn!” I say.<br />
“Yes, you remembered that!”<br />
“You pointed it out while we were sailing this summer.”<br />
“We sailed past here the day you taught me how to anchor. We went<br />
swimming that afternoon, and I held onto the shrouds tightly, like a seasoned<br />
boat monkey, as we sliced through the wakes on our sail home.”<br />

PALM DESERT (September 29, <strong>2014</strong>) -The Galen New Year's Resolution 5K will be held<br />
December 27 from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., beginning and ending at Palm Springs Art Museum in<br />
Palm Desert, The Galen. The 5K is a certified course for runners, families, and enthusiasts of<br />
all ages to kick-off healthy New Year's resolutions.<br />
Following the run participants and the community are invited for a Resolution Celebration.<br />
This free post-event celebration includes museum admission, live entertainment, food and<br />
special activities in the beautiful Faye Sarkowsky Sculpture Garden at 10 a.m. In addition,<br />
awards will be given by age category and finishing medals provided to the first 1,000<br />
registrants.<br />
The USA Track and Field-certified course begins at the museum's parking area at Painters<br />
Path. The course, which is marked at each mile, proceeds up Edgehill Drive one mile past the<br />
Desert Baptist Church, and loops back down Edgehill, and turns left over the footbridge to<br />
Fred Waring Drive before turning to return to the start/finish line at the museum.<br />
The cost to participate is $35 for adults, $15 for children 6-18 years old, and children 5 and<br />

In-person registration takes place on December 13 and 14 at College of the Desert’s Street<br />
Fair from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., and also the day before the event on December 26 at the museum<br />
in Palm Desert from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.<br />
This event is produced by Klein/Clark Sports and benefits the Palm Springs Art Museum<br />
in Palm Desert, The Galen, to support ongoing education, free events, and community<br />
programs.<br />
Each participant in the 5K receives a long-sleeved commemorative shirt and dogs will receive<br />
a special bandana.<br />

the corner of Highway 111 and El Paseo at the intersection in the Entrada del Paseo center.<br />
