Scales
Scales & scientific levels for hydrologic research
Soil has a key role for many
environmental research studies
because of its multiple functions,
especially for soil water balance,
water quality, food production,
forestry, climate and conservation of
the ecosystem.
Scale 1: Soil physical laboratory
scale
characteristics with soil sample rings
and miniature lysimeters.
Retention curves
Sensor calibration
Bio remediation
Microcosm scale
Soils are different, heterogeneous
and highly complex. Therefore, it is
a challenge to extrapolate laboratory
results into the field, or punctiform
results into areas, or calibrating
models to expanded regions.
Scale 2: Hydrologic laboratory
scale
Determination of hydraulic
coherences with soil monoliths:
Flowability
Substance transport
Sorption and buffer behaviour
Research methodology and
instrumentation needs to be aligned
to the soil as well as to the objective
target. UMS offers know-how,
sensors and instrumentation for your
research tasks.
Scale 3: Lysimeter station
Field studies to describe in situ
retention curves and water fluxes or
as input data for groundwater recharge
models, leachate determination and
soil water sampling.
Scale 5: Modelling for process descriptions in catchment areas and
regions
Models for water and energy balance and substance transport as a tool for
status description, simulations or forecasts. Useful as a decision support tool
for cultivation and management of water resources. Models are calibrated with
precise measurements in the laboratory or in the field.
Beside sensors and scientific instrumentation we offer complete measuring solutions -
fitted to your individual tasks.
Laboratory solutions
This laboratory setup for soil retention
curves, flux determination, pore
water sampling, etc. consists of a
weighable small lysimeter KL2 with
which monolithic soil pillars can be
excavated.
A standard setup would have sensors
in different soil levels, like miniature
Tensiometers T5 for matrix potential
and FD-probes for volumetric
water content measurements,
temperature probes, miniature pore
water samplers, a high-resolution
scale and a ceramic bottom plate for
leachate sampling or for generating a
simulated tension.
Customized solutions
In 1988 UMS installed a tension
controlled scientific irrigation
system for plant specific soil water
conditioning. Date, time, duration of
irrigation and the matrix potential are
monitored on 64 channels.
This customized solution is operating
now for 18 years!
Extreme cases
In the field or in situ measuring sites
normally need individual design in
accordance to site and soil specific
situation and scientific tasks.
This system in Northern France
for example measures volumetric
water content, water tension and
temperature in a chalk soil down to
a depth of 10 meters. But the record
is still held by 20 meter Tensiometers
installed in the Oman desert.
Systems & Solutions
Field monitoring stations
Most of all outdoor stations need to
be resistant against environmental
influences, including lightning or
nibbling rodents. Yet, they should
still be user-friendly regarding the
installation as well as servicing, power
supply and data read-out.
To ensure this, UMS stations are well
designed, pre-assembled and pass a
one week test run before delivery.
GSM communication
A solar powered station with GSM
data transmission is the optimum in
service friendliness. At this station
located at the Zurich lake the status
is checked, data is downloaded
and configurations are changed
conveniently from the operator’s
office. But please consider a proper
anti-theft and vandalism protection.
Service friendly solutions
This combined soil and weather
monitoring station is equipped with
about 50 different sensors on a 10
meter mast. You think you need a
climber to service the sensors?
This UMS designed mast can simply
be tilted by removing a single bolt
for easy servicing and calibration
routines.
Let us know your requirements and ask for a quotation for a complete solution
All systems pass a test run and are pre-assembled as far as wished
Stations are supplied with handbook and documentation in English language
Tensiometer
Tensiometers for direct measurement of the soil water tension
All water movements in soils are
directly depending on the soil water
tension, as water - in soils as well as
on surface - will always move from
areas of higher potential to areas of
lower potential.
Main water movements occur at low
tensions which only Tensiometers
measure directly and precisely.
Naturally embedded soils are
heterogeneous. Thus, soil water
processes are not only affected by
precipitation and evapotranspiration,
but also by texture, grain size, cracks,
compactness, aggregation, roots and
cavities. Tensiometer measurements
are not directly influenced by the soil
heterogeneity.
T1 T3 T4 T5 T8 TS1
Shaft Sensor
How does it work?
Soil water and Tensiometer water
have contact through the porous
ceramic as a wetted porous ceramic
creates an ideal pore/water interface.
The soil water tension is directly
conducted to the pressure transducer
which offers a continuous signal. The
atmospheric reference pressure is
provided through a membrane on the
cable, a distinctive patented method.
HYST: 5hPa
With the new modular bus concept
tensioLINK it is possible to establish a
flexible and effective measuring site.
The modular concept allows an easy
extension or optimal adaption of the
system to many measuring tasks.
Benefits
Easy installation by networking
Digital data transfer over large
distances
New sensor functions e.g.
integrated data logger
Simple transmission protocol
allows integration of non-system
data acquisition devices
Supported devices
Interference safe transmission
The newest generation of products
from UMS are fitted to the serial
measuring bus tensioLINK.
tensioLINK is based on the RS485
standard. It is a 2-wire bus for data
transmission over several joints
over large distances. The differential
transmission eliminates interferences
to assure safe communication over
large distances.
Modular concept for easy handling and flexible extensibility
Easy data download also with nonsystem
data acquisition devices
To make sensors compatible to nonsystem
data acquisition devices
the tensioLINK protocol can be
programmed with simple ASCII
instructions. Thus, e. g. data loggers
with a RS485 sensor interface can
connect to and read out numerous
sensors without the need of
expensive analogue inputs.
Flexibility by networking
To implement new functions into
sensors or devices and still be
flexible in cabling an analogue cable
transmission is not sufficient any
more. A serial interface is required for
digital communication with sensors.
+538hPa
Soll: 540hPa
tensioLINK
Maximum compatibility
To guarantee the maximum
compatibility of our products all
tensioLINK sensors and instruments
still have analogue outputs in addition.
Thus, they can be connected to any
standard measuring system which
requires analogue inputs.
New sensor functions
The serial interface offers new
possibilities like storage of readings
in the sensor itself (data logger),
calibration, configuration of controlling
functions etc. And of course the
accurate error free transfer of readings
without analogue cabling.
Tensiometer
The newest generation of UMS
sensors and instruments are fitted
with the tensioLINK bus (see above).
To connect them to a PC or Laptop a
USB adapter cable and the Windows
software tensioVIEW is available. The
software recognizes all instruments
connected to the bus.
tensioVIEW is used for sensor
configuration and data read-out. Edit
for example the set value and current
value of a VS vacuum station, further
parameters and the stored readings
of the connected Tensiometer.
For laboratory applications no
additional tools are required beside
tensioLINK and tensioVIEW:
the sensor readings are directly
downloaded to the computer.
tensioVIEW
The tensioLINK USB converter is
used for direct connection of sensors
and devices with serial tensioLINK
interface to a PC.
Benefits
Cost-effective laboratory application
with a PC used as a logger
Direct connection of tensioLINK
instruments like TS1, T8-2005, SIS,
If your task is soil water monitoring
you know the problem: water
vaporizes and is lost. If soil gets dryer
than about 85 kPa, no tensiometer is
able to take measurements. Still, as
only little water movements occur in
extreme dry soil, losing readings is
tolerable. Then, when the soil gets
wet again, the Tensiometer could
actually restart measurements - but
first it needs to be refilled again.
Now, the TS1 solves this problem:
In case the cup needs to be refilled
and soil water is available the internal
pump will draw up water out of the
soil, refill the cup and remove all
air through an exhaust outlet - fully
automatically.
Even if only a bubble is detected the
cup is deaerated automatically.
Contrariwise, if the temperature probe
indicates emerging frost, the TS1
empties itself to prevent damages
caused by freezing.
Applications
Field measurements of pF/wc
Ecological impact studies
Agricultural studies
Model calibration
Long time monitoring studies
Water balance and transport
studies
Benefits
Automatic self-refilling and
Continuous fill level controlling
Optional pore water sampling
Automatic emptying before frost
Integrated soil temperature probe
Auto logging function
tensioLINK and RS485 interface
Low maintenance
Limits
Not for permanent dry soils
Processor
As standard two analogue outputs
for pressure and temperature are
available. For extended
measuring tasks like large number
of Tensiometers the TS1 can be bus
linked.
The configuration of pumping
intervals, pumping volume,
installation angle etc. is done by PC
connection or with an INFIELD7b.
If no correct readings are available
an error message is registered. This
ensures the data integrity.
Pore water sampler
When used as an intelligent pore
water sampler the water drawn up
from the soil is not removed through
the exhaust but stored inside the
shaft. Regulated by the controller,
the water is extracted with a
pressure that is slightly higher than the
current soil water tension measured
by the TS1. Thus, soil disturbance, filtration
effects, lime accumulation or
pH-value shifts are prevented.
The intervals for automatic sampling
as well as the sample amount can be
set in the controller.
Current consumption for
measurements is less than 1 mA, for
pump operation less than 10 mA.
Smart Irrigation Sensor
Granular matrix sensor with linear
The SIS is a combination of the wellknown
Watermark(R) granular matrix
soil moisture sensor type 200SS
and a special amplifier which offers
a fully linearised and temperature
compensated DC-voltage output
signal.
The amplifier uses a new, patent
pending technique for the extremely
accurate measurement of the sensor
element.
The linear voltage signal reduces the
efforts for the electronic measuring
equipment and cable connections.
The temperature compensation
directly picks up the soil temperature.
Thus, the otherwise problematic
temperature difference between
logger and sensor is avoided.
programmable digital alarm signal
for irrigation issues and a serial
interface for bus linking and
Soil water sampling
Soil water sampling
UMS offers a wide range of pore
water samplers, leachate samplers
and vacuum devices. For straight
results it is decisive to select the
suitable material, the correct type
of sampler and the proper vacuum
method.
Should I use suction cups or suction
plates?
For extracting soil water for chemical
analysis pore water samplers with
cup are used (qualitative analysis).
Cups are easier to install than plates.
For determination of hydrologic
loading of water and substances
porous plates are suitable. Plates
are enclosed by a cylinder to prevent
that water will run around the plate
(vacuum too low) or that water from a
too large catchment span is extracted
(vacuum too large). On lysimeter
sites the cylinder reaches as far up as
the soil surface. In contrary, leachate
samplers are installed below the soil
water shed.
Leachate monitoring IRGO-Slovenia
For pore water samplers a bubble
point of 100 kPa (= 1000 hPa) is
standard. For leachate samplers a
bubble point of 10 kPa (= 100 hPa) is
sufficient.
Evacuation of sampling bottles with a portable vacuum pump
How many samplers in a system?
The number of suction cups connected
to one vacuum source is theoretically
not limited, as the vacuum once
applied will stay and only the volume
of water must compensated by
the volume of air from the vacuum
pump.
In practise, we recommend to connect
not more than about ten samplers to
one vacuum unit for two reasons:
1, If only one leak occurs (broken cup
or faulty connection) the complete
vacuum system stops working.
2, If at one point the soil is drier than
the cup‘s bubble point, the complete
system stops working.
3, It is much easier to handle small
systems.
Which porous material should be
used for which substances?
In the description of each sampler
on the following pages you will find
recommendations for the suitability.
Still, the chemical interactions of
soil water with the porous material,
the vacuum level and the method
of storage are complex. Therefore,
please contact us in case of doubt.
UMS developed a standard test
procedure in co-operation with
the Technical University Munich-
Weihenstephan.
A data base for suitability of several
samplers is available now!
Answers to FAQs
Installation of cups, tubes and
bottles in frost free depths only!
Bottles and cups should be installed
at the same level to prevent varying
hydrostatic potentials.
Water samples should be stored
dark and at soil temperature, e. g.
with the UMS sampling bottle box.
Carefully remove the organic layer
before augering in the mineral soil
layer.
Conditioning
We advise not to flush the ceramics
with any acid solution, as this can
destroy ceramics or change their
chemical behaviour. Discard the first
samples after installation.
Suction tubes should be as short as
possible.
Many air bubbles within the system
reduce the vacuum.
Shafts are marked so they can be
installed in the optimal orientation.
Which vacuum should be applied?
To extract soil water in the unsaturated
zone the soil water tension (retention
force) has to be surpassed by the
sampler‘s potential - a vacuum needs
to be applied.
The vacuum should be as close as
possible to the in-situ soil water
tension, as i.e. carbon will fall out in
high vacuum.
Variations of the pressure difference
between the sampler’s inside and
outside will lead to different filtration
results - thus, memory effects
occur. This is prevented by a tension
controlled vacuum unit.
Please note that water can only be
extracted if water is available. The
Example for a tension controlled vacuum
UMS offers three different vacuum methods - the most suitable will depend on your task.
1. The simple method
Evacuate your sampling bottle down
to approx. 50 kPa. If the soil water
tension is lower than 50 kPa, soil
water solution will be extracted until
vacuum and soil water tension are
equalized. When the samples are
collected, the bottle is evacuated
again.
bigger the soil pores are, the less
water is available at rising tensions!
Sampling is possible in stony soils up
to pF 1, in sandy soils up to pF 2, and
in clay soils up to pF 2.7.
Suction cups always act as chemical
and physical filter. High vacuum
applied at soils close to saturation
cause transport of small particles into
the sampler‘s pores. There is nearly
no chance to reverse this process
even by applying pressure, as around
the cup an area of small particles will
get accumulated.
The effective active suction force is
the difference of soil water tension
and applied vacuum.
2. The constant vacuum method
A constant vacuum is continuously
maintained by a regulated vacuum
pump The vacuum can be set
between atmospheric pressure and
85 kPa.
Rain
event
3. Tension controlled extraction
A Tensiometer measures the soil
water tension. The programmable
vacuum station VS automatically
supplies a vacuum in correspondence
to the measured tension. Due to the
numerous functions of the unit an
optimal adaptation to the sampling
task is possible.
Soil water sampling
Leachate samplers for example are
supplied with approx. 6 kPa, while
pore water samplers in silt and loam
are supplied with 10 to 30 kPa. As
clay soils retain water even at higher
tensions a vacuum from 30 to 85 kPa
could be applicable.
Vacuum systems
Soil water sampling with vacuum systems
Extract representative soil water
samples with a constant vacuum, a
timed vacuum or a tension-controlled
vacuum: with the new VS-systems
we can offer you an all-purpose and
modern vacuum regulation.
The VS product range replaces all
previous UMS vacuum stations like
the VK-3 case, the SCS7 and the
SCS8.
As a system solution all units now
incorporate a vacuum pump, sensors
and processor controlled regulation,
suitable for battery powered in-thefiled
use.
1 or 2 regulated vacuum outputs
The VS-single supplies one adjustable
vacuum, either with a fixed constant
value or controlled by a connected
Tensiometer.
For taking samples for example in
the root zone or leachate water both
models VS-twin and VS-pro offer
two vacuum outputs which can be
adjusted to a differing setting.
Tension controlled sampling
A Tensiometer measures the soil water
tension. The vacuum automatically
is set in correspondence to the
measured tension. The advantage
of this method is that the negative
pressure potential which draws on
the soil water is always constant
(or in an adjustable proportion)
and therefore, can be set to a low
value. Thus, the soil water balance
is disturbed as little as possible by
a constant effective potential (i. e. =
difference between vacuum in the
sampler and the soil water tension).
At any time the sampling takes place
under defined conditions. Filtration
and sorption processes on the cup
are constant, memory effects are
more or less excluded.
The figure shows a possible set-up of a VS controlled sampling site
Easy set-up
Configuration and data download
are done with a graphic Windows
interface. The VS-pro additionally has
a graphic LC-display and keypad for
setting the most important functions
of the unit, and where readings and
status are displayed continuously.
Rain
event
Multiple configuration options
All VS units allows many possible
configurations options, like setting
accuracy, intervals and behaviour of
regulation, hysteresis etc.
As a controlling Tensiometer use any
UMS Tensiometer with 4 pin plug,
e. g. the T4 or T5, or a T8 with 8-pin
plug.
Integrated timer
A timer was integrated to allow
sampling in intervals. The vacuum is
only established within the selected
time range. At other times the
pressure difference between soil
water tension and vacuum is set to
zero. This reduces the disturbance of
the soil water balance.
Automated measurements and
logging
The vacuum as well as an optionally
connected Tensiometer are
continuously measured. The readings
are stored in a ring buffer and can be
downloaded to a PC.
The signals of Tensiometer and
vacuum sensor can be measured on
two analogue outputs.
Soil chemistry
BaPS Barometric Process Separation
The Barometric Process Separation (BaPS) is a patented method for the determination of primary microbial carbon and
nitrogen conversion processes in undisturbed soil samples.
Simultaneous measurement
With the BaPS system the following
conversion processes can be
determined simultaneously:
Gross nitrification
Gross denitrification
Soil respiration rate
Benefits
Analysis of undisturbed soil
samples
No application of tracers
No use of inhibitors required
Easy handling and prompt results
Low initial and maintenance costs
Good traceability as calculation
algorithms are visible
Ordering Information
Art. No.
Nitrogen cycle in soils
The measuring principle
Gross nitrification, gross denitrification
and soil respiration rates are
determined by recording air pressure,
O2 and CO2 net balances within a
gas and pressure tight isothermal
system.
Decisive are microbial activities
causing an increase of pressure and
carbon dioxide, and a decrease of
oxygen.
Soil respiration is pressure neutral:
CH 2
O + O 2,Atm
CO 2,Atm
+ H 2
O
Nitrification causes a pressure decrease:
+ -
NH 4
+ 2O 2,Ni
t NO 3
+ H 2
O + 2H +
Denitrification causes a pressure increase:
-
5CH 2
O + 4NO 3
+ 4H + 5CO 2,Den
+ 7H 2
O + 2N 2
Further, the dynamic equilibrium of the CO2- and O2- concentration in the head
space and in the aqueous phase as well the pH-depending solubility of CO2
must be considered.
Applications
Nitrate release
Nitrogen emission
Optimising N-fertilizer usage
Parameterization of microbial
N-conversion processes
Soil respiration activity
System limits
Analysis of anaerobic soil is not
possible, as in anaerobic soil other
processes occur, such as the
development of Methane.
Complete weather stations - custom-made by UMS
Weather data is important for many
research tasks like meteorology,
climate science, crop disease and
pest forecast and last but not least
for soil & hydrological studies.
Water and energy balances are
associated by the current evaporation
of the plants and the transpiration of the
soil. Thus, the knowledge of drainage,
precipitation and evapotranspiration
is essential for hydrologic predictions,
water balance studies and water
resource management.
by the LWF Bavarian State Institute of
Forestry and fulfils recommendations of
the World Meteorological Organization
(WMO).
The WMO recommends to add rain
sampler like the RS200 to compensate
the principle error of tipping bucket rain
gauges. As precipitation varies in an
area four RS200 units per rain gauge
are advisable.
Applications
For quantitative and analytical
surveys on precipitation
Benefits
HDPE and PP material for easy
Effective filtering
Minimised rain loss by evaporation
Filter kit
The special filter kit includes a coarsely
meshed sieve and an inlay funnel with
fine filter nozzle which is additionally
placed inside the collecting funnel.
This prevents that needles or foliage
enter the bottle - but still the loss of
rain by evaporation is minimised as the
adhesion of drops is reduced.
Laboratory evaporation method for the determination of
pF-curves and unsaturated conductivity
The evaporation method according
to Wind/Schindler is a simple and
fast technique to determine retention
curves of soil samples in standard 250
ml soil sampling rings. The unsaturated
Benefits
–
–
–
–
–
–
–
–
–
Simple and flexible handling
Low time and cost expenditure
Expandable
Small size for easy transportation
The water retention curve is
determined with high quality even
close to saturation
The hydraulic functions are reliably
assured by the large number of
taken readings
Simultaneous and accurate
measurement of water retention
curve and hydraulic conductivity
Suitable for all soils (as long as
Tensiometers can be installed)
No special requirements for the
measuring location beside possibly
constant evaporation conditions
during a measurement
conductivity is determined by
measuring the soil water tension
with miniature Tensiometers in two
levels inside the sample, and then
correlated to the soil water tension or
the moisture content.
Durner and Peters developed the
robust correlation procedure to link
the hydraulic functions (SHYPFIT
2.0, Peters and Durner, 2006b). The
data is fitted to a selectable standard
model, i. e. van Genuchten/Mualem,
bimodal van Genuchten/Mualem
or Brooks and Corey. The Model
parameters can be set before, during
or after a measuring procedure. Thus,
the results are verified and the values
for dry range and saturation are
calculated according to the selected
model.
Limits
– The operating range is limited
to the measuring range of the
Tensiometers
– Poor resolution of the hydraulic
conductivity near saturation
(especially in sandy soils)
Execute a measurement
If a sample unit is placed on the scale
the software automatically starts the
weighing menu.
If more than one sample is tested
at a time each sample is placed on
the scale in turn, for example twice
a day. The software automatically
recognizes each sample unit and
stores the weight in correlation to this
sample. A maximum of 20 samples
can be tested simultaneously.
Independent from the weighing the
soil water tensions are automatically
measured. Pressure transducers and
electronics are housed in the sensor
unit, and all sensor units are linked
with the tensioLINK bus to your PC
for continuous logging of the soil
water tension.
Hyprop
The advantage compared to other
methods is that the hydraulic
properties are determined during a
natural drying process of the soil.
Hyprop’s outstanding features are
the simple handling and the modular
setup. For a start up you just need
the HYPROP starter set and a scale.
Existing laboratory scales, minimum
requirements are a serial connection
and a measuring range of 2000 grams,
can be integrated. This set can be
extended to up to 20 sample units.
Together with the correlation
procedure you get a truly practical
method which offers extraordinary
results in the determination of
hydraulic functions with low
measuring expenditure.
we offer the full service from first
conception to design, supply,
installation, training, initial start up
and maintenance.
To ensure a reliable operation
in the long run, a complete
service catalogue according to your
demands is planned in advance.
This will not only include the ideal
specifications for instrumentation
and measuring equipment, but will
also consider the later operation,
maintenance, data handling and data
evaluation.
„It is our aim to give you the best possible support in your tasks“
This principle is the basis for our complete range of activity, sorted into six service categories:
Signal definition of our Tensiometers
Tensiometers measure soil water tensions (suction forces), which are negative pressures. Therefore, tension readings
of our Tensiometers have a negative sign. In reverse, if soils are saturated and the Tensiometer is below a water level,
the readings have a positive sign (pressure of water).
This changed definition has become effective on 1st January 2006.
