Module 1 –<br />

<strong>What</strong> is <strong>Racism</strong>?<br />

OBJECTIVES OF THE MODULE<br />

- To consider what we think racism is <strong>and</strong> <strong>to</strong> underst<strong>and</strong> what others<br />

think it is.<br />

- To provoke reflection on some of the mechanisms related <strong>to</strong> racism:<br />

prejudices, stereotypes, identity, <strong>and</strong> racism.<br />

- To underst<strong>and</strong> that racist behavior translates in<strong>to</strong> privileges <strong>and</strong><br />

weapons of power for some groups <strong>and</strong> in<strong>to</strong> disadvantages for other<br />

groups.<br />

1 A Critical Incident 2<br />

“I’m a girl from a South American country <strong>and</strong> I’m sixteen years old. I’ve<br />

never talked <strong>to</strong> Spanish people like that, about why racism exists. To solve<br />

racism? That’s really hard because, I don’t know, the truth is… I think that<br />

we have <strong>to</strong> talk about racism more.”<br />

“I came <strong>to</strong> Spain because my mother married my step-father. But even so, I<br />

don’t know the real reason she came. Before I came, my friends gave me a<br />

big stuffed Garfield this big <strong>and</strong> a card, but I didn’t bring them, I left them<br />

there, in my country. I didn’t want <strong>to</strong> bring anything from there. I <strong>to</strong>ok it all<br />

<strong>and</strong> on a piece of l<strong>and</strong> my aunt had for fruit trees <strong>and</strong> everything, I <strong>to</strong>ok it all<br />

<strong>and</strong> I buried it there, I didn’t bring anything at all from there. The truth is, I<br />
