Top will host the first Melbourne Cup event on the 

grassy fields, truly capturing the on-track experience 

usually reserved for special invites of Eagle Farm or 

Doomben racecourses. 

In true glorious style, this event goes above and 

beyond any expectations. While Eagle Farm can put on 

a marquee on the field, we are hosting a Big Top that is 

fully air conditioned AND has solid flooring under 

foot, ensuring those stunning new shoes bought for the 

day won’t sink. 

Then there’s the entertainment within. Live music is 

played throughout the day with big TV screens 

everywhere so you won’t miss a thing. 

If you’d like to place a bet, that’s easy too. Access is 

available to the club’s TAB area via a private entrance. 

While you wait for the race, there’s also a man-cave 

and ladies lounge to keep you busy. 

In true Melbourne Cup styling, there’ll be sweeps, 

raffles, a fashion show from local designer Amy (with 

sales of key items available), a beautiful two-course 

meal and, of course, non-stop drinks all afternoon.

Doors open early for club’s top day 

ENSURING all locals have the 

opportunity to experience the spectacle of 

Melbourne Cup, the club is once again 

opening the doors at 8.30am on Tuesday, 

November 4 for the big day. 

Free for all our members and their 

guests, entertainment will be playing 

from 10.30am by Too Many Hands and 

will keep your toes tapping right through 

until the big race. 

Once the race is finished, Jess Preston 

will take the stage and have you enjoying 

the afternoon with some great tunes. 

Then at 6pm, the night will come alive 

with heat three of Voice Your Talent 

singing competition. 

This big line-up will be sure to have 

something for everyone. 

Throughout the day, the club will have 

all screens focused on the Melbourne 

track. 

The TAB will open from 8.30am when 

club doors open, ensuring you don’t miss 

a race all day long. 

There’ll also be sweeps on sale in the 

main foyer along with an array of snack 

foods in the sports bar so you won’t have 

to travel far to keep your hunger in check. 

Just after lunch there’ll also be fashions 

on the field in Legends Lounge where 

some great prizes will be given for the 

best dressed.

the very start, with her angelic voice and 

amazing stage presence. Her gorgeous outfits 

complemented her song choices well, keeping

the winning title of the very first Voice Your 

Talent singing competition at the club.

Bruce takes $5200 prize 

IT took three draws but Bruce Whittaker 

was the lucky member in the 

September Birthday Card Draw. 

Not present at the first two draws were 

Margaret Broman, membership number 88283, 

or Kevin O’Brian (16125). 

But an ecstatic Bruce (12890) was there 

when his number was called and he claimed 

the monthly $5200 prize. 

One lucky member claims the major prize 

on the last Thursday of the month. 

Between 5.30pm and 7.30pm, the club 

BECOMING a member of your local club 

was once a rite of passage. 

It meant you had been accepted by your 

local brethren and had become a valued 

member of the clan. It provided you with 

a “home away from home” with another 

much-loved family. 

The Redcliffe Leagues Club is built and 

continues to grow on the valued members 

that support it – and the more support it 

receives, the better the club can become 

and the more support we can pass on to 

the local community. 

Of course, members and their guests 

still frequent the club to catch up with one

the old times and wonder what is yet to

backyard pool water survey to determine the health 

of Australian pools at the end of the winter “off peak”

Vegetables come up trumps 

SCOTTISH researchers have found that not 

only will a diet high in fruit and vegetables 

make you feel better, it will also make you 

look better. 

Lead study researcher Ross Whitehead, 

from the School of Psychology at the 

University of St. Andrews, said: “We found 

that within a six-week period, fluctuation in 

fruit and vegetable consumption was associated 

with skin-colour changes.” 

The fruit and vegetable intake of 35 people 

was observed over a six-week period. A 

higher level of consumption was linked with 

higher levels of red and yellow colouring in 

skin, caused by carotenoids including betacarotene 

and lycopene. 

A second study then linked the changes in 

skin colour to increased attractiveness. 

“Our study suggests that an increase in 

fruit and veggie consumption of around 

three portions over a six-week period is sufficient 

to convey perceptible improvements 

in the apparent healthiness and attractiveness 

of facial skin,” Dr Whitehead said. 

“Conversely, those that worsened their 

diet became paler. Eat more fruits and veggies 

to improve your appearance.”

Colts come home with wet sail 

AN impressive defensive showing 

from the Dolphins paved the way 

for their 34-20 FOGS Colts grand final 

victory over season rivals the Burleigh 

Bears at Suncorp Stadium. 

It was clear the Dolphins had emphasised 

defensive pressure early on, with the Redcliffe 

side rushing off the line to pressure the 

Burleigh ball carriers. 

Minor premiers Burleigh enjoyed the better 

field position early thanks largely to a number 

of penalties, however the Dolphins held firm. 

Their first foray forward brought the opening 

points of the match, with a penalty in the ruck 

providing an opportunity for Josh Beehag to 

add the two points from directly in front and 

give Redcliffe the early advantage. 

The Dolphins extended their lead soon after, 

with Richard Skelton storming through two 

defenders on his way over the line. Beehag 

added the extras once more for a 10-0 Redcliffe 

lead. 

The Dolphins weren’t ready to stop there 

however and when Tyson Gamble crashed his 

way through under the posts Redcliffe’s lead 

was out to 14 points. 

It was only a matter of time before the minor 

premiers clicked into gear however. On the 

back of repeat attacking sets, five-eighth Sam 

Grant stepped through the defence to bring up 

Burleigh’s first points. Brett Stratton crossed 

with one minute to go in the half, sending 

Burleigh into the break only two points down. 

Burleigh came out after the break with a 

point to prove, starting far better than the first 

half. 

A break down the left edge seemed destined 

for a Burleigh try, if not for an impressive 

cover tackle from Beehag to kill the play 

metres short of the line. 

Burleigh would not leave without points 

however, and when Grant converted from a 

penalty the Bears had evened the ledger. 

The Bears were forced to settle for another 

penalty goal attempt on their next forward 

entry, with the Redcliffe defence holding 

strong. 

With the Bears poised to take the lead for the 

first time in the match, Grant’s kick instead 

bounced off the upright and back into the field 

of play, where the Dolphins managed to 

recover. 

This would prove the turning point in the 

match, with the Dolphins piling on the next 

three tries. 

An impressive cut-out ball found Lui Tusa 

on the left edge, who chipped through the 

defence and regathered to put it down in the 

corner. 

Five minutes later an errant tap by a Bears 

defender gave Rinsma Saueha the opportunity 

to recover and score untouched. Tusa’s second 

try was even easier, with the Dolphins 

identifying a two-on-one on the left hand side. 

Burleigh left a number of opportunities 

begging toward the end of the match, with 

sloppy handling around the ruck proving 

costly. Grant kept the Bears in with a chance 

when the half weaved his way through the 

Dolphins defence to score next to the posts. 

However it was not to be, with Beehag 

capping off a solo 14-point effort with a try 

down the left sideline to ice the match.

Aaron snatches medal 

DOLPHINS centre Aaron Whitchurch 

held off a fast-finishing Jon Green 

to claim the 2014 Peter Leis Medal for 

the Dolphins Player of the Year. 

The prestigious medal is decided by three 

judges who each award points on a 3-2-1 basis 

after each competition match. 

The Queensland Residents centre has had a 

stellar 2014 season for the Dolphins, but 

voting didn't go all his own way. 

After the first set of votes were revealed 

after round 7, Adrian Davis was sitting on top 

of the polling with 22 votes. 

Close behind Davis was Jake Marketo 17, 

Green 14, Stewart Mills 11 followed by 

Whitchurch and David Hala on 8. 

However, when the next group of voting 

was revealed after round 14, the big centre 

was on top of the leader board with 27 votes. 

Hot on his heels were Marketo on 26, Davis 

25, Green 23 and youngster Paul Byrnes, who 

came from nowhere to poll 18 votes. 

Fellow Broncos Cameron Cullen (16) and 

Hala (15) were also making a move up the 

ladder, keeping everyone honest. 

After round 20, it seemed like a matter of 

how far Whitchurch would win by as the 

representative centre polled another 23 votes 

to sit well clear on the ladder with 50 votes. 

Sitting second were Marketo and Davis on 

31 with Green on 27 and the vastly improved 

Oliver Regan on 26. 

Co-captain Green's outstanding finish to the 

season saw him poll 30 out of a maximum 

54 votes in the final six rounds, but it 

wasn't enough to rein in Whitchurch, who 

advanced his tally to 67, giving him a 10-vote 

win. 

In third place Marketo and Davis still 

couldn't be split on 37 and Cullen rounded out 

the top five on 34 votes. 

It was a big night for Whitchurch, who also 

picked up the Tony Obst Trophy for the Intrust 

Super Cup Players’ Player award.
