Welcome to Unisa 

Dear Prospective Student 

I am delighted that you are considering Unisa as your university of 

choice for 2011. 

Unisa is an internationally accredited open distance learning institution, 

which means that you, the student, become the focus of all we do. We give 

you the choice over what, when and where you learn, how you learn and at 

what pace you learn. 

If you have just finished school or have been attending at a contact/ 

conventional university, you will very likely be used to face-to-face contact 

with your teachers and fellow students. Studying at Unisa, however, works 

a little differently and you will be required to do much of your studying 

on your own. You will receive most of your study material in the form 

of study guides and tutorial letters, which you will have to work through 

independently, but you will be able to contact your lecturers and tutors if 

you need to. 

Approximately 300 000 students register to study through Unisa each year 

and I sincerely hope that you will become part of the Unisa student body in 

2011, so that one day you too can count yourself among the numbers of 

esteemed Unisa alumni.

1 What does it mean to be an ODL student? 

Unisa is an open distance learning (ODL) institution. But what does this mean for you? 

If you have finished school or have been attending a contact university, you will most likely 

be used to face-to-face contact with your teachers and fellow students in a classroom 

setting. Distance learning is very different. As a Unisa student, you will be required to study 

independently, that is, on your own. You will receive study material in the form of study guides 

and tutorial letters for each of your modules, and you will be able to contact your lecturers and 

tutors, but for the most part, you will work on your own. 

So what exactly is open distance learning? In a nutshell, you, the student, become the focus of all 

we do. To simplify the concept of ODL, Unisa has developed an ODL student walk to help you 

understand the process. This walk comprises five levels. And for each level, we have compiled a 

set of products (brochure, CD/DVD, FAQs & website), which contains essential information about 

the level. 

This brochure, my Registration @ Unisa, deals with level 3 of the ODL student walk. 

Level 1 

You will learn more about Unisa and how Unisa works. Unisa is an open distance learning (ODL) 

university. Through ODL, you have the choice over what, when and where you learn, how you 

learn and at what pace you learn. However, you must be sure that you are prepared to study 

independantly and that Unisa is the right university for you. 

Level 2 

This is the applications level. As a prospective student, you must apply to register at Unisa. 

You may not register to study through Unisa if you have not submitted an application form and 

received confirmation from Unisa that your application was successful. 

Level 3 

This is the registration level. If Unisa approved your application to study in level 2, you will now 

be able to register for your approved qualification. You may now register at one of our 

campuses or regional centres, or via the internet or mail. All the information you need to register 

will be provided in this brochure. Work through this brochure carefully to ensure that your 

registration to study through Unisa in 2011 is processed timeously. 

Level 4 

We will give you the information you need to be a successful Unisa student. This is a very 

important phase, as it provides you with an orientation to studying through Unisa, and is where 

teaching and learning is initiated. You will receive your study material and will have to plan your 

activities, study independently and submit assignments to demonstrate your competencies. At 

the end of the semester (or year in some cases), you will need to write examinations at an exam 

centre close to you. Much of the information about Unisa’s services and procedures is found in 

the brochure/DVD entitled my Studies @ Unisa. 

Level 5 

This is the level for Unisa alumni, that is, Unisa graduates. By this level of the ODL student walk, 

you will be a Unisa alumnus. The university would like to communicate with all alumni on a 

regular basis, so we urge you to maintain contact with us.

Where do I start my registration 

and do I qualify? 

To help you complete the registration process efficiently, we’d like you to choose which of the 

following statements best suits you: 

I am re-registering for the same qualification. What should I do? 

If this statement describes you, go to the section 3 of this brochure (page 10). 

I am starting a new qualification. What should I do? 

If this statement describes you, please work through the rest of this brochure carefully. 

Do I qualify to study for my new qualification? 

Unisa is a South African public university, which means that all Unisa students must meet certain 

statutory admission requirements. Although admission requirements may differ from qualification 

to qualification, there are certain basic and minimum admission requirements that you must meet 

before you will be allowed to study through Unisa. 

Bachelor’s degree 

To be able to register for a bachelor’s degree, you must hold one of the following certificates: 

n National Senior Certificate with entry level: degree 

n A Senior Certificate with matriculation or university admission endorsement (exemption) 

n A certificate of full or conditional exemption issued by the Matriculation Board of Higher 

Education South Africa (HESA) 

n A National Certificate (vocational) at level 4 with entry level: degree 

If you do not have an exemption certificate, please make contact with Unisa’s Access and 

Matriculation Exemption Office about whether you qualify for any other types of exemption 

certificates (eg on the grounds of foreign qualifications or post-school qualifications). 

Bachelor of Technology degree 

To be able to register for a Bachelor of Technology degree, you must hold an 

applicable National Diploma. 

National diplomas 

To be able to register for a diploma, you must hold one of the following: 

n Hold a National Senior Certificate with entry level: diploma/degree 

n Hold a Senior or School Leaving Certificate with or without a matriculation exemption/ 

endorsement, but with at least five subjects or higher and/or standard grade 

n Qualify for a certificate of full or conditional exemption issued by the Matriculation Board of 

Higher Education South Africa (HESA) 

n Hold a Standard 8 or Grade 10 certificate, be 23 years and older, and have 

3 years work experience 

n Hold a National Certificate (vocational) at level 4 with entry level: diploma 

Non-degree purposes (NDP) 

To be able to register for any module for non-degree purposes, you must hold one of the following: 

n Qualify for a certificate of full or conditional exemption issued by the Matriculation Board of 

Higher Education South Africa (HESA) 

n Meet the admission requirements for the programme level on which the module is offered. 

Honours degrees 

Please refer to the course information provided in this brochure for the admission requirements 

for honours degrees. 


3 Do I know what I am registering for? 

Unisa is an open distance learning (ODL) university, which means that you can study at home or 

even pursue your career while studying. Through ODL, we give you the choice over what, when 

and where you learn, how you learn and at what pace you learn. You must, however, be sure that 

you are prepared to study independently at a distance. This is why it is so important for you to 

find out before you register if Unisa is the right university for you. 

Does Unisa offer my qualification of choice? 

Go to page 25 of this brochure to make sure that Unisa offers your qualification of choice. 

Refer to Unisa’s brochure entitled my Modules @ Unisa for specific information about the modules 

related to your qualification of choice. Please ensure that you meet the admission requirements 

for your qualification of choice before completing and submitting your registration form. 

Are you aware of Unisa’s rules? 

Read Unisa’s brochure entitled my Rules @ Unisa for the rules for students studying through 

the university. 

Have you made arrangements to finance your studies 

and pay for your prescribed books? 

You will have to pay a minimum fee before you will be allowed to register to study through Unisa 

in 2011 and all outstanding amounts must be paid by the prescribed due dates. Go to page 114 

of this brochure for the prescribed student fees for 2011. 

Please remember that in addition to your prescribed student fees, you will also have to buy your 

prescribed books for each module. Students often calculate and budget for their study fees, but 

forget that they have to buy prescribed books, which may add substantially to the cost of your 

studies. If you are unsure about what your prescribed books might cost you, we suggest that you 

contact Unisa before you register (012) 429 4152; vospresc@unisa.acv.za) to request an advance 

list of your prescribed books. Unisa’s official booksellers can be contacted for quotations. For a 

list of Unisa’s official booksellers go to page 140. 

Is there an examination venue near you? 

Have you checked that there is a Unisa exam venue close to where you live? Go to page 133 of 

this brochure and make sure that you will not have to travel long distances to get to an exam 

venue. Travelling long distances to an exam venue can be both demanding on you and expensive. 

Have you checked Unisa’s provisional exam timetable for 2011? 

Unisa publishes a provisional examination timetable for each academic year. Go to page 142 of 

this brochure and use this provisional examination timetable for 2011 to check that there are 

no clashes for your courses. Please note that this is a provisional examination timetable and may 

change at the university’s discretion.

How do I register? 

Unisa offers three easy ways to register:

Log on to the internet and go to the Unisa website: www.unisa.ac.za. 

Click on “Registration at Unisa” and then on “Web registration”. 

Enter your student number in the block provided and follow the links. 

Check your personal details on the screen and change any details that are incorrect. 

Enter the module(s) for which you want to register. Ensure that 

n you meet all the pre-requisites and that you are eligible to register for the 

module selected 

n you have entered the correct module code 

n you have selected the correct semester (1 = first semester; 2 = second semester) 

n you have indicated which language (English or Afrikaans) you want to 

receive your study material in 

Please note that you may register for a maximum of 10 modules per year.

Choose your mode of delivery of study material. 

Pay your fees. Use the fee quotation link 

http://www2.unisa.ac.za/aol/asp/srrqn01c.asp?system=SOL to obtain a total fee quotation for 

the cost of the modules that you have selected. Note the minimum fee payment that must be 

made before Unisa will begin to process your registration. If you are satisfied that you can 

afford the modules selected, and have a credit card, you can make payment online by clicking 

on http://registration.unisa.ac.za/info/payment/index.html. If you cannot afford the fees, go 

back to your choice of modules and delete some of the modules. Then follow the steps 

outlined above. If you are satisfied with the modules selected, but do not have a credit card, 

you can make payment at an Absa Bank or at a branch of the South African Post Office and 

fax the deposit slip to Unisa at 012 429 4150. 

Complete the process by submitting your registration form.

Read this brochure and complete your registration form before going to a Unisa office. 

Take your registration form and this brochure with you when you register. 

You will be referred to a self-help computer at which you can finalise your registration 

by following the prompts/instructions on the screen. Unisa staff will be available in the 

registration halls to assist you. 

Once you get to a computer, you must do the following: 

n Type in your student number. 

n You will be automatically guided to a screen that requires you to verify the correctness 

of your personal information. If you are satisfied with the details, click “Yes”. If you 

need to make changes, click “No”. This will allow you to make changes to your 

personal information. When you are satisfied with the changes, click “Yes” to 

submit the information. 

n Now select the modules for which you want to register. Use the drop-down menu 

provided for each module. After successfully selecting the modules section and accepting 

the information on the summary page, “Proceed with temporary registration”. 

n If you have a credit card, you may pay your fees online. Alternatively, make use of 

one of the other modes of payment indicated in this brochure. If you pay at least the 

minimum fee at the self-help computer, you may immediately print out a confirmation 

of your registration. If you have not made the required minimum payment, you will 

receive a printout indicating the details of the modules you selected and the payment 

details (minimum fee payable, total fee and payment options). 

n If your registration has been finalised, please go to the CD hall to receive your free CD of 

study material. This will help you to begin planning your study activities.

Please do not include any cash or cheques in the envelope with your registration form.

Choose your mode of delivery of study material 

Upon Registration, you must select the mode of delivery for your study material that suites you 

best. Your study material can either be posted to you through the South African Post Office 

Safemail service, or couriered to you when you register at no additional cost for either option. 

Should you select the courier option, you must provide Unisa with your cellphone number and a 

physical address to which your study material package may be delivered between 8:00 and 16:00. 

Should you select the South African Post Office Safemail option (for which there is also no cost), 

you will be required to collect the parcel from the post office. Please ensure that your address, 

suburb and postal code details are correct to avoid any delays. The post office will send you an 

SMS and letter notification to advise you when the parcel is ready for collection together with 

the track and trace number that must be presented at the post office for collection. You must 

collect the package within 30 days at the post office with your identity document, if not, it will be 

returned to Unisa. The above modes of delivery apply to the first package of study material only. 

Subsequent information, such as tutorial letters, which you will receive during the course of the 

year, will be sent to you via the South African Post Office ordinary mail service, even if your initial 

selection upon Registration was courier. 

Once you are a registered Unisa student, you may also obtain your study material on CD, free of 

charge, at certain of Unisa’s offices. You may also register on myUnisa, Unisa’s student portal, to 

access your study material online.

What happens now? 

If you submitted your registration form and minimum registration fee by the closing date for 

registrations, Unisa will process your registration and send you your study material by post or 

courier depending on the choice you indicated on your registration form. 

The next information brochure you will receive from Unisa will be the my Studies @ Unisa 

brochure. This brochure will provide you with an orientation for studing through Unisa and will 

help you to plan your studies.

Frequently answered questions 

How will Unisa communicate with me? 

Unisa provides all registered students with a free e-mail account known as myLife. Unisa will only use this e-mail address 

to communicate with you via e-mail. If you would prefer to use another e-mail address, please forward your myLife 

e-mails to that address so that Unisa can keep in touch with you (eg send you confirmation of your registration). 

Unisa will also send you SMSs when necessary and will use the cellphone number you provided at the point of registration. 

If you do not want to receive SMSs from Unisa, please contact the Unisa Contact Centre to cancel this service. 

What should I do if I need an academic record or credit certificate? 

Send an e-mail to study-info@unisa.ac.za to request a copy of your academic record or credit certificate. Remember to 

include your student number in the subject line of all e-mails. 

For how many modules may I register in one academic year? 

You may not register for more than 60 NQF credits in a semester, that is, not more than 5 modules per semester of 12 

credits each. This does not include supplementary and/or aegrotat examinations which you may have been given in a 

previous academic year. Any modules taken for non-degree/non-diploma purposes also count as part of the 60 credits. 

Students registering for year modules may not register for more than 120 NQF credits per year.

Can I transfer from another university to Unisa? 

Unisa will consider an application for registration from another university, except if you were excluded/suspended from a 

prior institution of higher education on grounds of misconduct. 


Can I register with Unisa and another university simultaneously? 

Unisa will accept you on condition that the qualification registered at Unisa is registered for non-degree purposes, and 

that you have written permission from the other university allowing such concurrent registration. You will be required to 

submit the written permission from the other university at the point of registration. 

May I register for two or more formal programmes at Unisa simultaneously? 

You may not register for two formal qualifications at Unisa concurrently. 

Does Unisa assist students with disabilities? 

Unisa’s Advocacy and Resource Centre for Students with Disabilities (ARCSWiD) will assist and support students with 

disabilities. If you require assistance, please indicate the nature of your disability on your registration form and contact 

ARCSWiD as soon as possible. Also complete the special assistance form, ARCSWiD01, contained later in this brochure.

What should I do to...? 

You may make any of the changes below by logging on to Unisa’s student portal, myUnisa (http://my.unisa.ac.za), and 

following the registration prompts. If you would prefer the university to assist you, please submit your request in writing 

(using the prescribed forms) either by post (The Registrar, PO Box 392, Unisa, 0003) or by fax (012 429 4150). 

n Add study units 

You must apply in writing using the prescribed form or online to add study units. You must also pay the necessary fee to 

the university by the relevant closing date for registration. 

n Cancel study units 

You may cancel a study unit. You will, however, forfeit the applicable portion of the fees paid 

(this is related to the date of cancellation). 

n Change my address and/or telephone number 

You must submit all requests to change telephone numbers and/or postal, physical or courier addresses in writing using 

the prescribed form or online. 

n Change my exam centre 

Requests to change examination centres must be done at least one month prior to the commencement of the respective 

examination period. 

n Apply for course credit exemptions 

You cannot be exempted from more than 50% of the modules for the qualification for which you are registered. You 

must also have met the requisite admission requirement at the time of having passed the study units at your previous 

institution. You cannot receive exemption for both major subjects.

Will my ordinary conditional exemption affect my registration? 

If you have an ordinary conditional exemption, you will not be allowed to proceed to second or further years of study until 

you have passed the outstanding subject necessary to meet the condition of your ordinary conditional exemption. 

What is recognition of prior learning (RPL)? 

Unisa’s RPL programme allows you to apply for recognition and credit for skills and learning acquired through means 

other than through formal learning programmes. Your skill and knowledge will be evaluated; if it is found to be relevant, 

you may be granted appropriate credits. RPL may thus make it possible for you to either gain access to or earn credits 

towards a Unisa qualification based on prior non-formal learning, thereby reducing your study time. If you are interested in 

RPL, please send an e-mail to rpl@unisa.ac.za. 

Am I affected by work-integrated learning (WIL)? 

Specific modules in vocational programmes (qualifications) require students to gain experience in a working environment, 

under the supervision of a suitably qualified and experienced person. This experience is called work-integrated learning 

(WIL) or experiential learning. A portfolio of work is compiled by the student and assessed by the university. Students who 

do not have placement at an employer can contact the relevant academic department which will, in collaboration with the 

WIL and regional offices of Unisa, endeavour to find the student a suitable employer to gain this experience.

Registration rules 

1 The registration form 

1.1 At registration every student must complete a registration form in terms of which s/he binds him- /herself to all 

the rules of the University. 

1.2 The content of the form is the basis of the student’s contract with the University. 

1.3 It is the student’s responsibility to inform the University of any change/s to personal data contained on the 

registration form – notably, name change, address change and/ or change in telephone numbers – in writing 

and using the prescribed Unisa forms. 

1.4 Students who are entitled to continue their studies must submit a new registration form for each new 

academic year in which they register. 

2 Choice of modules per semester/per annum 

2.1 Students must select their modules by applying the curriculum in the templates that follow later in this 

brochure and making use of the my Modules @ Unisa brochure. 

2.2 The onus is on the student to refer to the provisional exam timetable included in this brochure to select 

modules and to ensure that there are no module clashes. No registration will be allowed where there is an 

exam clash between modules selected. 

2.3 In the case of students registering for an Honours qualification that have a research component, such students 

are strongly advised not to register for the research methodology modules until they have completed at least 3 

of the other Honours papers. 

2.4 A student’s registration per semester and per annum is subject to the maximum number of NQF (National 

Qualifications Framework) credits as set out in the Admission Policy. 

NB: Undergraduate modules usually consist of 12 NQF credits 

Honours modules usually consist of 24 NQF credits 

2.5 Modules registered for non-degree purposes will also be taken into account when calculating the maximum 

NQF credits for a semester/year of study. 

2.6 Students in the final semester of study for a qualification weighted at 240 credits or more may apply to register 

for an additional 24 credits if to do so will enable the student to complete the registered qualification. 

Application to take the additional modules must be made to the Deputy Registrar on the Unisa prescribed 

form. In order to be eligible for the application of this rule, the affected student must have a minimum overall 

average of 55% in all modules previously passed. 

2.7 Where the final year of a qualification comprises only year modules (as opposed to semester modules), the 

above rule will evenly apply: however, application for the additional 24 credits may be made at the beginning of 

the final year of study. 

3 Pre-requisite modules 

3.1 A student may not register for a module for which s/he has not passed the pre-requisite, except if s/he has 

previously attempted the summative assessment for the pre-requisite and failed the module. In such cases, the 

student may concurrently register the prescribed pre-requisite module with any/all of the follow-on modules. 

3.2 In the case where pre-requisites are not specifically indicated for modules in undergraduate qualifications, 

students are strongly advised to register for the 1st level modules before registering for the 2nd level modules 

of a subject and so on. This is in order to ensure appropriate scaffolding of learning. 

3.3 Students must also ensure that they meet the admission requirements for the modules, where relevant. 

4 Co-requisite modules 

4.1 Students must register for prescribed co-requisite modules simultaneously. 

5 Concurrent registration 

5.1 Students may register concurrently for formal and non formal qualifications at the University, with the consent 

of the Colleges involved. 

5.2 Students may not register for a formal qualification at the University, if concurrently registered for a formal 

qualification or non-formal program at another University; except that such students may be allowed to register 

for non degree purposes (NDP) at Unisa, if their registration is accompanied by a letter of permission from the 

other University granting permission for concurrent studies for non-degree purposes and indicating the 

modules to be taken at Unisa. Note that the permission letter is only valid for one academic year. 


6 Registration for non-degree purposes (NDP) 

6.1 Students intending to register for a module – even for non-degree purpose – must meet the admission 

requirements for the qualification in which the study unit is offered, eg registration for a study unit at 

Honours level can only be considered if student meets admission requirment for the Honours qualification 

concerned. Additionally, student must meet pre and co-requisites for modules to be taken for NDP. 

6.2 A student may be allowed to register a maximum of 4 modules for non-degree purposes; whilst registered 

for a formal undergraduate Diploma or Degree qualification that has a minimum duration of 3 or 4 years. 

6.3 A student may be allowed to register a maximum of 2 modules for non-degree purposes; whilst registered 

for a formal undergraduate Diploma or Degree qualification that has a minimum duration of 1 or 2 years, 

exclusive of the University Access Programme for which no modules may be taken for NDP whilst 

registered for the Access Programme. 

6.4 A student who is registered for an honours bachelor’s degree may, only with the special permission of the 

Executive Dean of the respective College that offers the Honours qualification, also register in the same 

academic year for not more than two undergraduate modules for non-degree purposes (NDP). 

6.5 A student who is registered for a master’s degree may, only with the special permission of the Executive 

Dean of the respective College that offers the Masters qualification, also register in the same academic year 

for two undergraduate modules or for one honours module or the corresponding number of modules on the 

same level for non-degree purposes (NDP). 

6.6 A student who is registered for a doctor’s degree may, only with the special permission of the Executive 

Dean of the respective College that offers the Doctors qualification, also register in the same academic year for 

two undergraduate modules or for one honours module or one master’s module or the corresponding number 

of modules on the same level for non-degree purposes (NDP). 

7 Application for credits and exemptions 

7.1 Students applying for credits and exemptions for studies passed at other accredited higher education 

institutions must do so on the prescribed form and in accordance with the Unisa rules as stated in the 

Unisa Brochures. 

7.2 Specifically, 

7.2.1 Applicants must meet the admission requirements for the qualification for which they are applying for 

credit/s and exemption/s; and 

7.2.2 A maximum of 50% of the prescribed NQF credits may be awarded in the form of 

credits and exemptions. 

7.3 A student may not be exempted for more than one major subject toward a qualification for which 2 major 

subjects are prescribed. 

7.4 No exemptions will be granted towards an Honours or Masters qualification from any completed qualification. 

8 Cancellation of registration 

8.1 A student who voluntarily cancels his/her registration of a module for any reason whatsoever, will forfeit 

either a part or the entire fee paid, as prescribed in the fee payment schedule for this year. 

8.2 A student may not cancel a module that is a co-requisite unless the module which has the co-requisite is 

also cancelled.

Rules 

This qualification will be offered for the last time in 2011. As from 2012 it will be replaced with a Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced Accounting Sciences. Students 

who register for this qualification prior to or in 2011 will be allowed to complete it up to the end of 2013. Alternatively, they may convert to a new qualification. 

From 2012 a SAICA accredited Bachelor’s degree is required for admission. Students with a non-SAICA accredited Bachelor’s degree or diploma will first have to 

complete the Advanced Diploma in Accounting Sciences (still to be accredited) for admission.

Student fees 

The university will not accept cash or cheques at any of its offices. Cash may, however, still 

be paid into the university’s bank account at any Absa branch or at any branch of the South 

African Post Office. 

The government is currently investigating the policy regarding the subsidy for foreign students. Your attention is drawn 

to the fact that prescribed student fees could increase substantially in the future. The university reserves the right to 

charge fees in certain countries in the currency of that country. 

Prescribed student fees for 2011 

Fees are valid for the 2011 academic year only. Prescribed student fees include registration, examinations (excluding 

special, aegrotat and supplementary examinations) and admission to discussion classes. 

n Minimum amount payable at the point of registration 

A minimum amount is payable on registration in respect of each module or paper for which you register. 

The minimum amount payable on registration is dependent on the number of individual study units for which you 

register. A minimum initial amount is payable with each registration. The minimum amount payable on registration 

will be forfeited should the relevant study unit be cancelled. Note that compulsory miscellaneous fees, where 

applicable, are also payable on registration. These fees include the levy for students in foreign countries and levies 

for additional study material. After payment of the initial amount on registration, the outstanding balance must be 

paid before the relevant dates. 

n Prescribed student fees 

The levy for students in foreign countries must be paid in addition to the minimum initial payment on registration. 

A student must be in possession of a student number before registration can be processed or fees paid or deposited 

into the Absa bank account. The fees for all fourth-level modules will be charged as for honours-level modules. 

Any legal fees that arise due to actions taken by Unisa to collect unpaid student fees will be for 

the account of students.

4 Legal fees

6 Bursary holders and students whose studies are underwritten by 

their employers or other institutions 

No letter of guarantee/intent will be accepted by the University. Students in this category must pay at least the relevant 

prescribed initial payment on registration, together with any compulsory miscellaneous fees (eg the levy for foreign 

students). Fees must be paid before the relevant closing date(s). Accounts are issued only to students and not to any 

third party or other institutions. A quotation of fees payable may be issued on request, which you may hand to the 

relevant institution before registration. 


7 Financial Aid 

National Students Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) 

Students may apply for a NSFAS loan for assistance with study fees if they meet 

the following criteria: 

n must be a South African citizen 

n studying towards a first tertiary qualification or studying towards a second tertiary qualification if such a 

qualification is necessary in order to practise in your chosen career (eg PGCE) 

n able to demonstrate a potential for academic success 

n financially needy 

Eduloan 

People employed in government departments may apply for assistance with study fees if they 

meet the following criteria: 

n they must be in the direct employ of the SA Government or a permanent member of the SANDF 

n they can apply for themselves, or sponsor their spouses/children/guardians 

n loan instalment may not exceed 25% of basic salary
