(ii) These qualifications comprise two specialisation directions, namely Intermediate and Senior Phase.<br />

(iii) Teaching Practice is a compulsory component in this programme and must be taken according to specific criteria. Foreign students or students intending studying<br />

outside <strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong> must do Teaching Practice in <strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong>n schools so that they are visited, observed and supported by UNISA academic / teaching staff.<br />

Rules<br />

A student who has successfully completed this qualification will be able to teach from birth to grade 3. Please avail yourself – prior to registration – <strong>of</strong> the practical<br />

teaching requirements. <strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong>n Students intending to study outside <strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong> and applicants from overseas must do Teaching Practice in <strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong>n<br />

schools so that they are visited, observed and supported by the assigned UNISA Academic/ Teaching staff.<br />

Declaration Form, (DSAR05) is available from UNISA Admissions and Registrations to be completed for this purpose. If the Declaration Form is not completed and<br />

signed, the student may not be admitted and / or registered.<br />

Students, who intend to seek employment with the Department <strong>of</strong> Education or one <strong>of</strong> the Provincial Education Departments in the Republic <strong>of</strong> <strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong>, must<br />

have passed two <strong>of</strong> the <strong>of</strong>ficial languages, with at least 40% in at least one <strong>of</strong> them as First Language Higher Grade. (An immigrant who has not satisfied these<br />

requirements, will be required to do so during his/her period <strong>of</strong> training for the degree) and have obtained at least 40% on Higher Grade in another subject (languages<br />

excluded).<br />

SCHOOL SUBJECTS<br />

These are academic subjects that have to be taken and relates to subjects being <strong>of</strong>fered in schools. Students are advised to take THREE <strong>of</strong> the approved school<br />

subjects for this phase at a 2-2-1 (second year, second year, first year) level or a 3-1-1 (third year, first year, first year) level. This should include the two <strong>of</strong>ficial<br />

languages.<br />

OFFICIAL LANGUAGES<br />

as part <strong>of</strong> the BEd degree students are compelled to take TWO <strong>of</strong> the following <strong>of</strong>ficial languages.<br />

English, Afrikaans, isiZulu, Sepedi, Sign language, Sesotho, siSwati, Xitsonga, Setswana, Tshivenda, isiXhosa.<br />

One <strong>of</strong> the languages may be taken at a pr<strong>of</strong>iciency level (Practical or Beginner’s level). See the relevant languages in the “my Modules” brochure that may be taken.<br />

Sign Language is intended for deaf students or students with <strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong>n Sign Language as first language who wish to prepare themselves to educate deaf learners.<br />

Sign Language is not <strong>of</strong>fered at UNISA. Students may take it at any other <strong>University</strong> and after completion apply for recognition.<br />

Foreign students (with a foreign passport): the requirement <strong>of</strong> a second language does not apply and can be replaced with a language from the country <strong>of</strong> origin <strong>of</strong><br />

A student who has successfully passed the Degree <strong>of</strong> Bachelor Education – BEd (Intermediate and Senior Phase) will be able to teach Grades 4 to 9). Please avail<br />

yourself – prior to registration – <strong>of</strong> the practical teaching requirements. <strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong>n students intending to study outside <strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong> and applicants from overseas<br />

must do Teaching Practice in <strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong>n schools so that they are visited, observed and supported by the assigned UNISA Academic/ Teaching staff.<br />

Declaration Form ,(DSAR05) is available from UNISA Admissions and Registrations to be completed for this purpose. If the Declaration Form is not completed and<br />

signed, the student may not be admitted and /or registered.<br />

Sign Language is intended for deaf students or students with <strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong>n Sign Language as first language who wish to prepare themselves to educate deaf learners.<br />

Sign Language is not <strong>of</strong>fered at UNISA. Students may take it at any other <strong>University</strong> and after completion apply for recognition.<br />

Foreign students (with a foreign passport): the requirement <strong>of</strong> a second language does not apply and can be replaced with a language from the country <strong>of</strong> origin <strong>of</strong><br />

A student who has successfully completed this qualification will be able to teach Grades 10 to 12. Please avail yourself – prior to registration – <strong>of</strong> the practical teacing<br />

requirements. <strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong>n Students intending to study outside <strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong> and applicants from overseas must do Teaching Practice in <strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong>n schools so<br />

that they are visited, observed and supported by assigned UNISA Academic/ Teaching staff.<br />

school development through environmental education) to complete the degree. Only a limited number <strong>of</strong> students can be accepted each year. Students must have<br />

the opportunity in their work situation to do the practical work. A student must attend practical training for five days in Pretoria during the year <strong>of</strong> specialisation, i.e.<br />

the year in which modules HBEDBLV & HBEDETE are <strong>of</strong>fered. Students must apply before 15 November <strong>of</strong> their first year <strong>of</strong> study for selection on the prescribed<br />

Only a limited number <strong>of</strong> students will be admitted annually to the studies for the degree. Students who are provisionally selected must appear before a selection<br />

committee in Pretoria.<br />

Practical training, which is compulsory, is <strong>of</strong>fered in Pretoria. It takes place over 5 weeks, from Monday till Saturday and, in addition, longer sessions <strong>of</strong> up to ten days<br />

each will be conducted during March, May, August and September.<br />

Education III is not recognised by the Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Board for Psychology for purposes <strong>of</strong> registration as a psychometrist and consequently a student who was admitted<br />

to the studies for the degree <strong>of</strong> Hons BEd (Specialisation in School Guidance and Counselling) by virtue <strong>of</strong>, inter alia, Education III, may not, on completion <strong>of</strong> this<br />

degree, register for the degree <strong>of</strong> Master <strong>of</strong> Education – with Specialisation in Guidance and Counselling.<br />
