CALL: <strong>Liv<strong>in</strong>g</strong> God’s Reign <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Midst</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Empire</strong><br />

In mak<strong>in</strong>g our confession, we seek to be a responsive and transformed people <strong>of</strong> faith, hope, and<br />

love. God calls us to fresh discernment about <strong>the</strong> shape <strong>of</strong> our mission and m<strong>in</strong>istry <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> imperial<br />

context <strong>of</strong> our time. This is a critical kairos time for <strong>the</strong> church. We must sharpen our attentiveness to<br />

God’s call to us, as <strong>in</strong>dividuals, families, congregations/pastoral charges, mission units, presbyteries/<br />

districts, Conferences, and General Council. We seek to be <strong>in</strong> solidarity with God’s mission <strong>in</strong> and<br />

for this world that God created and loves, and for <strong>the</strong> creatures <strong>of</strong> all k<strong>in</strong>ds who have life and breath<br />

from God’s life and breath. This section <strong>of</strong> our report, without presum<strong>in</strong>g to speak for all with<strong>in</strong> this<br />

diverse church <strong>of</strong> ours, seeks to express h<strong>in</strong>ts and glimpses <strong>of</strong> what that solidarity might look like <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> midst <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> destructive imperial forces <strong>of</strong> our day.<br />

Discernment is an ongo<strong>in</strong>g tradition for those <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> church. Fortunately, we have sources <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>spiration to guide us <strong>in</strong> this new context. For <strong>in</strong>stance, our Affirmation <strong>of</strong> Faith, “A New Creed,”<br />

rem<strong>in</strong>ds us that we are called by <strong>the</strong> God we trust “to be <strong>the</strong> <strong>Church</strong>: to celebrate God’s presence, to<br />

live with respect <strong>in</strong> Creation, to love and serve o<strong>the</strong>rs, to seek justice and resist evil, to proclaim Jesus,<br />

crucified and risen, our judge and our hope.” And we know “God is with us. We are not alone.”<br />

But such faith is <strong>in</strong> danger <strong>of</strong> becom<strong>in</strong>g noth<strong>in</strong>g more than pious words if it is separated from <strong>the</strong><br />

nitty-gritty <strong>of</strong> worldly engagements and entanglements. To move from confession to call is to move<br />

from <strong>the</strong> ideas, <strong>in</strong>tentions, and actions that we resist as s<strong>in</strong>ful, to those ideas, <strong>in</strong>tentions, and actions<br />

to which God leads us. We seek a shift with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> broad life <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> church from a primary concern<br />

about preservation and ma<strong>in</strong>tenance toward a fresh vocation <strong>of</strong> vision, mission engagement, justice<br />

seek<strong>in</strong>g, and transformative m<strong>in</strong>istry.<br />

<strong>The</strong> 39th General Council 2006 <strong>of</strong>fers significant time for discernment about our just-beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g<br />

third generation <strong>of</strong> mission and m<strong>in</strong>istry. Once aga<strong>in</strong>, <strong>the</strong> draft Statement <strong>of</strong> Faith <strong>of</strong>fers po<strong>in</strong>ts<br />

<strong>of</strong> convergence, as it states: “With God’s help we turn from our s<strong>in</strong> and seek to be agents <strong>of</strong> God’s<br />

heal<strong>in</strong>g and reconciliation....We choose to listen to our neighbours <strong>in</strong> faith...to work toge<strong>the</strong>r for<br />

a whole earth <strong>of</strong> peace and justice. We participate <strong>in</strong> God’s work <strong>of</strong> heal<strong>in</strong>g and mend<strong>in</strong>g creation<br />

expressed <strong>in</strong> both personal and communal dimensions.”<br />

Becom<strong>in</strong>g more specific, <strong>the</strong> statement says: “Christian communal responsibility <strong>in</strong> our day especially<br />

<strong>in</strong>cludes: attend<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> well-be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> our home <strong>the</strong> earth; repent<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> European-Canadian<br />

hostility toward Aborig<strong>in</strong>al peoples; resist<strong>in</strong>g economic exploitation, <strong>the</strong> idolatry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> market<br />

economy, and <strong>the</strong> marg<strong>in</strong>alization <strong>of</strong> people because <strong>of</strong> gender, ethnicity, or sexuality; challeng<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

misuse <strong>of</strong> Christian language to promote hatred ra<strong>the</strong>r than love, and war ra<strong>the</strong>r than peace; foster<strong>in</strong>g<br />

a climate <strong>of</strong> faithful hope <strong>in</strong> opposition to a culture <strong>of</strong> covert despair; and constructively recreat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

our identity and role <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> community <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> earth.” While this is an exceed<strong>in</strong>gly difficult, if not<br />

impossible, vocation for us as <strong>in</strong>dividuals, it is far less difficult as people <strong>of</strong> various gifts with<strong>in</strong> diverse<br />

communities <strong>of</strong> faith, at all levels <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> church, and among people <strong>of</strong> conscience everywhere.<br />

Inkl<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>of</strong> God’s contemporary call to <strong>the</strong> church have been discerned here and <strong>the</strong>re, among diverse<br />

people <strong>of</strong> faith <strong>in</strong> various contexts. <strong>The</strong> <strong>United</strong> <strong>Church</strong> has a rich history <strong>of</strong> prophetic and pastoral<br />

<strong>in</strong>volvement, and has over <strong>the</strong> last few decades addressed numerous specific issues <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>justice,<br />

exploitation, and greed. None<strong>the</strong>less, far too few <strong>of</strong> us have transformed our habits and our patterns <strong>of</strong><br />

behaviour. Ra<strong>the</strong>r, we have conformed ourselves more to imperial practices <strong>of</strong> efficiency and success,<br />

ra<strong>the</strong>r than to <strong>the</strong> radical, alternative, and anti-imperial gospel <strong>of</strong> good news, which has unselfish love at<br />

its heart. Among a host <strong>of</strong> potential actions we may consider, it is time to revisit, <strong>in</strong> a systematic fashion,<br />

<strong>the</strong> practical implications for our future church, at all levels, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> various resolutions and petitions that<br />
