FRIENDS<br />

The <strong>United</strong> <strong>Board</strong> draws strength from the many<br />

<strong>in</strong>dividuals who support its work. Their generosity<br />

takes many <strong>for</strong>ms – a f<strong>in</strong>ancial contribution, shar<strong>in</strong>g<br />

expertise, offer<strong>in</strong>g time or hospitality – and may be<br />

directed to general support of the <strong>United</strong> <strong>Board</strong>, a<br />

specific <strong>United</strong> <strong>Board</strong> program or a <strong>United</strong> <strong>Board</strong>approved<br />

program at a partner <strong>in</strong>stitution. They<br />

often are <strong>in</strong>spired to give because of their own<br />

experiences at <strong>Asia</strong>n colleges and universities or<br />

because of personal encounters with <strong>Asia</strong>n educators<br />

and students.<br />

Carmen D. Dagn<strong>in</strong>o<br />

“I have always been a people person,” reflects <strong>for</strong>mer<br />

<strong>United</strong> <strong>Board</strong> program associate Carmen Dagn<strong>in</strong>o. “I<br />

love meet<strong>in</strong>g people from other cultures and learn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

from them.” Dur<strong>in</strong>g the 25 years she worked at the<br />

<strong>United</strong> <strong>Board</strong> (1979-2005), Mrs. Dagn<strong>in</strong>o <strong>for</strong>ged<br />

last<strong>in</strong>g friendships with many <strong>Asia</strong>n scholars, and<br />

“even though we were from different cultures, we<br />

found a deep rapport with each other, based on<br />

respect and car<strong>in</strong>g.”<br />

The Visit<strong>in</strong>g Scholars Program, which brought<br />

professors from <strong>United</strong> <strong>Board</strong>-related colleges<br />

and universities to the <strong>United</strong> States <strong>for</strong> one-year<br />
