Is Paris Burning? 235-1
Puranuiuiit >li(iu:ii I'i .'Minutes Kol. Nov. '66 Roadshow
With Its strong documentary flavor, interspersed wnth
dramatic and human interest touches, this Paul Graetz
production for Paramount-Seven Arts, based on the best-
.sellini; novel of the liberation of Paris by Larry Collins
and Dominique Lapierre. was entirely filmed in Prance,
much of It on actual Paris street locations, and thus has
intense realism and action. With a cast of 16 stars, several
of them lop Hollywood names, the pictiue has a great
want-to-see potential and should do excellent business
in its road.show dates and, later, in general situations.
PhotOKraphed in black-and-white, which gives far greater
authenticity to the superb camerawork by Marcel Grignon.
who received the utmost cooperation of the city officials
and the French government in clearing the ordinarily-crowded
Paris streets. Only a few actual newsreel
shots, including one of De Gaulle entering recaptiu-ed
Paris, have been worked into the climactic action. Well
directed by Rene Clement, from a taut screenplay by
America's Gore 'Vidal and foiu- French authors. Of the
score of international stars, Germany's Gert Fiobe and
Orson Welles are authoritative in key portrayals but
many others have bit or "cameo" roles.
Sequels rarely live up to the originals
and this followup
to "Dr. Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine" is an incredibly
corny and utterly nonsensical spy spoof which
must depend on the boxoffice draw of Vincent Pi'ice. the
original Di'. Goldfoot. and. for the teenagers. Fabian, who
plays a straight role minus singing. The fast-and-furious
action will entertain the younger set. Produced in Italy
by Fulvio Lucisano from a screenplay by Louis M. Heyward
and Robert Kaufman, and directed by Mario Bava
who permits Pi'ice to ham it up to his heart's content.
The wild chases in and around Rome's public monuments
and wide highways, all well photographed in Technicolor,
are hilarious in addition to being pleasing to the eye.
Fabian carries on a romance of sorts with attractive
Laura Antonelli. Susan Hart is seen in the opening flashback
to the earlier "Goldfoot" film and a bevy of scantily
clad maidens also appear. Musical score is by Les
Baxter.
