Bulk Solids
Center for Chemical Process Safety
This book is intended to be a resource for
process design and plant engineers who are
responsible for designing and running
processes handling powders.
The main focus of the book is on the
instability, reactivity and combustibility
hazards of particulate solids manufactured
Toxicity hazards are also discussed.796 pp.
Processing of
Particulate Solids
J.P.K. Seville, U. Tüzün and R. Clift
‘Particle Tech nol ogy’ is a new sub ject
facing new challenges. Chemical and
process engineering is becoming less
concerned with the design of plans to
produce generic simple chemicals
(which are often single phase fluids) and
is now more concerned with speciality
‘effect’ chemicals which may often be in particulate form.
Chemical and process engineers are also being recruited in
increasing numbers into areas outside their traditional fields,
such as the food industry, pharmaceuticals and the
manufacture of a wide variety of consumer products. This
book has been written to meet their needs. 372 pp.
Powder and Bulk Engineering, 2011-2012 Corporate Capabilities 5
Aerocon
Corporate Description
Aerocon was formed as the mechanical
conveyor division of VAC-U-MAX to
capitalize on the need for a quiet, dust free,
gentle and simple means of mechanically
conveying dry bulk materials using the de -
vel oping technique of Aero-Conveying.
Building upon 40 years of powder handling
technology, with the combined experiences
of Aerocon employees, we have developed a
new, cleaner and more efficient range of
conveyors that more closely reflects the
market’s demand for a multiplane,
multiple-inlet, filterless conveying system.
Markets Served
Aerocon mechanical conveyors are sold
throughout the world. The result of aeroconveying
is high volume, controlled
transfer of dry materials such as chemical
products, foods, and pharmaceuticals
efficiently and economically, with little if
any effect on the material, however friable
and degradable.
Technical Services
As with many aspects of powder processing,
a good product or concept is not sufficient
to guarantee a successful appli cation.
Equally important is the ability to apply
that knowledge. In Aero-Conveying, much
of the industry had looked upon the
conveyor as a straight line, point-to-point,
single-speed machine. Aerocon was
responsible for changing that view.
Application of the technique is now more
important and consequently, so is product
testing. VAC-U-MAX has extensive
experience and a state-of-the-art test lab that
is equipped with a full range of Aero-
Conveyors. Aerocon has full access to this
facility and to the extensive engineering
department with its CAD equipment. Add
to this a modern manufacturing facility that
includes dairy standard production and the
Aerocon facilities become some of the best
available on the market today. Aerocon has
access to 85 employees covering all aspects
of the powder handling business.
Major Products
The MKII Aero-Conveyor, which is
manufactured in the USA, covers a wider
range of applications, including 90° corners
and long radius sweep bend versions. In
addition, the developments of Aero-
Conveying that resulted in the three phases
of conveying have now been incorporated
into Aerocon.
The addition of a unique and awardwinning
Bulk Bag Unloader unit, allpurpose
Bag Dump Station, and in-house
control panel manufacturing capabilities
enables us to provide turnkey systems that
meet the needs of today’s demanding
marketplace.
Great Western Manufacturing
Corporate Description
Great Western Manufacturing
Company has been engineering a
complete line of sifting and screening
equipment for more than a century.
Our screeners are used for scalping,
grading and fines removal from dry, free
flowing powders and granular materials
and are renowned for their highly
reliable drives, dependable operation
and quality craftsmanship.
Markets Served
Great Western serves chemical, plastics,
and mineral industries in addition to
cereal grain processors, mix plants,
bakeries and snack food producers, spice
processors, and the pet food industry.
Technologies
Each screener is engineered for the
customer's specific application and
utilizes the gentle gyratory sifting motion
which reduces product degradation.
Many options are available that allow the
screeners to be customized to meet
specific needs.
Our In-Line pressure sifter/screeners are
uniquely engineered to work under
pressure. The QA Series of In-Line
screeners is engineered and
manufactured with a high level of
sanitation in mind, as well as ease of
maintenance using light weight
components, and form fitting, snap-on
neoprene gaskets.
Because we put the priority in sifting,
our In-Line sifters incorporate the
features engineers, sanitarians,
maintenance personnel and operators
have come to expect in any reliable
gravity flow sifter: accessibility,
maintainability, and reliability.
Like all Great Western sifters, our new
QA line of quality assurance gravity flow
sifters operate with a horizontal gyratory
sifting motion that is recognized for its
superior performance and precision
separations. Using multiple stacked
sieves, large amounts of sifting surface
can be obtained while using a minimum
of floor space. Multiple separations can
be achieved with the amount of sieve
area for each separation accurately
allocated according to product
requirements.
Technical Services
Great Western maintains a
comprehensive testing laboratory to
evaluate product samples in order to
determine how a product handles and
what difficulties might be encountered
due to particle size distribution, particle
shape, bulk density, moisture and oil
content, and the possibility of static
charge. Recommendations can be made
regarding optimum equipment size and
specifications for sifter speed and circle,
sieve depth, throat size, side opening,
pan slope, and the number and type of
cloth cleaners to meet process
objectives.
Saint-Gobain, Unilever, Kraft Foods,
Michelin, Dow, Nestle, Walgreens,
Frankfurt Airport and the United States
Postal Service.
Markets Served
NERAK provides sales, service and
consultation to a wide range of clients
and industries throughout the world:
airports, postal sorting, building
materials, pharmaceutical, food
processing, packaging and shipping,
appliances and warehouse operations.
Key geographical market areas are the
United States, Canada, Mexico, Central
America and the Philippines.
Facilities
NERAK in New York designs and
builds all conveyors for its market area
Technology
One of NERAK’s most respected
technologies is the NERAK rubber
block chain, part of every conveyor and
rubber molded around high-tensile steel
cables, making it extremely strong and
virtually maintenance-free. It does not
require lubrication and is highly
corrosion and stretch-resistant. Because
of its unique design, it provides a
marked reduction in noise compared
with traditional chain drives.
All rubber block chains can be supplied
with vulcanized endless connections,
hinged connections or without
connections. The chains are
manufactured at NERAK’s Salzwedel,
Germany, plant.
Major Products
NERAK’s primary products are bucket
elevators and vertical conveyors.
Incorporating single or multiple feed
points, bucket elevators accommodate
all grades of product from delicate
pharmaceuticals to heavy sand and
gravel. Both continuous bucket and
pendulum bucket systems are built to
customer specifications.
A variety of different types of vertical
conveyors are high-speed and highcapacity,
custom-designed to handle
everything from boxes and containers to
luggage and pallets. NERAK builds
each system to perfectly match the space
requirements and production capacities
of the buyer.
Other major products include
circulating and reciprocating conveyors,
cooling lines and grid belt conveyors,
and special-purpose machinery and
percentage of fine particles compared to the
percentage available is very low, mainly
because of poor seal design. The patented
Guidelines for Safe
Handling of Powders and
Bulk Solids
Center for Chemical Process Safety
This book is intended to be a resource for
process design and plant engineers who are
responsible for designing and running
processes handling powders.
The main focus of the book is on the
instability, reactivity and combustibility
hazards of particulate solids manufactured
or handled in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries.
Toxicity hazards are also discussed.796 pp.
Processing of
Particulate Solids
J.P.K. Seville, U. Tüzün and R. Clift
‘Particle Tech nol ogy’ is a new sub ject
facing new challenges. Chemical and
process engineering is becoming less
concerned with the design of plans to
produce generic simple chemicals
(which are often single phase fluids) and
is now more concerned with speciality
‘effect’ chemicals which may often be in particulate form.
Chemical and process engineers are also being recruited in
increasing numbers into areas outside their traditional fields,
such as the food industry, pharmaceuticals and the
manufacture of a wide variety of consumer products. This
book has been written to meet their needs. 372 pp.
Dust Explosions in the
Process Industries,
Rolf K. Eckhoff
Any plant can be at risk for dust
explosions. This book shows how to create
a safe operating environment and prevent
such catastrophes. It thoroughly examines
the nature of dust explosions, sources of
ignition, means of propagation, and
techniques to prevent, contain, and dampen
them. Includes case histories and material
ignitability/explosivity data. 719 pages.
Handbook of Industrial
Drying 3rd Edition
Part I covers the basic principles,
definitions, and process calculations of
drying. Part II is devoted to chapters that
describe and discuss the more commonly
used industrial dryers, including flash,
spray, rotary, fluidized bed, drum, freeze, microwave,
conveyor, horizontal vacuum, and more. Part III covers
current drying practices in key industrial sectors in which
drying is a significant, if not necessarily dominant,
operation. Part IV includes feeder systems, safety, controls,
and more. 1281 pp.
MECHANICAL CONVEYORS FOR
BULK SOLIDS
h. Colijn
Cut
Cut Your Cost 9 Ways with
One Ultra-Economical Conveyor
installation cost
Easy conveyor routing
at any angle (over, under
or around obstructions,
through small holes
in walls or ceilings)
conforms to process
layouts, drastically
cutting installation
costs, while consuming
minimal floor space.
2
Slash
initial cost
Flexicon conveyors
cost far less than
drag chain conveyors,
bucket elevators,
pneumatic conveying
systems and other
conveyors of equivalent
capacity, both initially
and in operation.
3
Save
on maintenance
Rugged inner screw is
the only moving part
contacting material
(no internal bearings)
yielding ultra-high
reliability with little
maintenance cost
or downtime.
4
Use
less energy
Low horsepower motors,
simple gear reducers
and ultra-efficient
operation significantly
cut energy cost per
volume of material
conveyed.
5
Convey
at multiple
locations
Available mounted
on mobile bases
with casters, Flexicon
conveyors with hoppers,
dust collectors and other
accessories can operate
at multiple locations,
eliminating the need
for dedicated conveyors.
6
Save
on sanitary
construction
Other conveyors
can command
high premiums for
food, 3-A dairy and
pharmaceutical models,
but Flexicon conveyors
can meet sanitary
requirements at
comparatively low cost.
7
End
costly
contamination
Enclosed tube prevents
dust and spillage,
eliminating cost and
quality concerns
associated with
contamination of
your product and
plant environment.
See why thousands
of engineers like you
have purchased more
Flexicon conveyors
than all competitive
designs combined.
8
Reduce
cleaning costs
Removable end cap
allows reversing of
screw for evacuation
of material, in-place
flushing of crevicefree
interior, or quick
removal of screw for
sanitizing—all with
minimal labor or
downtime.
9
Convey
disparate
materials
Handle sub-micron
powders to large pellets
including non-free-flowing
products that pack,
cake, seize, fluidize,
abrade or smear, with
no separation of blends,
often eliminating the
need for multiple units.
