Rotation<br />

Physical Pendula<br />

This set of six objects is perfect for studying Physical<br />

Pendula, Moments of Inertia, and the Parallel Axis<br />

Theorem. Each piece fastens directly to a Rotary Motion<br />

Sensor to measure the objects acceleration due to an<br />

applied torque, or the period when the pendulum freely<br />

oscillates.<br />

Each piece is made from 1/4 inch thick aluminum plate.<br />

Apply a known torque and measure the angular acceleration<br />

to calculate the moment of inertia of the object.<br />

Multiple holes in the plate allow investigation of the<br />

Parallel Axis Theorem.<br />

The Pendulum Bar has holes spaced<br />

at 2 cm intervals. A graph of<br />

oscillation period vs. pivot hole<br />

position shows that there is a<br />

unique placement that gives a<br />

minimum period. This location<br />

can be verified using calculus.<br />

Moments of Inertia<br />

Add the Mini-Rotational Accessory to the Rotary Motion Sensor<br />

(pages 2 and 5) to study Moments of Inertia of an aluminum<br />

disk, a steel ring and a metal rod. Additional experiments<br />

can be performed using the same apparatus: The period of a<br />

physical pendulum and conservation of angular momentum<br />

when a ring is dropped on a rotating disk.<br />
