Message from the Chair
It was a busy spring semester at UK with the postgraduate conference and groundbreaking
ceremony for the new pharmacy building. But it hasn’t seemed to slow down much now that it’s
summertime.
We currently have 18 students participating in the Pharmaceutical Sciences Undergraduate Summer
Research Program. The students are spending 10 weeks on campus being mentored by our faculty.
In addition, we’re already planning for the fall as UK and AAPS will co-host the International
Microencapsulation Conference bringing hundreds of scientists to Lexington. And we’re also
preparing for a great new group of graduate students to arrive. In August, we’ll welcome 15 new
students to the graduate program -- nine in the traditional pharmaceutical sciences track; five in the
clinical and experimental therapeutics track; and our first student will be enrolled in the new
pharmaceutical policy track.
I hope you are having a great summer and please don’t forget our interest in sharing your alumni
news.
Sincerely,
Patrick McNamara, Ph.D.
UK Researchers Find New Class of Nontoxic Cancer Treatments
A new class of compounds developed by University of Kentucky researchers shows promise as a
nontoxic treatment of some cancers previously treated with toxic chemotherapy. In a study published
in the April 30 issue of the academic journal Chemistry & Biology, UK pharmaceutical sciences
graduate student Abby Ho mentored by assistant professor Kyung-Bo Kim and ophthalmology and
visual sciences assistant professor Royce Mohan describe a compound that acts directly on LMP2, a
component of the immune proteasome variant that has been identified abundantly expressed in
certain types of tumors, including some prostate cancers. READ MORE
Organic Solid State Chemistry Symposium Hosted by UK
The Midwest Organic Solid State Chemistry Symposium (MOSSC) was held for the first time in
Lexington on June 8-9. Conference chairs for the event were Tonglei Li, Ph.D., assistant professor
in the UK Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Carol Brock, Ph.D., professor, in the UK
Department of Chemistry. More than 40 participants from 10 institutions attended the event.
MOSSCS provides opportunities to exchange ideas and research results pertaining to the organic
solid state in an informal atmosphere with an emphasis on presentations by graduate students and
postdoctoral associates. Invited lecturers and reports of research on organic materials dealing with
crystal engineering, mixed crystals, polymorphism, solid state synthesis and reactivity, host-guest
chemistry, crystal growth, optical behavior, transport properties, pharmaceuticals, molecular
recognition, critical behavior and related properties all are commonly presented at the MOSSC
Symposium. For more information, contact Dr. Li at Tonglei@uky.edu.
Postdoctoral Profile: Brett Jones
Brett Jones, Ph.D., is a postdoctoral scholar in the UK Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences with
Penni Black, Ph.D, assistant professor. His research involves analyzing the expression of various
members of the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling pathway in non-small cell lung
cancer cell lines.
Jones is a native of Adelaide, Australia, and graduated in 1994 with a bachelor’s degree in
microbiology and biomedicine from The Flinders University of South Australia, and a bachelor’s
degree in developmental biology in 1996, also from Flinders University. In May 1996, he joined the
graduate program at the School of Pharmacy and Medical Sciences at The University of South
Australia. His research project, entitled, “The molecular characterization of xenobiotic-metabolising
enzymes in Australian marsupials,” provided the first available information on the identification and
relative expression of the cytochrome P450 and UDP-glucuronosyltransferase enzyme families in
several adult and neonatal Australian marsupial species. His thesis work concluded with the
successful cloning of two cytochrome P450 CYP2C cDNA sequences from the Koala (Phascolarctos
cinereus), designated CYP2C47 and CYP2C48. The sequences represented the first two CYP450
cDNAs to be cloned for any Australian marsupial species. Prior to joining Dr Black’s lab, Jones
completed an initial postdoctoral fellowship in the UK Graduate Center for Toxicology with Professor
Mary Vore.
Ph.D. Program Helps Build UK Legacy Tradition
In the fall of 1981, when Joe Fleishaker was a senior in the pharmacy program at Duquesne
University in Pittsburgh, he came to Lexington to visit the University of Kentucky while checking out
graduate programs. At the time, he had no way of knowing the lifelong connection he'd have with UK
and the Bluegrass. READ MORE
Freeman Receives Miles Award for Community Service
It was seven years ago when UK College of Pharmacy faculty member Dr. Patricia Rippetoe
Freeman (B.S, 1987, Ph.D., 1991) learned two of her children were gradually losing their hearing.
Utilizing her instincts not only as a mother, but one with a Ph.D., she did what she knew best –
research. Her investigation began to learn as much as she could to help her young sons, Kenneth
and Edward. READ MORE
