Message from the Chair<br />

It was a busy spring semester at UK with the postgraduate conference and groundbreaking<br />

ceremony for the new pharmacy building. But it hasn’t seemed to slow down much now that it’s<br />

summertime.<br />

We currently have 18 students participating in the Pharmaceutical Sciences Undergraduate <strong>Summer</strong><br />

Research Program. The students are spending 10 weeks on campus being mentored by our faculty.<br />

In addition, we’re already planning for the fall as UK and AAPS will co-host the International<br />

Microencapsulation Conference bringing hundreds <strong>of</strong> scientists to Lexington. And we’re also<br />

preparing for a great new group <strong>of</strong> graduate students to arrive. In August, we’ll welcome 15 new<br />

students to the graduate program -- nine in the traditional pharmaceutical sciences track; five in the<br />

clinical and experimental therapeutics track; and our first student will be enrolled in the new<br />

pharmaceutical policy track.<br />

I hope you are having a great summer and please don’t forget our interest in sharing your alumni<br />

The <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Kentucky</strong> <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Pharmacy</strong> marked a significant milestone in the history and<br />

future <strong>of</strong> the <strong>College</strong> on April 13, as <strong>University</strong> and <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficials held a ceremonial<br />

groundbreaking for a new 286,000 square-foot state-<strong>of</strong>-the art academic and research building.<br />

Hussain, Brouwer Honored as Outstanding UK Pharmaceutical<br />

Sciences Alumni<br />

Kim Brouwer, Ph.D., and Munir Hussain, Ph.D., both 1983 UK graduates, were presented the<br />

inaugural Outstanding UK Pharmaceutical Sciences Alumni Award during a banquet April 20, held in<br />

conjunction with the UK Pharmaceutical Sciences Postgraduate Conference. READ MORE<br />

UK Researchers Find New Class <strong>of</strong> Nontoxic Cancer Treatments<br />

A new class <strong>of</strong> compounds developed by <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Kentucky</strong> researchers shows promise as a<br />

nontoxic treatment <strong>of</strong> some cancers previously treated with toxic chemotherapy. In a study published<br />

in the April 30 issue <strong>of</strong> the academic journal Chemistry & Biology, UK pharmaceutical sciences<br />

graduate student Abby Ho mentored by assistant pr<strong>of</strong>essor Kyung-Bo Kim and ophthalmology and<br />

visual sciences assistant pr<strong>of</strong>essor Royce Mohan describe a compound that acts directly on LMP2, a<br />

component <strong>of</strong> the immune proteasome variant that has been identified abundantly expressed in<br />

certain types <strong>of</strong> tumors, including some prostate cancers. READ MORE<br />

Organic Solid State Chemistry Symposium Hosted by UK<br />

The Midwest Organic Solid State Chemistry Symposium (MOSSC) was held for the first time in<br />

Lexington on June 8-9. Conference chairs for the event were Tonglei Li, Ph.D., assistant pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />

in the UK Department <strong>of</strong> Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Carol Brock, Ph.D., pr<strong>of</strong>essor, in the UK<br />

Department <strong>of</strong> Chemistry. More than 40 participants from 10 institutions attended the event.<br />

MOSSCS provides opportunities to exchange ideas and research results pertaining to the organic<br />

solid state in an informal atmosphere with an emphasis on presentations by graduate students and<br />

postdoctoral associates. Invited lecturers and reports <strong>of</strong> research on organic materials dealing with<br />

crystal engineering, mixed crystals, polymorphism, solid state synthesis and reactivity, host-guest<br />

chemistry, crystal growth, optical behavior, transport properties, pharmaceuticals, molecular<br />

recognition, critical behavior and related properties all are commonly presented at the MOSSC<br />

Pharmaceutical scientists from around the world will be traveling to Lexington in September for the<br />

16th International Symposium on Microencapsulation. The biennial event set for Sept. 9-12 was last<br />

held in the U.S. in 1995. It is co-sponsored by the American Association <strong>of</strong> Pharmaceutical Scientists<br />

(AAPS) and the UK <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Pharmacy</strong>. READ MORE<br />

Jay Attends Nano Conference in Beijing<br />

Michael Jay, Ph.D., pr<strong>of</strong>essor, attended the ChinaNANO<strong>2007</strong>, the International Conference on<br />

Nanoscience and Technology, held June 4-6, in Beijing, China. He presented, “Dexamethasone<br />

Palmitate Nanoparticles Prepared by Nanotemplate,” during the Nanobiology and Nanomedicine<br />

Postdoctoral Pr<strong>of</strong>ile: Brett Jones<br />

Brett Jones, Ph.D., is a postdoctoral scholar in the UK Department <strong>of</strong> Pharmaceutical Sciences with<br />

Penni Black, Ph.D, assistant pr<strong>of</strong>essor. His research involves analyzing the expression <strong>of</strong> various<br />

members <strong>of</strong> the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling pathway in non-small cell lung<br />

cancer cell lines.<br />

Jones is a native <strong>of</strong> Adelaide, Australia, and graduated in 1994 with a bachelor’s degree in<br />

microbiology and biomedicine from The Flinders <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> South Australia, and a bachelor’s<br />

degree in developmental biology in 1996, also from Flinders <strong>University</strong>. In May 1996, he joined the<br />

graduate program at the School <strong>of</strong> <strong>Pharmacy</strong> and Medical Sciences at The <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> South<br />

Australia. His research project, entitled, “The molecular characterization <strong>of</strong> xenobiotic-metabolising<br />

enzymes in Australian marsupials,” provided the first available information on the identification and<br />

relative expression <strong>of</strong> the cytochrome P450 and UDP-glucuronosyltransferase enzyme families in<br />

several adult and neonatal Australian marsupial species. His thesis work concluded with the<br />

successful cloning <strong>of</strong> two cytochrome P450 CYP2C cDNA sequences from the Koala (Phascolarctos<br />

cinereus), designated CYP2C47 and CYP2C48. The sequences represented the first two CYP450<br />

cDNAs to be cloned for any Australian marsupial species. Prior to joining Dr Black’s lab, Jones<br />

completed an initial postdoctoral fellowship in the UK Graduate Center for Toxicology with Pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />

Mary Vore.<br />

Ph.D. Program Helps Build UK Legacy Tradition<br />

In the fall <strong>of</strong> 1981, when Joe Fleishaker was a senior in the pharmacy program at Duquesne<br />

<strong>University</strong> in Pittsburgh, he came to Lexington to visit the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Kentucky</strong> while checking out<br />

graduate programs. At the time, he had no way <strong>of</strong> knowing the lifelong connection he'd have with UK<br />

Four Faculty Honored with Teaching Awards

Four UK Department <strong>of</strong> Pharmaceutical Sciences faculty members have been recognized for<br />

outstanding contributions in the classroom during the past academic year.<br />

Peter Crooks, Ph.D., pr<strong>of</strong>essor, and Tonglei Li, Ph.D., assistant pr<strong>of</strong>essor, were awarded the<br />

Robert A. Blouin Excellence in Graduate Education Awards. Todd Porter, Ph.D., associate<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essor, and Paul Bummer, Ph.D., associate pr<strong>of</strong>essor, received the Robert A. Blouin Excellence<br />

in Pharmaceutical Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Education Awards. The awards honor Blouin, who served as a UK<br />

<strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Pharmacy</strong> faculty member beginning in 1978 until 2003 when he retired as the college’s<br />

associate dean for research and graduate education. He currently serves as dean at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

North Carolina School <strong>of</strong> <strong>Pharmacy</strong>.<br />

Freeman Receives Miles Award for Community Service<br />

It was seven years ago when UK <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Pharmacy</strong> faculty member Dr. Patricia Rippetoe<br />

Freeman (B.S, 1987, Ph.D., 1991) learned two <strong>of</strong> her children were gradually losing their hearing.<br />

Utilizing her instincts not only as a mother, but one with a Ph.D., she did what she knew best –<br />

research. Her investigation began to learn as much as she could to help her young sons, Kenneth<br />
