The UCLA School of Nursing is ranked as one of the
top nursing schools in the country by US News and
World Reports. Through our innovative curriculum,
students learn relevant theory, acquire practice skills
and are socialized into the profession of nursing.
Vision
The UCLA School of Nursing is a significant force in
developing nurse leaders to inspire individuals across the
lifespan to achieve health, wellness and quality of life.
Mission
The UCLA School of Nursing prepares nurses and
scholars to lead and transform nursing care in a rapidly
changing, diverse and complex healthcare environment
through academic excellence, innovative research,
superior clinical practice, strong community partnerships
and global initiatives.
Goals:
Become the global leader of innovative education
Lead cutting edge science
Lead international research
Lead the translation of knowledge into practice
Lead efforts to strengthen nursing practice globally
message
from
the dean
Dr. Courtney H. Lyder
Dean and Professor
Florence Nightingale once said that “nursing is an art and if it is to
be made an art, it requires an exclusive devotion, as hard a preparation,
as any painter’s or sculptor’s work.”
The 231 graduates here today have done just that—you have spent
your time in school devoted to the preparation and practice of the
art and science of nursing.
Not long ago, nurses relied on instinct, folk medicine, wisdom passed
down from other nurses and the directives of physicians as their
primary tools in care.
Not today. You who are graduating today have amazing tools and
technologies at your fingertips. Some of you will play a key role in the
patient care process and national health policy. Others will become
educators or lead the way in critically important clinical and laboratory
research.
And all of you have been provided with the tools to transform the
nursing vocation in ways that can make an immeasurable impact
on the nation’s health. You have been inculcated with the knowledge
to continually reimagine and redefine the discipline of nursing. This is
your duty; a covenant to lead the profession.
Graduates, today you are entering a new phase in your lives. You have
been given a most remarkable opportunity. You have answered the
call to the most noble profession. You are the next generation of nurse
leaders. Your future has been placed in good hands—your own.
Gene D. Block
Chancellor
Dear UCLA Graduate:
It is with immense pride that I congratulate you on your graduation
from UCLA.
Today, you become part of a rich Bruin legacy, and I know you
will continue to embody the excellence and optimism that have
long defined this extraordinary institution.
Through your outstanding achievements and commitment to serving
the community, you have helped make UCLA the truly remarkable
university it is today. You have pursued wide-ranging and, in many
cases, world-changing passions while excelling in a demanding
academic environment, and I am grateful for your contributions to
our campus and the broader community.
Your UCLA education has prepared you to become an innovator in
your profession and a leader in your community, and I look forward to
the many accomplishments that lie ahead of you. I am confident that,
throughout your journey, you will continue to advance UCLA’s public
mission. I hope you also will remain engaged with your fellow alumni
and the faculty and students who are poised to lead UCLA into our
second century; help us ensure that future generations of Bruins have
the same opportunities you have enjoyed.
Again, my warmest congratulations. I am honored to join your family
and friends in celebrating this wonderful occasion, and I wish you every
success and much happiness in the years ahead.
Very best wishes,
Gene D. Block
keynote
speaker
Patricia A. Grady
Dr. Patricia A. Grady was appointed Director of the National Institute of
Nursing Research (NINR) on April 3, 1995. She earned her undergraduate
degree in nursing from Georgetown University in Washington, DC.
She pursued her graduate education at the University of Maryland,
receiving a master’s degree from the School of Nursing and a doctorate
in physiology from the School of Medicine.
An internationally recognized researcher, Dr. Grady’s scientific focus has
primarily been in stroke, with emphasis on arterial stenosis and cerebral
ischemia. She was elected to the Institute of Medicine in 1999 and is a
member of several scientific organizations, including the Society for
Neuroscience, the American Academy of Nursing, and the American
Neurological Association. She is also a fellow of the American Heart
Association Stroke Council.
In 1988, Dr. Grady joined the National Institutes of Health (NIH) as an
extramural research program administrator in the National Institute of
Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) in the areas of stroke and
brain imaging. Two years later, she served on the NIH Task Force for
Medical Rehabilitation Research, which established the first long-range
research agenda for the field of medical rehabilitation research.
In 1992, she assumed the responsibilities of NINDS Assistant Director.
From 1993 to 1995, she was Deputy Director and Acting Director of
NINDS. Dr. Grady served as a charter member of the NIH Warren Grant
Magnuson Clinical Center Board of Governors.
Before coming to NIH, Dr. Grady held several academic positions
and served concurrently on the faculties of the University of Maryland
School of Medicine and School of Nursing.
Dr. Grady is a past recipient of the NIH Merit Award and received
the Public Health Service Superior Service Award for her exceptional
leadership.
Councilwoman Jan Perry
9th Council District,
City of Los Angeles
Now in her third term in office as Councilwoman of the Ninth District,
Jan Perry represents some of the most diverse and vibrant communities
in LA including Bunker Hill, Little Tokyo, and South Los Angeles.
Over the past decade, Perry has supported the development of major
redevelopment projects in Downtown Los Angeles that represents over
$15 billion in investment, over $40 million in City tax revenue, and the
creation of over 90,000 full-time jobs. From catalytic developments
like LA Live to iconic developments like Our Lady of Angeles Cathedral
to major public buildings like the new Police Administrative Building—
Perry has been at the forefront of ensuring that downtown moves
forward to meet its potential as the economic engine for the
entire region.
Perry also understands that tackling the challenges of homelessness
is an essential part of creating a healthy city for everyone. A champion
for the homeless, she has successfully kept the city’s emergency shelter
program open on a year-round basis and has been a strong advocate
for the development of affordable housing with supportive services to
house chronically homeless individuals, many that have been homeless
for decades. Additionally, she has fought to ensure that the Central
City Community, known by many as Skid Row, is treated as a true
neighborhood, defending the rights and safety of the homeless,
formerly homeless, and those in recovery. In 2008, Perry authored
city legislation to end the practice of dumping homeless individuals
in Skid Row by hospitals and other institutions.
Rose Marie Nesbit, BS ’57
Recipient, Dean’s Living Legacy
Award 2012
It was a privilege to have my childhood desire to become a nurse
fulfilled as a graduate of the fourth class of the UCLA School of
Nursing in 1957. The founding Dean, Dr. Lulu K. Wolf Hassenplug,
had a vision for transforming nursing education and professional
recognition. She reimagined the role of a well-educated nurse in
society. The education provided by the UCLA School of Nursing
enabled our class to make major contributions to nursing practice
and leadership.
Our class of 21 graduates, nicknamed “The Late Bloomers” by a
nursing instructor, has kept in contact and has reunions every several
years. On our 50th year reunion we went on a three-day cruise together.
In addition to working in Public Health in Inglewood and in private
duty at the UCLA Medical Center, I chaired both Dean Ada Lindsey’s
and Dean Marie Cowan’s Boards of Nursing Advisors. Dean Marie
Cowan successfully restarted the undergraduate nursing program
after its unfortunate cancelation. My husband and I also helped lead
the campaign to endow the Lulu K. Wolf Hassenplug Chair, the first
Endowed Chair in the UCLA School of Nursing.
Dean Courtney Lyder brings new energy to the traditions of improving
education and professional roles with his vision of Nursing Reimagined,
Nursing Redefined. The current graduates of the UCLA School of
Nursing are well prepared to lead the profession.
It is with humility and grateful appreciation that I thank Dr. Courtney
Lyder for this honor.

Commencement pageantry is greatly enhanced by the wearing
of academic attire or regalia. By wearing the festive colors and
traditional dress of graduates from around the world, they join the
ranks of those through history who have sought excellence through
education and the fraternity of academic degree-holders.
As the faculty and students walk down the aisles, they will be
wearing a variety of regalia—the faculty wearing the distinctive
caps and gowns from their institutions of higher learning from
around the world and the students wearing the attire of UCLA.
Gold braids (also known as fourrageres) on the shoulders signify
scholastic achievement. The purple cord draped around the neck
designates membership in the International Nursing Honor Society—
Sigma Theta Tau. Hoods are worn by Master’s and Doctoral Students.
The candidate for each degree wears a different tassel—Bachelor of
Science candidates wear apricot, master’s degree candidates wear
black and doctoral candidates wear gold.
Pictured at right is the University of California Doctoral Regalia.
