Never to be Forgotten
In late June of this
year many members of
the CCA community
attended a funeral
mass at Our Lady of
Assumption Church in
Osterville to celebrate
the life of Siobhan Leigh
Kinlin, who took her
own life on June 19 at
the age of 26 after a long
and courageous battle
with clinical depression.
We dedicate this issue of
the Alumni Commons
to Siobhan as a way for
all of us to keep her
close to our hearts,
to keep her family in
our thoughts, and to
remember her for her
intelligence, perseverance,
grace, humility,
warmth, kindness,
dedication and commitment
to the welfare of
those less fortunate than
she, love of her family,
and friendship to so
many.
More than two
thousand people
attended the wake, the
crowd at the funeral
mass could not fit in
the church, and many
attended a reception
at the Kinlins’ home
afterwards. I reflected
not only on the large
number of people —
from CCA, from
greater Cape Cod, from
Boston College, from
Nativity Prep in Jamaica
Plain where Siobhan
taught—but on how,
even in death, Siobhan
had brought so many of
us together and caused
us to think about what
is truly important in our
lives and in the lives of
others. Talking with
CCA alums and parents
I had not seen for years
was an uplifting experience
even under such
tragic circumstances,
and helped all of us remember
so many posi-
tive, productive, even
inspirational moments
that involved Siobhan,
her family, classmates,
and friends.
Siobhan was an outstanding
student at
CCA, and elsewhere in
this issue are some
thoughts and reminiscences
from some of
her teachers. She was
in my Philosophy class
her senior year, a class I
looked forward to every
day. Whether we were
talking about Plato’s
depiction of the
human condition in the
Allegory of the Cave,
one of St. Thomas
Aquinas’ proofs of
God’s existence, or
Thomas Hobbes’
concept of the State of
Nature, Siobhan was
interested, engaged, and
wanted to know more.
She stretched me as a
teacher and herself and

classmates as students
through her intellectual
curiosity and willingness
to offer her thoughts and
ideas for public consumption
in a classroom
setting. Where some
students feel in some
way intellectually exposed
when testing the classroom
waters with an idea,
Siobhan seemed exhilarated.
I enjoyed reading
Siobhan’s thoughtful, wellcrafted
essays and often
interjected a question or
comment in the margin.
She always responded,
sparking a classroom
discussion in a new,
productive direction.
Siobhan went on to
graduate magna cum
laude from Boston
College, clearly continuing
her dedication to and love
of learning.
Consistent with her
interest in serving others,
after college Siobhan
began teaching at Nativity
Prep, a school for disadvantaged
middle school
boys in Jamaica Plain.
Quite a few of her
students and colleagues
attended her funeral
mass and their demeanor
told the story of their
meaningful connection
with Siobhan. In “seedlings
to harvest,” an article
written by Siobhan for
Nativity Prep’s website,
she described the strong
sense of community and the
challenge and reward of
working at such a unique
institution. “But with
patience and compassion,
a little bit of freedom and
independence mixed with
guidance and wisdom, these
fifth grade seedlings very
gradually bloom into a full
harvest by the eighth
grade.” These are clearly
the words of a dedicated,
passionate teacher who
believed in the power of
the educational process.
Many of us were aware
of Siobhan’s struggle with
depression and the tremendous
efforts both she and
her family made to help her
find relief. In spite of it,
she found many ways to
contribute, to achieve, to
offer help and encouragement
to those around
her, and to live a full and
meaningful life for as
long as she could. We
can celebrate Siobhan’s
life by reaching out with
understanding, support,
hope and love to those
who may be similarly
afflicted and by supporting
medical research
that focuses on finding
a cure.
As most of you know,
the Kinlin family has
been a part of the CCA
community for many
years. Rob, CCA class
of 1998, Betsy, CCA
class of 2002, and
Mollie, CCA class of
2010, have lost a sister
and Bob and Ellen have
lost a daughter. Our
hope is that the
thoughts and prayers of
the CCA community
will offer some comfort
as the Kinlins cope with
their tragic loss. In a
lesser way it’s CCA’s
loss also, and we are
grateful for having
known and worked with
Siobhan.
Remembering Siobhan the Actress, by Richard Bellamy
I will always remember Siobhan for her passion for drama – her passion for
assuming the role of another person – and for her dedication to her part. She
always wanted to go through a scene one more time. She always wanted to
portray her character perfectly. In my mind, I will always remember Siobhan
for her performances. She will always play out her roles in my memory.
As a 7 th grader (she told me she had wanted to be in Middle/Upper School
Drama Club way back when she was in the Lower School), she played a
precocious young actress in Rehearsal for Murder (1995). I always
remember her saying, with memorable sarcasm, “Don’t be so obsequious,
Leo.” What a big word for such a small 7 th grader!
The following year Siobhan played Rachel Brown, a young girl torn between
strict faith and fervent love in Inherit the Wind (1996). “A thought is like a
child inside your body. It has to be born.” Later, in her junior year she played
in Fahrenheit 451 (2000), taking on the role of Clarisse, the young girl
who brings Montag in touch with the feelings he has suppressed. “If you never
feel silly, then you’ll never feel great.” When we, very nervously, presented this
play at a drama festival at Cape Cod Community College, on a stage that was
so vast compared to the area in the Commons that was our school stage,
Siobhan gathered the cast together for a group hug and a prayer before the
curtain rose.
Then, in 2001, Siobhan played Deanie Loomis in Splendor in the Grass.
As a young girl devoted passionately to a young man who strays from her,
Siobhan played her most challenging role. We went over and over a very
dramatic scene so that she could get it just right! But she got it just right. She
always got it just right. I will never forget how she touched us all with the lines
from a poem by Wordsworth, her last lines on our stage: “Though nothing can
bring back the hour/ Of splendor in the grass, of glory in the flower;/ We will
grieve not, rather find/ Strength in what remains behind.”
Coaching Siobhan, by Irene Santos
Not only did I have
Siobhan as a student,
but I also had her as a
player for several years
when I coached the
girls’ lacrosse team.
She was a terrific
athlete who took her
playing very seriously
and worked hard on
her skills. She had an
incredible amount of
tenacity and gracefulness
as a player as she
moved the ball down
the field. She would let
no one stop or get in
her way. She had a
delightful sense of
humor that often came
to light on the long
drives to and from the
games in the school
vans (back then the
coaches had to drive).
Not only was she a
“beautiful” young lady
on the outside, but
also, and more importantly,
from the inside.
She was very caring
and supportive of those
around her. I shall
always cherish my
memories of Siobhan.
you love becomes a
memory, the memory
becomes a treasure.”
The Excitement of Mollie! by Susan Vandemoer
It was my first year teaching at
Cape Cod Academy. I entered
my classroom to find sixteen
anxious, excited students waiting,
among them Siobhan Kinlin
and my own daughter. It
was Siobhan’s first year at the
Academy. Siobhan was a
myriad of emotions and energies:
flashing blue eyes, swinging
dark hair, and an eagerness
to learn about everything,
experience all she could as fast
as she could.
Siobhan continued to make
good friends, act in our plays
and strive to do her very best
at all times. Yet the memory
I hold closest that year is
Siobhan’s excitement as we all
ticked off the days before
the birth of her baby sister,
Mollie. Siobhan was
torn between wanting to
stay home and care for
her mother or come to
school, learn and be with
her friends. By midmorning
every day I had
to let Siobhan run downstairs
to the office to
check for a phone call
from her house, or we
would jump every time
the phone would ring in
the upper hall. (This
was long before we each
had a phone in the classroom.)
Finally, the call
arrived; joyously Siobhan
My Friend Siobhan, by Jen Vandemoer
could greet her new baby
sister.
Many years later I had
the pleasure of having
Mollie Kinlin in my class.
I don’t think there was a
day that year that I didn’t
have the memory of
Siobhan’s anxious waiting
cross my mind. Mollie
would grin at me and
she would launch into a
perfect imitation of her
sister for me. Happily,
Siobhan will live on
through her loving family
and her delightful sister,
Mollie!
I used to go over to Siobhan’s house when we were younger, and we would
walk down to the center of Osterville and cruise in and out of shops like we
were someone important. It was a game I thought we were going to get in
trouble for, talking loudly, pretending we owned the place. We were two
silly 12 or 13 year olds acting like we needed to have whatever they sold in
the store (our favorite was the frame shop). I was so embarrassed and shy,
but Siobhan was confident and playful, flashing a mischievous look, teaching
me that it was okay to step outside my comfort zone and be a little nuts.
One game she loved to play that really tested my quiet side was turning on the radio
to any station and performing whatever song came on, whether we knew it or not, in
front of whomever was in the room! Wow, I was mortified, but I did it. I may have
made a fool of myself, but it did not matter because I would look at Siobhan and she
would be beaming and laughing, having a great time! These memories were lessons that
I learned from Siobhan at a young age and I will carry them with me always.
“When someone you
love becomes a
memory, the
memory becomes a
Sleepy Siobhan with baby sister,
Mollie
treasure.”
Siobhan, the Young Woman, by Mary Pat Vogt
I remember Siobhan as a kind young woman and a wonderful precalculus student.
Siobhan would regularly come early in the morning before school to review algebra
and graphing concepts. She kept me on my toes with her questions. She was always
challenging herself to understand the concepts. The picture I have in my mind of
Siobhan is Siobhan on prom night, dressed in an elegant white gown. She is smiling
and is surrounded by her friends.
Page 5

Siobhan Kinlin, by Daryl Forth
After having been away from CCA for a time, Siobhan returned to join a wellintentioned
but mischievous French class. She missed a lot of school that year.
One might think that having even one fewer student in the room would have
created more order; in fact, just the opposite was true. Whenever Siobhan was
there, everyone wanted to rise to her standard, and behavior improved. She
was an amazing role model, good at everything. Others increased their efforts
to earn her approval, not to compete with her. Everyone loved her, everyone
responded to her, students and teachers alike. She was her own toughest taskmaster,
accepting only her best work for even the most trivial requirements.
Completely open and selfless in her contributions in class, she was always a part
of the activity, but somehow above it. Everything she touched was better for it.
We all learned from her, every day. But her way was to thank others for inspiring
her. She wrote beautiful thank-you notes, when the recipients should have
been thanking her. Her yearbook page was filled with photos of people who
loved her, and her words of gratitude to those who had touched her. At trustee
Siobhan’s 2001 Year Book Page Bob Smith’s memorial, someone said that heaven must have needed someone to
head a Village Association. Siobhan is one of the most beautiful spirits I have
ever encountered, and another Osterville spirit gone too soon. Totally selfless, and too good for the world, she
touched lives and hearts. It would not surprise me to learn that she is somewhere now teaching guardian angels their
craft.
than those against our greatest
rivals. It is a Friday evening of
camaraderie and catching up with
friends and faculty. The game begins at
5:30PM. Enjoy after-game pizza with the
immense crowd that shows up to cheer
Williams University, is spending the
semester in Florence and had the
chance to visit Annaliese in Paris.
Liz has also been able to enjoy
some time in Italy, recently saw the
Leaning Tower of Pisa, then traveled
to Cinque Terre. She has plans to
go to Germany, Amsterdam &
Greece through her school.
Liam Thomson ’06 is attending
Colby-Sawyer College in New
London, NH. He is a business major
with a minor in community and environmental
studies. Liam enjoys playing
rugby at Colby- Sawyer.
Marissa DeMello ‘07 was named
to the Dean’s List and is being inducted
into the Oracle Honor Society
at Ithaca College. This society
requires students to place in the top
ten percent of first year students in
the school of Humanities and Science.
Mitchell Freddura ’07 is attending
the University of Delaware and
was recently inducted into the National
Society for Collegiate
Scholars.
Dan Sidman ‘07 made the
varsity soccer team this year at
for everyone. The drama unfolds and
not one player or spectator walks away
feeling anything but great pleasure from
the experience!
Colby College. Dan is playing
center mid and had an assist in
Colby’s first scrimmage. According
to coach Aaron Crowell ‘86,
only 5% of athletes ever make a
college roster.
CCA Science Instructor Aaron
Crowell ‘86 heard from Abby
Doyle ‘08 that she made the
Lynchburg College varsity girls
soccer team. Abby also wrote
a great note to this year's CCA
soccer team. Abby has played in
five games for the 2nd ranked DIV
III team in the country.
Abby says that college is going
great and that she loves it in
Lynchburg. Her classes are going
well and she is enjoying them.
Her teachers are really helpful,
too. Abby went on to say that
she is glad that she is at
Lynchburg, but she misses Cape
Cod Academy and the people.
Abby Dreier x’08 is headed
to Chicago this fall. She’ll be
attending The School of the Art
Institute of Chicago to study
either sculpture and writing or art
therapy.
Amani El Sehrawey ‘08 loves
her classes at Boston University
and loves living in Boston, but she
misses CCA and her teammates.
Eliza Heussler '08 spent her
summer working at Gym Express
in Centerville and doing various
babysitting jobs around town. She
just started her freshman year at
Trinity College in Hartford and is
taking 2 French classes, statistics
and Italian Language and Culture.
She is planning a trip to Italy
to practice her Italian.

Homecoming Picnic 2008
Liz Dunning and daughter,Julia Dunning ‘06 at
this year’s Homecoming Picnic
This year’s homecoming picnic was held on Saturday, September
20, 2008. Under the bluest skies we’ve seen in months, over 500
people came out to enjoy junior varsity soccer, varsity soccer and
a cross country running match with Mashpee High School. Not
only were we able to extend hospitality to the students and
parents from Mashpee High School, we were also able to enjoy
their sincere gratitude as we served up hamburgers and hot dogs
to all! It was our great pleasure to share this bounty and celebrate
this special occasion with so many CCA students, families and
CCA’s extended community which, of course, always includes
students and parents all over Cape Cod.
We had a few alums visit us during our ‘08
homecoming picnic. Those who came to enjoy
the games, the food and the fun were TS Bagley
‘08, Kasey MacRoberts ‘08, Catherine ‘08 &
Michael Pajolek ‘06, Jesus Ferriera ’08, and Julia
Dunning ‘06. It was great to see all of them on
campus. We encourage all alums to watch for
next year’s date and plan to join us as well. Once we have games
planned, we will send postcard invitations and save the date cards.
In addition, Lucy Blanchard Burton ‘84, was also at the picnic as our
Homecoming Picnic co-chair! Lucy’s son, James ‘08, represents our
first graduate of a graduate here at CCA, an auspicious distinction for sure!
Our beloved Seahawk,
CCA’s Mascot
Even our big, beautiful bird, the Seahawk, made an appearance and danced around
drumming up enthusiasm for the already exciting games. This magnificent bird always
brings many smiles to the faces of those in its presence.
Irene Santos Honored for 25 Years
Irene Santos is only the
second teacher (excluding
Tom Evans as Headmaster,
of course) at CCA to reach
25 years of dedicated
service. Madame Forth
reached this distinction last
year. Both continue to
offer CCA great experience,
generosity and
dedication.
In addition to Mrs. Santos’
great devotion to CCA
students over these 25
years, which you already
know about if you had Mrs.
Santos as a teacher, we
thought we might share
Class of 2008 Gift
The class of 2008 gave a
very generous senior class
gift to CCA, a sundial.
This sundial is proudly on
display outside of Davis
Commons, near Senior
some personal information,
too. She has a
great affinity for
dolphins, perched in
prominent places all
over her house. Four
hand-carved dolphins
stand in her backyard;
Splish, Splash, Spout
and you’ll have to guess
the name of the last
one. She is probably
the only teacher on
Cape Cod who owns
12 leather jackets!
Most importantly, of
course, is the dedication
that Mrs. Santos
Corner. This seemed
a fitting place for this
great gift. Thank you
to every ‘08 graduate
who helped to make
this happen. It was
continues to
offer us each
and every
day. Her
enthusiasm is
exemplary
and has
earned her
this welldeserved
honor of
distinction.
She will join
Madame
Forth on a 25- Irene Santos, Physical Education Chair
year plaque,
dedicated to these
remarkable teachers.
Your support of
Cape Cod Academy
100% participation that
made this gift possible
and we realize what a
nice message that
sends to our school
community.
is important to us, not
only as contributors to
our important Annual
Fund, but also as
ambassadors of our
Howard Thomas,
Buildings and
Grounds Manager,
and Cathy Cetta,
Head of Upper
School, spent time
getting the correct
position for the
sundial. When
you are next on
campus, stop by
of the values that CCA
continues to work
hard to instill in each
student, every day.
Liz Finkelman ‘06 Honorary Chair at Summer Auction
Liz Finkelman spent countless
hours helping with our
fundraising auction alongside
her mom, Janice Johnson,
when she attended CCA
and we thought Liz was the
perfect one to honor at
this year’s “Pirates of the
Academy” auction as our
honorary chairperson. We
were right.
Liz enthusiastically filled the
shoes of her mom and made
her own lasting footprints on
this year’s auction. Although
her mom is no longer here
to give of her time and talent
as she passed away in Liz’s
senior year, Liz came to
celebrate with us and keep
the spirit of the entire event
alive, not just in Janice’s
memory, but to help make
this school available for many
the Academy” Auction, July 2008
future CCA students in the
years ahead.
Liz helped us to greet the
many attendees, entice
enthusiastic bidding, and
cheer with great fervor
when the support for CCA
was very apparent.
We thank you, Liz, for
your continued support of
CCA. We are proud to
have you as one of our
alumni and as a lifetime
supporter, maybe not
always in person, of our
CCA auction.
On Friday, November 7th, we held
our annual special assembly to
honor those faculty and staff
members who have shown great
dedication to CCA marked by 10
years, 20 years and 25 years of
service. As many of you know, it
is tradition to signify this great
accomplishment by presenting a
short anecdotal story and an official
CCA chair to each faculty/staff
member who has reached 10 years
at CCA.
A few years ago, we found ourselves
with the need to reward 20
Page 12
years of commitment and did so
with the presentation of a CCA
mirror, signed with gratitude by
CCA’s board of trustees.
Madame Forth was the first
faculty member to reach 25 years
at CCA and last year we honored
her with flowers. This year, Irene
Santos joined Madame Forth
in this distinction and we also
honored her with flowers, a
tribute told in the form of a story
and with the engraving of her
name, along with Madame Forth’s,
on a plaque that will proudly hang
on CCA’s walls. We hope to be
able to add many more names to
this 25 year plaque as the years
unfold.
In addition to the recognition
of Irene Santos for 25 years,
this year’s 10 year CCA chair
recipients were Aaron Crowell
‘86, Lisa Fackler, Susan Fletcher,
Richard Murphy and Mary Gail
Wareham. This year’s 20 year
CCA mirror recipients were
Janice Hank and Cathy Cetta.
Congratulations to all of these
faculty members.

a question and answer
session with alums to talk
about their college life
experiences. In the audience
are juniors and seniors, ready
to ask pertinent questions
that might help them to be
best prepared for their own
Invitations will be
sent soon to all of our
graduates of ‘08, ‘07,
‘06 and ‘05 to join us
Today in CCA Sports, by Phil Kenney
It has been a great fall season for
our sports teams! The Girls
Varsity Soccer ‘08 team has an
impressive record of seven wins,
three losses, and six ties with just
two games left to the season.
They are the 2008 Lighthouse
Conference Champions, for
three consecutive years now, and
have received the 2008 Cape and
Islands Sportsmanship Award for
three years in a row, which we
hear is a feat never before
accomplished by another school.
In addition, they have qualified for
MIAA State Tournament, also for
three straight years!
For Boys Varsity Soccer, the ‘08
record is eight wins, six losses, two
ties with just two games remaining
until the end of season. They are
the 2008 Lighthouse Conference
Runner-up and have qualified for
MIAA State Tournament for the
third year in a row.
Moving on to our Varsity Golf
‘08. On Saturday, October 4th,
four members of the golf team
traveled to Nantucket to play in
the Cape and Islands Tournament
hosted by Nantucket High School.
The tournament was played this
year at the challenging Nantucket
Golf Club on a beautiful but very
windy day. CCA finished third in
the nine team field, avenging early
season losses to both Nantucket
and Mashpee High Schools.
This year’s Boys Cross
Country running team ‘08 has a
record of 4 wins and 5 losses as
of late October, with just one
meet remaining. The Girls Cross
Country team ‘08 has a record
of seven wins and two losses as
of late October, with one meet
remaining as well. Both teams
will compete in the 2008 Eastern
Massachusetts State Meet on
Nov. 8th at Franklin Park,
Boston, MA.
Career Day Planned for March 13, 2009
In conjunction with the March
the evening of March 13th, we
are hosting a career day during
which CCA alums will be our
Baseball Field Soon to be a
Cape Cod Academy Reality
The construction
of a new baseball
field is currently
underway at
CCA! The new
field is next to
Tom Evans Field,
the newest soccer field. This great new
addition has come about due to a collective
vision for the future development of CCA,
guests to share their career insights
with our current upper school
students. We hope that this day
will be the first of an annual gathering
meant to provide some great
resources to our current students
strong interest in baseball, and the thoughtful
generosity of an anonymous donor who came
forward to fund this important and exciting
project.
We plan to complete the construction in late
fall ‘09. It will require a season to establish the
turf, then we can look forward to the beginning
of a baseball program in spring of 2010.
as they endeavor to make future
career choices.
We hope to have many career
fields represented, including
medical, finance/business,
advertising and public relations,
fine and performing arts,
education, legal, technology,
entrepreneurial, commercial
real estate, military and social
services. If you are interested
in joining us as a professional
resource for CCA’s current
students, please contact Jean
Development, at CCA (508)
We have asked several college-age alums to be our guest speakers for our
January 2009 Parents Association meeting, scheduled for January 14, 2009.
CCA parents have expressed great interest in hearing from young alums
themselves about college life, how well prepared they felt or feel for the
academic load, how well prepared socially and what advice they might have
for parents of other high school age students when pursuing a college
choice. If you are currently attending college and are available to join a
panel of other alums on January 14th at our Parents Association meeting,
please contact Laurie Wyndham at CCA. We’d love to have your
