All sound and fury…
come to nothing
A year ago when the Telangana state issue first came to the fore,
I scoffed at the whole debate. I felt it was a non-issue, on which
people would soon lose interest and forget. A few months later,
when the storm started to gain force, I was compelled to take a
stance. I was clear; I did not want a separate state and supported
Samiakyandhra. My opinions seemed logical and any other
argument untenable. I had an answer to every idea that said
otherwise and believed everyone would soon realize it. I was
VOICE December '12 2
Our Chancellor Dr. Lavu Rathaiah has been emphasing on the students
to develop communication skills for effective expression of their ideas
and display team spirit and leadership qualities necessary for them to
excel in any field of their choice.
He often says that effective communication is the hallmark of great
leaders.
Many of us may have our own definition of leadership or success. But,
look at some of the most visible personalities in the country today.
What is it that Indra Nooyi, Arundhati Roy, Kiran Bedi, Nandan
Nilakeni, Narendra Modi, Medha Patkar, Chetan Bhagat, Mayawathi and Aravind Kejriwal all have in
common?
Yes, no doubt they all have great ideas and thoughts to fire up and transform the country.
But, more importantly they are all powerful communicators. The millions rallying around Kejriwal or
Medha Patkar bring home to all of us the vital point that radical ideas alone cannot change the society or
transform the world.
It is the power with which they are communicated that gives them force to inspire, influence or mobilize.
Look at any sphere of activity around you, be it sports, cinema, business or politics, the most visible are
those who are able to articulate their ideas logically, convincingly and inspirationally. Coming to think of
it, would Barrack Obama, a mixed race intellectual, have ever dreamt of becoming the president of a
predominantly white America, if it were not for his excellent oratorical skills?
Obama’s example is a case in point. It illustrates to all of us, how someone who can effectively communicate
thoughts, ideas, and feelings is better equipped for success on the job. No wonder, then why recruiters
place so much importance to this skill.
Communication involves interchange of thoughts, opinions, or information through speech or writing. All
interviewers judge candidates on the basis of how they communicate. They believe that skills can be
improvised on the job; but ability to communicate well is important, as every employee becomes the
representing face of the company.
Our Chancellor wishes to see our students become leaders and change agents of the society, and would
like to see students emerge as successful professionals and leaders who will have the power of influence
and make their mark in any profession they choose.
He wants all of you to realize that the way you communicate, whether in speech or through writings like e-
mails, personal blogs or through online social interaction will have a big impact on how you get on with
people and get the things you want.
Moreover, good communication skills can help you avoid conflict and solve problems – they are important
for making friends and having healthy relationships.
If you want to change the world, improve your business, or get ahead in the workplace, you must first start
mastering the art of communication. Learn to express yourself clearly, logically and assertively, both in
writing and speech. Needless, to say some of the most influential people in the world today, be it leaders,
entrepreneurs, or visionaries, are those who have mastered this art of communication.
Chancellor wants our students use this platform of the monthly newsletter, VOICE to make themselves be
heard, seen and appreciated.
shocked when students,
politicians and my auto driver
insisted that the demand for a
separate Telangana was
legitimate, that it symbolized the
real aspirations of the people. I
grew concerned as the situation
turned from bad to worse; as the
gullible public gave in to mass
hysteria failing to see the
transparent provocation of
politicians.
After endless dithering of
committees, slogan crying,
street rallies, acts of vandalism
i.e., desecration of statues and
burning of buses, and the
political machinations of the
state and centre, the issue still
remains unresolved. Lot of public
energy expended for nothing.
The chief actors in the whole
drama are still unrelenting. No
one expects the politicians, for
whom an extra state means more
seats, to give it up. Neither will
the businessmen who have
invested heavily let go of
Hyderabad.
But what many of us didn’t see
coming, was the biggest
resistance from the side that had
no self interest, only
misdirection, i.e., the violent
story-turning involvement of
students. Somehow the
youngsters had come to swallow
the idea, that this is a
Dharmayuddh, and a side must
be picked and blood spilled. And
what did they have to gain from
it? Nothing at all…but they were
hung on the righteousness of the
Telangana cause. They even had
the audacity to claim, after their
unruly and criminal ways, not to
be arrested or suspended from
college. Such ignorance on
matters of law, from the future
citizens does not augur well for a
developing country like ours.
What bothers the common man is
that he can’t get to his office due
to constant bandhs, that his son’s
academic schedule is disturbed
and that governance in the state
has come to a standstill. The
farthest concern that he may have,
is that he will be required to pay
STD charges to call his friends at
Hyderabad, if a separate state
materializes.
Like Anna Hazare’s struggle, the
movement built fast, but the
motivation soon fizzled out. All
the sound and fury came to a
naught. However, after all that
agitation, one thing is pretty
much clear. Be it a social issue
or a personal one, today’s youth
have boundless energy .If they
aspire for something, they will
fight it out with everything they
have got.
But who’s to say their cause is
right? Regardless of whether it
is career, politics, war or love of
one’s life, misguided passion is
a dangerous thing. The only way
to get out is to have a clear head
and ask ourselves :
“Is it worth it, after all?”
Ethical hacking helps find out security issues in various websites. If alerted, the websites
would be too glad to plug their loopholes and make their sites as secure as possible.
They would also reward ethical hackers in a suitable manner. Harsha Vardhan Boppana
explains how he became an ethical hacker in his own words:
When I was in the first year of my
college, I did not even know how
to install an Operating system.
Later, in the early days of my Face
book, someone hacked my
account and I got upset. Then I
thought if he could hack mine,
why couldn’t I hack his? Soon
enough, I hacked his account and
owned his groups. He came round
and requested me to return his
groups. I felt proud and a little
confused. I wondered whether I
should do it again. I also felt
concerned about the security of
users like me. So I started to check
the security issues in Facebook
and finally succeeded in finding
vulnerabilities (security issues).
This gave me an inspiration to
move on to other sites.
Most parents get worried when
their child enters unknown
territories and mine were no
different. Initially, I kept my
activities from them and revealed
my conquests only to some of my
classmates who supported and
encouraged me. After I received
the WHITEHAT accolade from
Facebook I explained to my
parents what I was involved in.
They were surprised but
expressed their happiness when I
mentioned the appreciation I was
receiving. Today web security is
a big problem for all internet
companies. In order to fight
security issues, giants like
Facebook, Microsoft, Google,
and Apple have introduced BUG
BOUNTY programs and
Acknowledgements for
discovering Vulnerabilities/
Security Issues. I have received
"Ethical hacking is my forte"
Acknowledgements by 70% of
the companies who conduct these
programs.
I turned my attention to Pay
Pal, the largest online banking
system in the world today when
it announced a bug bounty
program in June this year.
Initially I wondered whether I
would be able to find any security
issues in the website of such a big
organization. But soon I could
detect as many as 40 vulnerabilities
and reported them promptly
and earned $ 9,000 in three
months.
Facebook: I have also detected
two vulnerabilities that affect user
privacy in Facebook and reported
the same to its Security Team.
One
of the vulnerabilities involved
changing the password without
knowing the older one. Another
vulnerability I discovered: when
you click links, especially on a
malicious link and click Google
keyword, you get one Lakh
results which exposes the user
information. I suggested how not
to enter the search. Facebook
analyzed and fixed the
vulnerabilities for which I got a
bounty of $ 1,000 as well as the
accolade of WHITE HAT. My
name is listed on their thanks
giving page (http://www.
facebook.com/whitehat/).
Microsoft: I am listed in the
Security Researcher Acknowledgments
for Microsoft Online
Services for July and August
(http://technet.microsoft. com/enus/security/cc308589)
for
reporting vulnerability in
Microsoft domains.
Google: I am listed in Google
Thanks giving page for reporting
VOICE December '12 3
security vulnerabilities that effect
user privacy (http://www.
google.com/about/appsecurity/
hall-of-fame/distinction/)
Apple: I detected how the apple
website was vulnerable to SQL
injection, through which one can
capture their database and hack
into the total server. I reported the
same for which I have been
acknowledged as a Security
Researcher on their Thanks giving
page.
I got listed a second time on the
Thanks Giving page when I
detected another vulnerability/
security issue in Apple web
servers. (http://support.apple.
com/kb /HT1318)
I have also reported Security
Issues to Kick*** Torrents, E
Bay, Adobe, Stanford University,
Harvard University etc.
I wish to continue working in
these areas and will always be
indebted to my online friends on
a group named, Indishell,
numbering about 100 members
who had cleared my doubts,
shared information and gave me
invaluable support.
Congrats: Harsha Vardhan
Engineers take a hard look at 'Soft Skills'
Things like leadership and
knowing how to help a company
win business never go out of
style, even during boom times,
when engineers might get
complacent about these “soft
skills.”
Soft skills are just as important
as engineering skills. Employers
look for people who can lead a
team, someone who can get a
small team—four to six
people—motivated and a person
who can quickly appraise which
person is best at doing what. It
is hard enough to find a good
engineer; finding one who can
lead a team and speak winningly
with a customer.
Most employers today, choose
to hire skills rather than people.
Engineers have to stay polished
these days, because they can
become obsolete, not due to
inadequate technical skills, but
because their company does
something that eliminates their
job, a merger or an expansion.
Those who aspire to become
global professionals must keep
track of what is happening in the
global market to determine gaps
in their knowledge, skills and
attitudes so they will know where
to focus their learning. The key
non-technical skills preferred are
public speaking, written
communications and ethics.
Many of us might downplay our
need to understand or acquire the
so-called soft skills, believing that
they are only necessary for
managers. But even designers
who have zero interest in
management positions admit that
in many instances, the skills
needed to lead a design team are
similar to those needed to manage
a department.
One of the different techniques to
achieve success is to constantly
assess your position and the way
you come across to fellow
students. Constantly ask yourself
the question, ‘How do I come
across to my peers, faculty or
family?’ Great motivators and
leaders often promote the
importance of developing habits
that encourage positive attitudes,
enthusiasm and confidence. Once
a habit has been developed, it will
carry you through even the
toughest of times when jobs
grow scarce or competition
becomes intense.
that Kolleru is a wetland
extending over 300 square
kilometers in Krishna and West
Godavari districts. The largest
sweet water lake has not only
shrunk in size but faced grave
threat due to pollution in the last
three decades as revealed by
satellite pictures.
While extended habitations
reduced its size, the lake faced
greater danger due to the greed of
some people who exploited it to
enrich themselves. Their
activities posed threat to several
species of birds and fishes.
Nobody has a right to penalise the
lives of other organisms, he
asserted.
Citing a hypothetical example, he
said that a common crow and a
house sparrow provided mutual
shelter and lived happily. But
when the crow turned greedy and
wanted to drive away the sparrow,
both of them perished. The
example should spur everyone to
think on mutual dependence of
different living organisms and the
need for their preservance for
Dr. Durga Prasad pointed out that
human beings derived perpetual
benefits from the environment.
But some selfish people
overexploited nature and caused
irreparable damage to environment
due to their greed till nature
began recoiling on our
civilisation.
He felt happy that this
development made people and
governments sit up and bestow
attention to environment, to
preserve bio-diversity in a bid to
ensure our continued and
comfortable lives on this earth.
Following sustained efforts of the
government to preserve Kolleru
lake, several of the native species
of fishes, aquatic plants and algae,
which are all self-renewing, are
now enriching it. A bio-diversity
educate people on how to live in
our natural habitat with due regard
to other species for the continued
Don’t get squeamish if a whiff of
raw flesh and blood hits your
nostrils, on entering the
‘Kapotheswara Temple’, perhaps
the only extant temple in India of
Lord Siva as ‘Kapotheswara.’
Located in a sleepy hamlet,
Narasaraopet in Guntur District,
the temple surrounded by a
rugged hilly landscape, overlaid
visitors. The history of the temple
is replete with rich legends and
folk narratives.
The deity, embodied in the linga,
is called Kapotheswara, after the
famous story of Sibi in the
Mahabharata. The compassionate
king, is said to have
chopped off a chunk of his own
body to rescue a kapotha (dove)
from a pursuing eagle. Curiously
enough, you will find two large
vertical cavities on the Linga, as
if portions had been scooped out,
symbolic of Lord Sibi’s act of
sacrificing his flesh to save the
Kapotha.
The temple is renowned for its
marvellous architecture. The
Shrill cries over
The VU has decided to ban cellphones on the campus with effect from Nov 15
In my experience, there have been lot of occasions in classrooms where students
Mytholgy with a
modern twist
That we are truly in an age of
fusion is evident from the way
The Immortals of Meluha has
been selling like hot cakes. After
a long hiatus, another IIM
graduate has succeeded to a large
extent in fusing mythology with
fiction in an effective way. The
story, though borrowed from
Hindu mythology, is highly
original in terms of interpretation.
The first book of the Shiva trilogy
revolves around Shiva, the tribal
chief from Tibet who leads his
tribe to the wonderful land of
Meluha in search of peace. He
soon discovers he is the Neelkanth,
ordained to be the saviour
of Meluhans , the destroyer of evil
who will save the Suryavanshis
from the evil Chandravanshis of
the neighboring land. After initial
attempts to ward off the adulation
of worshipping admirers, Shiva
finally relents and agrees to fight
for the admirable Meluhans.
While dealing with his new found
popularity, Shiva meets Sati , the
Meluhan princess who is believed
to be cursed. Fearing that she can
bring only misfortune to her loved
ones, Sati remains cold and aloof
to the advances of Shiva.
As Shiva tries to woo Sati,
turbulence in the Suryavanshi
kingdom gradually builds up.
Shiva responds with astuteness by
devising appropriate strategies to
protect the Meluhans, who rejoice
as Neelkanth rids them of their
suffering. He changes laws to
protect the oppressed and weak.
He wins over Sati and finally
marries her. Soon the country goes
VOICE December '12 6
to war. The rest of the story is
about how Shiva defeats the
Chandravanshis and reaches a
moment of self-realization, when
understands that he had been all
wrong. The book finally ends with
a nail-biting moment.
The best feature of the book is
its contemporary narrative.
Current social and scientific
issues are alluded to. Despite the
mythological milieu, all the
characters are very relatable. The
marijuana smoking Shiva though
intelligent also strikes the readers
as somewhat imperti-nent. Sati,
the Suryavanshi princess is a
strong willed, highly independent
and courageous woman who wins
all battles except the one with
herself.
The author builds interesting
tracks without distorting known
facts about the characters. The
language, however, can do with
more sophistication. But the
author sure has a way with words.
The poetic style is impressive and
the author keeps you waiting for
the sequel.
Its OBAMA again!
History was made on November 6 as the US President Barack Obama triumphs in
2012 US presidential election. He was re-elected, defeating Republican candidate,
Mitt Romney. Obama won 332 electoral votes, while Mitt Romney managed only
206. The conquest was much closer than the numbers suggest. Obama managed to
get hold of the all the five SWING states (esp. Ohio) at the end of the campaign.
Syrian Civil War
Syrian government troops backed by tanks battled to oust rebel forces from an
opposition stronghold in a Damascus suburb in the heaviest fighting in the capital for
months. Also, internet blackout continues to restrain the rebels. World powers have
remained deadlocked on how to end Syria’s crisis, with the U.S., Europe and many
Arab nations calling on its President Assad to stand down, while Russia, China and
Iran continue to back him.
Hailed as a befitting end to
Christopher Nolan’s Batman
trilogy, The Dark Knight Rises is
a ballad of a legendary figure,
who devoted himself to much
more than just ideals.
The movie starts with a depiction
of all its characters in a state of
disarray – A restless Bruce Wayne
(Christian Bale) haunts a dark and
eerie Wayne Manor moping over
the loss of his love; Commissioner
Gordon (Gary Oldman) is
weighed down by his deception
as he attends various functions in
honor of the fallen Harvey Dent;
a stunning Anne Hathaway as
Selina Kyle (a catwoman) relieves
Bal Thackeray is no more
Bal Keshav Thackeray, a hardcore politician, who founded the Marathi ethnocentric
Shiv Sena. Thackeray died on Nov 17 due to cardiac arrest in Mumbai. He was
accorded a state funeral and large number of mourners attended.
Gotham’s fortunate sons of their
valuables. Marion Cotillard carries
of her role well as the delightful
Miranda Tate. The most interesting
part about the movie is the unbiased
emphasis on all the characters of the
story. Batman does not take the
limelight as the city’s only hope. A
few of GCPD’s valiant detectives
risk their lives reconnoitering the
city’s dark streets.
Bane (Tom Hardy) makes a worthy
adversary – a well prepared one and
a well informed one, literally
breaking Batman. Very soon
Gotham lies in ruins, and anarchy
rules its streets as a nuclear weapon
ticks ominously somewhere in the
city. Bane is mysterious and keeps
his motives concealed.
An unsure Batman finds a much
needed and ardent supporter in
Officer Blake (Joseph Gordon
Levitt), beckoning him back into
the fight. Levitt puts on his
A - game as the Robin. As Batman
lies broken and imprisoned in a
well in a far away desert, he
rediscovers both himself and his
adversary and truly ‘rises’.
Christian Bale puts out a very
convincing performance as a man
torn apart by life and responsibility.
The technology used in the
movie is awesome. With broad
strokes of the camera, Nolan in
stunning visuals brings to life
Gotham and its streets. Also, in
true Nolan style the film offers a
gripping narrative, keeping the
audience on tenter-hooks to the
very climax, till Wayne as the
nemesis strikes back foiling the
sinister designs of Bane.
A must watch for all Batman fans,
I would say.
Alumni News
Hello folks!
This is Avinash from the Class
of 2011. I hope some of you at
least remember me. I am
currently working in TCS. My
work is in the TCS-Client
Location at Microsoft Campus.
There is something about
working in a Microsoft Building
at 2 am. Yes, in the software
industry, you can never know at
what time you will leave office.
If there is an issue (bug), the
time to resolve it may range
from 10 min to 10 hours. I don’t
want to frighten you guys, but I
want to give you an insider’s
idea of how you will spend the
rest of your life if you choose
this industry.
It is interview season for the
Final year students. I’m sure all
of you have been well trained by
our faculty but often we fail to
follow certain tips successfully.
Here are a few Do’s and Don’ts
that I swear by:
1. Always give the interviewer
a firm shakehand and smile
as soon as you meet her/him.
Trust me, if you want to make
an impression, nothing works
better.
2. Don’t brag about your
strengths. Don’t fill your
Hi friends,
Hello everyone, I am Ravikanth
Mannem who passed out with a
mechanical degree in the
summer of 2012. Currently I’m
working in Infotech Enterprises
Ltd as a level-3 design engineer.
Earlier I worked for a
very brief period with the Heavy
Oil Machine Engineering
Department, which deals with
heavy mining vehicle design.
The last few months have been
profoundly enriching for me.
After entering the corporate I
have tried to keep myself ahead
of the learning curve. A subject
that I previously took a few
months to learn I am now able
to master in a few days. Thanks
to the focused environment that
prevails in the industry, I have
learned some tough but
necessary lessons of life. I have
come to understand that, though
we may work for eight or nine
hours a day, our efforts become
trivial if we do not show
genuine interest in our work. So,
my first advice to all of you my
juniors is:
resumes with C, C++, and Java
etc just for the sake of it. As
you know, JAVA is a wide area
in which there can be
innumerable questions. So
before you say my forte is
Java, think twice. There is
nothing wrong in saying, my
forte is C (I did the same). Just
be honest, don’t panic and
keep smiling.
3. Don’t bluff. The person
interviewing you might have
conducted thousands of
interviews and he can easily
understand if you fake
knowledge.
I did my B.Tech in CSE and I am
currently working on SQL. There
is no hard and fast rule that CSE
people will get to work in Java/
.Net or that ECE engineers will
be assigned projects in their
Follow your passions and
never set career goals to appease
somebody else other than
yourself.
Those with industrious nature
will certainly shine. When it
comes to core/heavy industries,
employees with a temperament
for commitment and consistent
hard work are more visible. Our
learning rate will be greatly
accelerated once we work real
time.
The simultaneous acquirement of
the knowledge of new
technologies, observing their
respective domains. Once you
join as a trainee at TCS, you are
expected to be flexible and agile.
Everyone must have a basic
knowledge of Java and SQL. The
non CSE people will have a tough
time in the initial training if their
basics are not strong. This is not
just for TCS, but also for most
other companies.
Life in the software industry is
completely different and quite
exciting too. Words like
resources, associates,
requirement analysis, issues will
become your buzzwords. You
will receive hundreds of e-mails
every day. Team Outings, Team
lunches/ Potlucks are fun and at
the same time work isn’t a
cakewalk.
I suggest you to learn one
language (preferably .Net) and
application and limitation makes
all of us into great problem
solvers.
However, the pressure can get to
you at times. But whatever the
pressure, we must strive to stay
cool and balanced. We should
never allow the demon called
“Inferiority” to come near us.
Also, never compare yourself
with others. Try to improve
yourself and realize that everyone
has different abilities.
Coming to my own experience…
my first day at work was very
similar to my first day at college.
get to know the nuances of SQL.
For example, I am working on a
concept Jobs in SQL. Most of
you might have not heard of it
,google it and I am sure you will
find it interesting.
Don’t squander your time after
B.Tech! I am sure we all have a
gala time during student days,
but it’s also the time to do some
serious planning for the future.
Get involved in as many
activities as you can afford to.
Learn a language, write a blog,
attend a workshop or present a
paper. IT companies give you
many choices after training. You
may also be asked to join the
RMG (Resource Management
Group) which is like a HR job
or you may be asked to work
night shifts or you may be asked
to be the coordinator of a club.
There are innumerable
opportunities for self-growth.
Life in s/w industry will be good
if you make it good.
As the saying goes, “As you
sow, so shall you reap”.
Good luck! – Avinash Raman
The difference was that I was
now a productive employee so
I was treated with more respect.
We had an orientation to the
work environment, where I met
lot of business heads, Vice-
Presidents, Managers as well as
the CMD.
We enquired about the
company’s pillars and future
support. We were informed that
the most important quality the
organisation seeks to promote
among its employees is
creativity. Innovation will take
you places, my seniors advised.
If you are innovative, you will
be preferred over the others.
Hence, friends I suggest all of
you to keep updating yourselves
with latest technologies. When
you keep abreast of new
developments your creativity
will swell. I wish you all the
very best.
Dear
Write an essay
Win Prizes
Hurry up, students. You can
the subject “FDI in Retail
Trade” for students.
Students who are interested to
participate in the competition
can enroll themselves by
contacting Humanities cell.
before Dec 20. The competition
The issue is widely debated in
the media. You may access
some articles written on the
My favourite pages in our
VOICE are Potpourri. I go
through every line of these
two pages. Faces and Voices
is my all time favourite
feature because different
opinions on the same topic are
thought provoking and
leading me to think out of the
box in different dimensions.
The cover page design is
superb. I and my friends are
trying to create different kinds
of posters by using
‘Photoshop’. My dream
before leaving the campus is
to design cover page of the
magazine. ‘Interview of the
month’ gives us insights of
the learned and proven people
in inspiring our young and
ignited minds. Hence, my
overall impression on the
VOICE is excellent but it
needs regularity. My best
wishes to all young Editors.
