In the same way, any other symbol must be interpreted with care and be considered as<br />
evidence, not pro<strong>of</strong>. Among examples already given, the anchor may sometimes<br />
represent “hope” rather than a connection to the sea; and an old woman may be<br />
commemorated with a broken column by a loving family which simply felt she died<br />
too soon.<br />
