Officers’ message<br />
In <strong>2009</strong>, as the country faced continued uncertainties in the employment, housing and financial<br />
markets, we realized that the need to equip children with the tools for academic success has<br />
become more critical than ever before. With the support <strong>of</strong> many community partners, the<br />
<strong>Clubs</strong> opened four new literacy centers, tripling our capacity to help kids who struggle to keep<br />
up with their classmates in reading and writing.<br />
The <strong>Boys</strong> & <strong>Girls</strong> <strong>Clubs</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Portland</strong>’s campaign to increase youth literacy is one <strong>of</strong> many program<br />
components in our overall youth development strategy, which is designed to enable all young<br />
people to reach their full potential. Young people such as the six Youths <strong>of</strong> the Year featured<br />
in this report.<br />
Their stories remind us that it is crucial to continue our work on behalf <strong>of</strong> the kids who need us<br />
most. Their lives illustrate the powerful impact <strong>of</strong> a community that joins together to enable its<br />
most vulnerable members to remain optimistic in the face <strong>of</strong> difficult circumstances, determined<br />
to forge a positive and productive path.<br />
It is on their behalf, and on behalf <strong>of</strong> 20,000 kids impacted by the <strong>Boys</strong> & <strong>Girls</strong> <strong>Clubs</strong> each year,<br />
that we thank you for your investment in the future <strong>of</strong> our youth.<br />

Meyer Memorial Club Receives New Spaces<br />
More than 1,400 kids at the Meyer Club are benefiting from new program spaces made possible<br />
by the Estate <strong>of</strong> Thomas G. Elliott, the Ann & Bill Swindells Charitable Trust, the Larry & Jeanette<br />
Epping Family Foundation, and the Spirit Mountain Community Fund. 2,300 square feet were<br />
added to the Club, which now features a large performing arts room, and a fully furnished fitness<br />
center.<br />
The performing arts space is perfect for dance classes, aerobics, and small group activities.<br />
Teens love the new fitness center, which <strong>of</strong>fers a wide variety <strong>of</strong> weight training and exercise<br />
equipment. The adjoining administrative <strong>of</strong>fice received a much-needed renovation as well,<br />
with the addition <strong>of</strong> a pr<strong>of</strong>essional training center equipped with state-<strong>of</strong>-the-art audio visual<br />
technology that enables us to conduct interactive, hands-on staff training sessions.<br />
New Partnerships Enable Expansion <strong>of</strong> Literacy Program<br />
September <strong>2009</strong> marked an important occasion for the <strong>Boys</strong> & <strong>Girls</strong> <strong>Clubs</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Portland</strong>—the<br />
expansion <strong>of</strong> our literacy program from two sites serving 250 kids per year, to six sites serving<br />
more than 600 kids per year. Preparation for the expansion began in early <strong>2009</strong> with seven<br />
literacy staff members completing an intensive six-week certification training in the Slingerland<br />
Multisensory Approach, an instructional method targeted to the needs <strong>of</strong> dyslexic students and<br />
other struggling readers.<br />
All remaining full-time Club staff received an abbreviated version <strong>of</strong> the training over the<br />
summer, in order to ensure that the needs <strong>of</strong> these youth are being met in all program areas,<br />
not just in the literacy centers. By the fall, 4 new centers were open with significant support<br />
provided by the Quest Foundation, who purchased new computer workstations and s<strong>of</strong>tware,<br />
and iStation, who provided an online, interactive reading program <strong>of</strong>fering individualized lesson<br />
plans. The <strong>Clubs</strong> also continued with the next phase <strong>of</strong> our partnership with the University <strong>of</strong><br />
Oregon, who embarked on a two-year evaluation <strong>of</strong> the literacy program.<br />
<strong>Portland</strong> Showcase <strong>of</strong> Wine & Cheese Reaches New Milestone<br />
The Showcase <strong>of</strong> Wine & Cheese raised over $1 million in <strong>2009</strong>, the highest revenue in the event’s<br />
seven year history. Fred Meyer returned as the presenting sponsor, joined by Belgioioso Cheese,<br />
Young’s Columbia and thousands <strong>of</strong> outstanding corporate and individual sponsors and event<br />
attendees.<br />
The Showcase <strong>of</strong> Wine & Cheese is critical to our capacity to provide enriching activities at the<br />
low membership fee <strong>of</strong> only $5 per year, as it typically raises approximately 20% <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Clubs</strong>’<br />
annual operating budget. We are thankful for the continued support <strong>of</strong> our community and<br />
corporate sponsors, who have been highly instrumental in helping this event double its revenue<br />
to the <strong>Clubs</strong> over the past seven years.<br />

voters in 2002 and renewed in 2008, has<br />
funded YFS programs at the <strong>Portland</strong> <strong>Clubs</strong><br />
since 2004, and will continuing its funding for<br />
a minimum <strong>of</strong> three additional years.
