Welcome to the Raisin Social 

price list for 2010/2011 

Well, what interesting times we are living through. As we have been finalising our price list the, UK has its first peacetime 

coalition government for seventy years, a government which we hope will be able to improve the economic fortunes of the 

country. In challenging times such as these, quality and value for money are paramount and through working closely with our 

producer partners we are able to offer our finest selection of wines to date. 

Our South African range continues to go from strength to strength with award winning wines from Elgin Vintners, Kanonkop, La 

Motte and Neil Ellis, while brands like Beyerskloof, Leopards Leap and Namaqua continue to grow their loyal following in this 

market. Sileni offer Sauvignon Blanc from Hawke’s Bay as well as Marlborough, while their Merlot is proving to be a popular 

success, as is Shingleback Shiraz, while our Tipas wines from Argentina continue to offer some of the best value in the market. 

Also growing in popularity are the vinho verde’s from Quita da Aveleda, particularly that Portuguese icon Casal Garcia, better 

than ever as the brand celebrates its seventy first birthday. 

I would particularly like to draw your attention to some of our French wines, particularly 2009 Beaujolais from the finest vintage 

since 1947. Fleurie and Morgon from Louis Max are absolutely delicious and we are sure they will remind some customers how 

good the wines from this region can be, and we have also been particularly impressed with the Southern Rhone wines from 

Cairanne, and the award winning St.Chinian’s from Cave de Roquebrun.

Beyers Truter, known as the King of Pinotage for his pioneering work 

with the grape at the Kanonkop Estate, bought the small, perfectly 

situated farm now known as Beyerskloof in 1988. Since then his wine 

has become a benchmark for top quality Pinotage. 

While the reputation of his astonishingly good value Pinotage is well established, his Bordeaux blend Synergy, is also now one of 

the Cape’s most sought after reds, winning awards and acclaim worldwide.

Pinotage Rosé Sparkling 

This pale, coral pink sparkling wine displays crisp flavours of cherry, cranberry and strawberry 

with a hint of spice and floral notes and a fresh, clean, finish. 

Pinotage Rosé 

This deliciously fruity dry rosé is made by the saignée method. Crisp, fresh and filled with 

raspberry and cranberry fruit flavours, this makes ideal drinking on its own, or as a perfect 

accompaniment to summer salads and light Thai and Chinese foods. 

Pinotage 

This rich multi-faceted red is loaded with spicy fruit: silky, almost sweet ripe with soft tannins and a long finish. 

Pinotage Reserve 

A ripe, complex Pinotage with rich, sweet berry fruit flavours, a touch of spicy oak and a long, mineral finish. 

Synergy 

A blend of Merlot, Pinotage and Cabernet Sauvignon, aged in new French oak to produce a 

delicious, rich smooth red, drinkable now for its exuberant fruit, or after a few years bottle age. 

Synergy Reserve 

This wine, a Veritas double gold winner with its first release, has more Cabernet Sauvignon in 

the blend than the regular Synergy. Almost black in colour, the wine is rich and complex with 

aromas and flavours of black cherry, blackcurrant, chocolate and raisins, with a touch of oak 

for a long spicy finish. 

Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot - Presentation Box 2001 

A trophy winner in the Decanter World Wine Award 2006, this superb red is delicious now but 

will keep and improve for the next 5 or 10 years.

Kanonkop is one of the Cape’s oldest and most celebrated wine estates. Situated on the slopes of the Simonsberg 

near Stellenbosch, with an ideal climate and soil for red wine production, this family-owned winery produces wines of 

worldwide acclaim. 

Critical acclaim for the wines has resulted in a 

plethora of awards and medals, including a 

hat-trick at the International Wines and Spirits 

Challenge winning Winemaker of the Year 

2008, South African Wine Producer of the Year 

2008 and the Best Blended Wine trophy for the 

Kanonkop Paul Sauer 2003. A truly 

remarkable haul. 

Far from resting on their laurels however, 

winemaker Abri Beeselaar and the estate’s

A natural extension to the Kadette brand, and the first Rose to be produced by Kanonkop, it is 

a full bodied wine produced from ripe pinotage grapes boasting ripe, red fruits and floral

The de Villiers family of Landskroon has been making wine in South 

Africa for three centuries. Their Huguenot ancestor, Jacques de 

Villiers, who settled in the Cape with his two brothers in 1689, was 

a winemaker in Niort, France before emigrating to the Cape. 

The estate, one of the most beautiful in the Boland, nestles against 

the Agter-Paarl Mountain and offers an incomparable view of Table 

Mountain. Vines cover more than 180 hectares, 70% of which are 

red varietals. Of the white wines produced by Landskroon, the 

Chenin Blanc is extremely popular, with good ripe fruit flavours and 

well-balanced acidity. 

In recent years, Paul de Villiers’s ambition to produce top quality red 

wine has led to a large investment in the winery, with new stainless 

steel temperature controlled fermentation tanks, and new French oak 

barrels. Together with later-picked, ultra-ripe, new clone fruit, and 

techniques such as malolactic fermentation in barrel for red wines, 

the result has been a huge leap forward in quality, producing full, 

rich, ripe, fruit driven wines of international class. 

Renowned for its vintage port (for which Paul de Villiers was named 

Diners Club Winemaker of the Year in South Africa in 2000), 

Landskroon is now achieving acclaim for its table wines, particularly 

Shiraz and Merlot, while the 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon was given 

the best value award and four stars in Decanter’s March 2006 issue 

South African Cabernet Sauvignon tasting.

Pinotage 

A ripe, full-bodied red in typically approachable Landskroon style. Rich and supple with 

lots of smoky cherry fruit flavours. 

Merlot 

Soft, warm and inviting, with ripe fruitcake and berry aromas and flavours, supported by 

soft tannins and buttery oak. Super Merlot.

The Elgin Vintners is a partnership of 6 dedicated grape growers who, believing in

Agama 

Amaga is a blend of 71% Cabernet Sauvignon and 29% Merlot. Enticing aromas of caramel 

and spice with layers of plum, blackberries and cassis which carry through the palate. Soft 

velvet tannins, with hints of pepper and liquorice on the finish. Outstanding wine, drinking 

exceptionally well now. 


Powerful and refined aromas of bitter, dark chocolate, and coffee combined with black cherry 

and mulberry which follow through on the palate. The soft, rounded tannins give structure and 

compliment the fruit resulting in a perfectly balanced finish. This wine drinks exceptionally well 

now but will benefit from a year or two in a bottle. 

Merlot 

Delightful red berry fruits, cassis and violets on the nose with underlying mineral tones. The soft 

fruit follows onto the palate, unfolding rasberries, cherries and touches of chocolate. Supple, 

well integrated tannins deliver a velvety smooth mouthfeel and finish. This wine will benefit 

from further bottle maturation. 

Pinot Noir 

An elegant new world Pinot Noir, displaying beautifully defined red berry fruits, hints of orange 

peel on the nose and a rounded structure imparted by french oak with a lingering refined 

finish. Drinking exceptionally well now but will also benefit from a few years in the bottle. 

Rose 

A vibrant dry summer-fruit nose displaying strawberry, rasberry and cranberry. Delicate, yet 

juicy complexity of ripe fruit flavours and a lingering fruitful finish. The ideal wine summer and 

all year round.

Neil Ellis is considered to be one of the most talented winemakers 

in the Cape. Founded in 1986, Neil Ellis Wines has quickly built 

up an impressive reputation both domestically and internationally 

for producing seriously good wines. 

Neil Ellis Wines produce three distinct ranges. The Vineyard 

Selection wines are the top quality, limited release wines, which 

demonstrate the distinctiveness of hand-selected, specific 

vineyard sites. 

The Premium Range consists of wines for which grapes have been 

sourced from three quite different terroirs – Groenekloof, 

Stellenbosch and Elgin. Groenekloof, situated on the West Coast 

near Darling, is where Neil sources his Sauvignon Blanc grapes, 

where the sea breezes coming off the Atlantic help to create an 

ideal climate for growing this grape variety. 

The Stellenbosch Premium range wines are also very special. 

Consistently scoring highly in the John Platter guide, these wines 

are beautifully made, the Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon 

being the stars. Finely balanced and well proportioned, the 

quality of the Cabernet means that it can be enjoyed as a 

youngster now, or allowed to mature for a few years into an 

exceptional wine. 

Neil’s Elgin Chardonnay is an interesting contrast to the 

Stellenbosch wine. Situated high up in the mountains behind 

Somerset West, Elgin’s cooler, slower ripening climate makes for 

a subtle, elegant wine of real class.

Vineyard Selection Shiraz 

Winner of a double gold in the SA Veritas awards 2001, this is yet another of Neil’s wines to 

find that magical balance of power and elegance. Rich, ripe red and black fruit aromas and 

flavours combine with spicy new oak, to give a long and complex finish. Delicious now, it will 

be fantastic in a year or two. 

Vineyard Selection Cabernet 

“A classic in a classic year...deep dark-berry, cedar-oak aromas, taut minerally 

mouthfeel...cool, sophisticated” 


Cabernet / Merlot 

Soft, ripe berry fruit flavours, are the main feature of this rich, approachable red, balanced by 

Neil’s trademark elegance and by oak and mineral complexity.

Groenekloof Sauvignon Blanc 

“Announcing its refreshing aromatic presence, floral and herbaceous notes give way to a

Elgin Chardonnay 

Made from fruit grown on the cool slopes of the Elgin region, this rich, complex white beautifully 

combines toasty oak, with rich pineapple and creamy butterscotch flavours. One of the Cape’s 

best Chardonnays. 

Stellenbosch Chardonnay 

Crisp elegant Chardonnay with lifted citrus notes and a hint of butterscotch. Sublime. 

Sincerely Sauvignon Blanc 

Racy, zesty and packed full of lively gooseberry and nettley aromas. The palate shows fresh, 

tangy tangerine and tropical fruit. Delicious!

Van Loveren is a 220 hectare Estate situated alongside the Breede River near the town of 

Robertson, almost 100 miles inland from Cape Town. It has been in the Retief family for over 

three generations, with cousins Bussell, Hennie, Neil and Phillip currently leading the Van 

Loveren team. In recent years major investment in the winery has resulted in one of the most 

modern cellars in the Robertson area with a total capacity of 3000 tons. 

The vineyards are irrigated for six months of the year. The unique soil type, with its high 

limestone and chalk content, makes the Robertson area ideal for the production of noble white 

and red varietals. In 1992 several red varieties were planted, and recently the farm has 

expanded further, with another 50 hectares of new red vines. 

The uniqueness of these wines lies in the consistent high 

quality, which is a result of the talented and professional 

winemaking team of Bussell and Phillip Retief.

Gorgeous white, showing the spicy rose petal aromas and lychee flavours of the grape. 

Sweet, but beautifully balanced, this wine is never cloying. 

Sauvignon Blanc 

A bright, zesty white wine combining citrus and tropical fruit flavours with a crisp, green pepper 

and gooseberry core. 

Chardonnay 

A fresh, ripe, fruity Chardonnay with flavours of apples and lemon and a slightly nutty finish. 

Pinot Grigio 

A bright fruity wine displaying hints of tropical fruit and honey, well balanced with a crisp ripe

Cabernet Sauvignon / Shiraz 

A lightly oaked wine with smokey, raspberry Shiraz character and the ripe, soft fruitiness that is 

the hallmark of the Van Loveren reds. 

Merlot 

Lightly oaked nose combining soft strawberry, plum and cherries leading to a soft fruity palate 

with fine supple tannins. 

Pinotage 

Demonstrating an array of aromas and flavours from the varietal, ripe banana, figs and 

summer fruits are all evident on the nose and palate. Soft, fine tannins ensure a smooth finish. 

River Red 

An unoaked red for everyday quaffing; soft, balanced fruit and full of juicy berry flavours. 

Blanc de Noir Rosé 

“Its clean, fruity, palest pink shade is good value… and will work well served cold with spicy

Established in 1695, La Motte is situated in South Africa’s 

picturesque Franschhoek Valley. In 1970 the industrialist Dr 

Anton Rupert bought the property with the aim of establishing 

a premium wine-producing enterprise. The vineyards were 

progressively replanted with noble cultivars, and an 

impressive modern cellar complex was built reflecting the 

innovative spirit. 

The estate is now owned by Dr Rupert’s daughter, Hanneli, 

who is one of South Africa’s leading mezzo-sopranos. The 

wine-making team is headed by her husband Hein 

Koegelenberg, assisted by viticulturist Pietie le Roux and cellar 

master Edmund Terblanche with his new assistant Werner 

Geldenhuys. 

Since the arrival of Edmund, which coincided with the 

decision to de-classsify La Motte as an estate wine, new 

sources of fruit from regions such as Darling, Durbanville, Bot 

River and Elim, combined with newer plantings at La Motte, 

have pushed the whole La Motte range to a new, higher level 

of richness and excitement. One of the oldest wineries in 

South Africa is now fighting with the newcomers to be one of 

the producers to watch for the South African cognoscenti.

Beautiful citrus flavours with a rich creamy aftertaste. Full style with an exceptionally long

Shiraz Viognier 

A rich, supple wine which combines the concentrated berry fruit and spice of Shiraz with the 

floral character of Viognier to produce a complex silky red. 

Millennium 

Blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. A deep crimson colour with well 

balanced mineral flavours and complex bouquet of blackberries, chocolate and peppery 

spice. A delicious, fully mature claret style. 


A bouquet of ripe blackberry with tobacco aroma and good mid-palate concentration. 

Prominent dark chocolate and earthy mushroom flavours. Deep colour. 

Shiraz 

Full bodied, with deep violet colour and classic spicy, pepper liquorice flavours. Long,

Ormonde Estate is a large wine farm on South Africa’s cool west coast, some 70 kilometres 

north of Cape Town. Here Theo Basson controls the largest vineyard of quality Sauvignon 

Blanc in the Cape, as well as producing excellent, characterful Merlot, Chardonnay, Chenin 

Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon. 

For many years Theo supplied fruit to some of South African wine’s biggest names, but for 

several vintages he has used a growing proportion of those grapes to make wines for his 

own label, Alexanderfontein, the name of one of the original farms which are now 

incorporatated in Ormonde Estate.

winemakers to develop fresh, new, modern styles with quality and

Located among the beautiful and dramatic scenery of the Haut Languedoc National Park, the Cave 

de Roquebrun lies at the heart of the St Chinian appellation, north of the town of Beziers. 

Established in 1968, the Cave represents 110 members who farm over 500 hectares of vines

Demessey Macon Cruzille Les Avouries 2005 is produced at Chateau De Messey, an ancient wine 

estate near Tournus in southern Burgundy, where the origins of the property date back to the 9th 

century AD. 

Grapes from the surrounding vineyards are hand harvested at optimum ripeness, then fermented in 

a combination of new and used French oak barrels, using very traditional techniques. The resulting 

wine is a classic expression of Burgundy, a style which producers of Chardonnay the world over have 

tried to imitate, but which most are unable to replicate because they lack the unique soils and 

microclimates which make certain white Burgundies the 

most sought after white wines in the world. 


Macon Cruzille 

This wine, from the fabulous 2005 vintage combines 

richness and power with crisp, fresh acidity and minerality 

which act to give balance and elegance to flavours of 

citrus fruit, salty butter, and creamy, oatmeal flavours.

The village of Cairanne in the southern Rhone Valley is one of the 16 permitted to use the village name for 

its production of the Cotes du Rhone villages, and its wines are renowned for their quality and value. 

Created in 1929, the Cave de Cairanne now represents some 200 growers, controlling 1200 hectares, 

80% of the appellation. 

Maison Louis Max is a producer of wines from its own vineyards as well as a Négociant-Eleveur, having 

bought the beautiful Domaine de la Marche estate in Mercurey, with 67 acres of prime vineyard sites in the 

Mercurey and Mercurey 1er Cru appelations. 


Located in the small town of Rivesaltes close to Perpignan in 

Southern France, winemaker Pierrick Harang continues the family 

passion and drive stemming back five generations of wine merchants 

and oenologists.

Shingleback is a family-owned wine estate handcrafting rich, fruit-forward Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, 

Chardonnay, Rosé and Grenache from South Australia’s premier growing region, the McLaren Vale. They 

utilize innovative canopy management and progressive farming techniques to produce wines of exceptional 

quality and character. 

The wines are the pride of John Davey, a veteran Australian winemaker, who has worked throughout the 

Barossa Valley, Langhorne Creek and Yarra Valley as well as the McLaren Vale since the early 1990s. He and 

his brother Kym co-manage the family's Davey Family Vineyard. "When you own your own vineyard and make 

your own wines, you manage the site right down to the individual vine," John Davey explains. "I select the 

best blocks for our wines, then pick them at the precise moment both sugars and flavours are mature. With 

the right fruit, minimal handling is required and the character of the growing region and the grape shines 

through." 

Shingleback was short listed for Australian Producer of the Year in the IWSC 2006, and won the prestigious Jimmy Watson Trophy for best

Sileni Estates was born from the long standing interest in wine of Graeme Avery, a pharmaceutical scientist and former owner of medical 

publishing company Adis International. In late 1997, along with financial director Chris Cowper and winemaker Grant Edmonds, he 

established Sileni as an export-orientated producer committed to crafting world-class fine wines. 

The winery is named after the Sileni who featured in Roman mythology alongside Bacchus, the God of Wine. They celebrated good wine, 

good food and good company. 

The vineyards and winery are based near Hastings, Hawke’s Bay, on the east coast of the North Island of New Zealand. It has a southern 

latitude of 39° and a climate similar to that of some of the great wine regions of the world. 

The 2005 International Wine Challenge rewarded the tremendous quality Sileni’s wines with 

3 trophies for the 2004 Sauvignon Blanc.

Swartland Winery is situated just outside Malmesbury, a town 

established in 1827 and named after the Governor of the 

Cape's father-in-law, the Earl of Malmesbury. The area 

surrounding the town was (and still is) very much a farming 

community, renowned for its wheat, sheep and vine 

cultivation. In 1948, 15 farmers joined forces and founded 

their own cellar for wine production. Today, the co-operative 

has 100 members, with an area of 3100 hectares under vine, 

crushing approximately 25,000 tonnes of grapes each 

harvest. 

Viticulture & Vinification 

The Swartland region (Swartland meaning “black soil”) is an 

open, undulating area north of the Cape, with fertile soil 

fanned by cool Atlantic breezes (the coast is only 30km away). 

As much as 85% of the land farmed by Swartland members is 

planted with bush vines, giving a low average yield of 7 

tonnes of grapes a hectare. 

The result is smaller berries with extremely good fruit 

concentration, enabling Swartland Winery to produce large 

volumes of single varietal wines to an exceptionally high 

quality. Another important factor, which further secures the 

high quality of Swartland's wines, is the top specification 

bottling line on site, enabling the winemaking team are able 

to supervise all aspects of the vinification through to the 

finished product. 

A strength of Swartland has been their willingness to invest in 

wine quality for the future. Major projects include a huge 

investment in the wine cellar to separate red and white into 

new state-of-the-art facilities and a new, premium oak barrel 

cellar. 


Cape Collection Chenin Blanc 

Typical tropical guava flavours supported by passion fruit and underlying citrus 

blossom flavours. The wine is full and rich on the palate with a crisp finish.
