2009); it is a four day carnival celebrating <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> annual harvest. According to legend Mahabali, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> legendary King <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Kerala</str<strong>on</strong>g>,<br />

visits <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>state</str<strong>on</strong>g> every year <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> first day <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Onam</str<strong>on</strong>g>, to ensure <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> wellbeing <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> people. He is welcomed to his kingdom with<br />

reverence homes are spruced up and intricate decorati<strong>on</strong>s with 'rangolis' (designs with coloured powders) and 'pookkalam'<br />

(designs with flowers petals) and festivities start with Maveli Puja or prayer to Mahabali, celebrati<strong>on</strong>s c<strong>on</strong>tinue over <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> next<br />

few days in form <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Pulikali or Tiger dance processi<strong>on</strong>s and Vallamkali or boat races. Locati<strong>on</strong> – Thiruvanthapuram<br />

Pulikali (Tiger dance) (this year falling <strong>on</strong> 04 September 2009) artists perform <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> centuries old folk dance many teams from<br />

different municipalities and villages take part in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> event. Each <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> team has 61 members, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y paint <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir bodies<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>mselves in likeness <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> tigers and wear tiger mask. They dance and pounce like a tiger hunting. The tigers dance to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

accompanying drummer and are also chased by a designated hunter. The dance celebrates <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> might & courage <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a forest<br />

Aranmula Boat race based around <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> 1700 hundred years old Aranmula Sree Parthasarathy temple <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> river Pampa is<br />

part <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Onam</str<strong>on</strong>g> celebrati<strong>on</strong>s. Like all temple <str<strong>on</strong>g>festival</str<strong>on</strong>g>s this too is elaborate and earlier comprised <strong>on</strong>ly <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> boat processi<strong>on</strong><br />

around <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> temple, over <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> centuries <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> boats-men started competing with each o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> boat races came into<br />

existence. Keeping with traditi<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong>ly men <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> local villages are allowed in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> boat, slippers and modern clothing are not<br />

allowed. Participants are <strong>on</strong>ly allowed to wear a traditi<strong>on</strong>al white mundu & head turban while <strong>on</strong> board. On <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> fourth day after<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Onam</str<strong>on</strong>g> (this year falling <strong>on</strong> 06 September 2009) <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ga<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>red boat-men take out a boat processi<strong>on</strong> in fr<strong>on</strong>t <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> temple and in<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> afterno<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y compete with each o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r in boat races. Locati<strong>on</strong> – Aranmula.<br />

DAY 01, Tuesday, 01 Sep’09: Arrive TRIVANDRUM<br />

Arrive at Trivandrum Internati<strong>on</strong>al airport; transfer to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> hotel by our local representative, Thiruvananthapuram, previously<br />

called Trivandrum, is an ancient city dating back to 1000 BC. Thiruvananthapuram became <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

capital <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Raja <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Travancore in 1750. The name is derived from 'Tiru Ananta Puram', <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> abode <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Sacred serpent Ananta, up<strong>on</strong> whose coils Vishnu lies in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> main temple. One <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> many<br />

reas<strong>on</strong>s due to which <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> city is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Capital <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> modern <str<strong>on</strong>g>state</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Kerala</str<strong>on</strong>g> in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Indian Republic. with various cultural performances. Later return to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> hotel for over-night stay.<br />

DAY 02, Wednesday, 02 Sep’09: IN TRIVANDRUM<br />

After breakfast this morning start <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> city tour <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Trivandrum, witness <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> celebrati<strong>on</strong>s in and around <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Padmanabhaswamy<br />

temple and rest <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> city Later in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> afterno<strong>on</strong> drive to a nearby village participate in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Onam</str<strong>on</strong>g> celebrati<strong>on</strong> & feast with<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m, later return to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> hotel for over-night stay.<br />

Day 3, Thursday, 03 Sep’09: TRIVNDRUM - TRISSUR<br />

After an breakfast drive to Trissur (290kms / 8 hours drive), take frequent pit-stops & photo stops<br />

to soak in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> green & lush country side <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> God’s own country, up<strong>on</strong> arrival check-in at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> hotel<br />

with rest <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> day is at leisure. Stay overnight at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> hotel.<br />

Day 4, Friday, 04 Sep’09: IN TRISSUR<br />

After breakfast <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> day is at leisure to explore this small temple town <strong>on</strong> your own , later in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

afterno<strong>on</strong> arrive at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Swaraj Ground see <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> "Pulikali" or Tiger Dance, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> adventurous can<br />

even have tiger stripes painted <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir faces to join in with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> spirit <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> fun & festivity, for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> less<br />

adventurous masks are always available. Later return to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> hotel for overnight stay.<br />

Day 5, Saturday, 05 Sep’09: TRISSUR – KOCHI<br />

After breakfast drive to Kochi (80 Kms / 2hour drive), with its wealth <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> historical associati<strong>on</strong>s and its beautiful setting <strong>on</strong> a<br />

cluster <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> islands and narrow peninsulas, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> fascinating city <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Cochin perfectly reflects <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> eclecticism <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Kerala</str<strong>on</strong>g>. Previously<br />

named Cochin, it boasts <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> finest natural harbours <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Arabian Sea coast and has been a port <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> call for foreign<br />

After breakfast transfer to Aranmula Village (132kms / 04 hours drive), Enroute take a pit-stop at<br />

Chenganacherry Town, here <strong>on</strong>e can immerse <strong>on</strong>eself in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> rural setting. Later c<strong>on</strong>tinue<br />

<strong>on</strong>wards to Aranmula. Aranmula is not <strong>on</strong>ly <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> birthplace <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> traditi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> boat races in <str<strong>on</strong>g>Kerala</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

but also <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> place from where <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> war boats <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Kerala</str<strong>on</strong>g> took birth and became established in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
