Ditchling History Project members will try to help you discover the answers to your questions. We have village census returns, parish registers and a mass of other data on-line to help you research the answers. Maybe we can learn from you too and if you have any photos or documentation you're prepared to show us bring them along. Why not come to our drop-in centre in the White Horse Restaurant every second Wednesday afternoon of the month, the next one being Wednesday August 14 th from 2 to 5pm? You will be very welcome. Tom Dufty 60s Music Evening in Ditchling Saturday October 26, 7.30pm, Ditchling Village Hall Following the last four years’ sell-out 60s music discos in Ditchling Village Hall, we are repeating the event on October 26 featuring, as before, a top Brighton DJ and all those great bands of the 60s decade. You can dance to the Rolling Stones, Beatles, Kinks, Supremes, Manfred Mann and all your favourites and help raise money for a wildlife charity (see below) at the same time. Tickets cost the same as the last two years, just £12, including light refreshments. A well-stocked bar will be available, but you can bring your own drinks if you prefer. As numbers are strictly limited, it is advisable to book your 32
tickets early to avoid being disappointed, which unfortunately happens to some people every year due to the popularity of this event. Tickets are available from August 1 st at Ditchling Post Office and Parkers in Ditchling High Street or by phoning 01273 845361. NO TICKETS WILL BE AVAILABLE ON THE DOOR. The charity which will benefit is Fauna & Flora International (reg charity 1011102), backed by Sir David Attenborough and under the patronage of HM the Queen. Last year we raised £2800 (comprising £1,400 proceeds of the disco plus match funding from a commercial concern) to help the critically endangered Mountain Gorillas of East Africa. Only 780 of these gentle and charismatic apes remain and our funding last year has helped their continued survival. This year’s proceeds will again help threatened primates and more details of the project we’ve selected will be available soon. Make sure you get ‘Satisfaction’ by getting your ticket early – don’t risk turning ‘A Whiter Shade of Pale’ by leaving it too late! Sylvia Bain The Sussex Historic Churches Trust Annual Ride & Stride The Sussex Historic Churches Trust, which gives grants for repairs and conservation work to the many historic churches in the county, including those in our own parish, raises funds through the annual sponsored Bike and Stride event which this year takes place on Saturday September 14 th . If you would like to take part as a walker or cyclist, individually or as a group, please get in touch with me for details including lists of open churches. This is a great opportunity to enjoy the lovely Sussex countryside and at the same time to discover interesting churches in scenic locations. Alternatively you might offer help on the day by welcoming and refreshing visitors to our churches and be sponsored in this way. All money raised will be shared equally between the Sussex Historic Churches Trust and a church of your choice.
