Alice Hyde’s Loving Legacy
Alice Hyde Medical Center
2008 Annual Report
2008
1910
During
In 1910, Clark J. Lawrence generously offered $25,000 to the
Malone Hospital Association on the condition that the
organization name the community hospital in memory of his
niece, Alice Hyde. Since that time, nearly 100 years ago, the
Alice Hyde Medical Center family has continued the loving
legacy that began with naming the hospital for a woman who
was dearly beloved and known for her selfless thoughts and
actions, often performed anonymously.
In correspondence from the time of Alice's life, she was
regarded as a woman of courage and determination who was
“one of Malone's most capable and beloved young women.”
Perhaps one of her defining attributes was that she was
“gracious and cheerful in disposition, thinking little of self
and much of the comfort and happiness of others.”
2008, Alice Hyde Medical Center
Expanded dental services to meet burgeoning
community needs
Health experts have long known that good oral health is
key to ensuring overall health and well-being in people of
all ages. As part of our ongoing commitment to meeting
community needs, the Medical Center recruited an
additional dentist and expanded its hours of service.
Acquired state-of-the-art EKG capabilities
Keeping pace with ever-evolving technology is critical for
ensuring correct diagnosis and treatment of cardiac
conditions. The Medical Center is proud to offer our
community the most state-of-the-art monitoring and
assessment tools available today.
Added new dialysis machines to accommodate more
community members
As caregivers, we are acutely aware of the importance of
making treatment offerings as convenient as possible for
patients. For this reason, the Medical Center has devoted
resources to expanding our number of dialysis
machines—not only enabling us to treat more patients, but
provide a broader range of availability for all in need of
these services.
Today these values live on as Alice's Loving Legacy and are
demonstrated each and every day in the work that we do and
the lives that we touch. This year's annual report is devoted
to those who personally carry on this legacy by supporting
the Alice Hyde Medical Center – one of our most vital and
cherished community assets. Whether a volunteer,
employee, physician, patient, resident or family member,
donor, or community member, we all share a part in
preserving and strengthening Alice Hyde's enduring legacy of
caring and serving.
We have a vacant chair that can never be filled, but the beautiful spirit to whom it belonged
has left us a precious legacy—such a lesson of love, fortitude, and high courage of life so near
perfect….The touch of her hand was a token of truest friendship, her presence a rare
privilege—her memory will be with us always.
John W. Johnson
President/CEO
Gerald Rufa
Chair, Board of Directors
These words were spoken by Mrs. Mary Putnam, of the Adirondack Chapter of the
Daughters of the American Revolution, upon the death of Alice Hyde. We are proud and
honored to be part of the Medical Center that bears her name, and continues her loving
legacy.
We sometimes pause and wonder what the world must have been like a century ago when
Alice Hyde was an integral part of the Malone community. Times have certainly changed
since 1910—life expectancy has risen dramatically, new drugs and ever-evolving
technology have given us the ability to prolong and improve the quality of life, and we can
now diagnose and treat diseases that were unheard of 100 years ago.
During its history, the Medical Center has survived and thrived through periods of
economic distress, as well as times of prosperity, and through it all, the Alice Hyde Medical
Center family has remained stalwart in its dedication to carrying forth the selfless legacy of
our namesake.
Today's economic uncertainty has certainly challenged Alice Hyde Medical Center and
medical institutions around the country. It has shaken our fiscal foundation but has not
dampened our steadfast resolve to continue caring for and serving Malone and the
surrounding communities with the same compassion and dedication that community
members have come to expect and trust.
In many ways, our current challenges have provided an opportunity for us to pause, take
notice, and remember what is important about our lives. We have been deeply moved by
the support of all members of the Alice Hyde Medical Center family who gave in some way
during the past year—whether through contributions of time or money, by holding a hand,
hosting a program, participating in a program, joining us for the health fair, volunteering,
calling or visiting legislators, or dedicating their life’s work to our shared mission. The
active and involved engagement of all—employees, physicians, Board of Directors,
volunteers, patients and families, residents, and community members—have made a true
and palpable difference in sustaining our community's precious healthcare resource.
We take this opportunity to express our sincere appreciation to each and every person who
has played a part in keeping Alice Hyde's loving legacy alive.
John W. Johnson
E
Each year, it is tradition that the Medical Staff President reflects on the previous year's
achievements and shares the perspective of the physicians serving our community. Once
again, we were privileged and honored to work with all members of the Alice Hyde
Medical Center family—from health professionals, to volunteers, the Board of Directors,
and community members—as we work in partnership to enhance the care we provide to
those who live in our communities. I extend my appreciation for the support,
collaboration, and commitment to working together as we strive to meet our community's
dynamic health care needs.
We are all aware of the impact that the current economic tumult is having on Alice Hyde
Medical Center and institutions like ours across around the country. Yet, it has not
impacted our commitment to advance medicine and technology. In fact, in 2008, we made
significant advances in the areas of urology and primary care and continue to bring cutting
edge technology to our community. Our medical services also expanded with the addition
of six new physicians who bring notable expertise to our team and enhance the medical
diversity in our community.
Rajiv Shah, MD
Medical Staff President
Turning to 2009, we are looking forward to building on our past successes and playing a
partnership role in the continued growth and evolution of AHMC. Some of the initiatives
on the drawing board are expanding primary care services with the addition of new
physicians; bringing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in-house; considering engaging
hospitalists to provide even more timely and consistent medical care to inpatients;
broadening the array of services delivered locally; and, in partnership with Fletcher Allen
Health Care, strengthening our cardiology and nephrology programs.
MMany community members volunteer their time and talents to
Alice Hyde Medical Center—and each plays a valuable and
unique role in meeting community needs.
The AHMC Board of Directors is an exemplary group of
community-minded individuals who generously give of their
time throughout the year. They help guide the organization in
meeting its mission, share their expertise in countless areas,
such as finance and strategic planning, and help to ensure the
continued viability and vibrancy of Alice Hyde Medical Center.
There is not enough that can be said for the extra benefit
patients and families derive from the comforting presence of
our volunteers. Hospital volunteers are an integral part of the
AHMC family and our approach to care—in 2008, our
dedicated core of volunteers gave more than 17,406 hours in
service to Alice Hyde. Our volunteers provide a range of
services for our patients, residents, and their families to further
AHMC’s broader mission, and they offer social support
companionship, and respite time for caregivers and family
members.
The AHMC Auxiliary members are part of our volunteer corps
and they also conducted many fundraising programs to help
support the purchase of new equipment, enable updating of key
areas of the Medical Center, and allow expansion of services
needed by the community. In 2008, the Auxiliary raised more
than $45,813, the largest amount to date, for the purchase of
equipment in six departments, including biphasic defibrillators
for Ambulatory Surgery and the Emergency Department, a
ceiling exam light for the Family Maternity Center, two E-Z Lift
Beds for the Medical/Surgical Floor, an infusion pump and infloor
scale for the Wade and Marjorie Hastings Dialysis Unit,
and a blanket warmer for the ICU.
Given the real and growing threat of state and federal budget
cuts, all volunteers—regardless of role and function at
AHMC—actively engaged in advocacy initiatives to halt
proposed cuts and restore the funds needed to meet growing
community needs.
T
The Alice Hyde Medical Center is more than bricks and
mortar—it is the caring and devotion offered each and
every day by our dedicated employees. Our employees
are the heart and soul of the Medical Center and take
pride in helping to fulfill our mission of providing quality
healthcare to the community.
Whether working as a manager, nurse, housekeeper,
dietary aide, technician, or an accounting specialist, the
Alice Hyde Medical Center employees put the “care” in
“caregiving.” Each and every employee goes beyond the
requirements of the “job,” participating in volunteer
initiatives that serve our neighbors – advocating for
funding to preserve and build the Medical Center,
strengthening skills and knowledge through continuing
education, and continually striving to improve the quality
of care and comfort for our patients, residents, families,
and community.
None is more dedicated than longtime President and
CEO, John Johnson, who has graciously agreed to
continue leading the organization for another 3 years.
Under his leadership, AHMC has grown in both its
physical size and spectrum of services offered, earning a
reputation as one of the finest health care institutions in
the North Country. The Board of Directors, employees,
and larger community are delighted that he will remain in
this important role. His insight and leadership will be
invaluable in guiding AHMC through these challenging
times.
AHMC would not have had the long-term success
it has without the loyal support – monetary and
otherwise - of its community, and the patients and
families who reside in it. As an expression of
gratitude and acknowledgement of this, the
Medical Center has, each year, endeavored to
expand its offering of programs and services well
beyond the walls of the institution.
A key event for encouraging healthier lifestyles is
our triennial Health Fair, which was attended by a
record number of community members. This was
just one of the many events, programs, and
initiatives designed to foster better lifestyle habits
and improve the overall health of our community.
Other notable events and initiatives during 2008
included:
The creation of a Family Resource Center to
provide credible, reliable information to our
patients and their families
Nearly 5,000 community members attending
112 In Touch with Health programs
Partnerships with schools to reinforce healthy
living
New Visions program and CampMed to help
cultivate tomorrow's health care workforce
Ask Me 3 initiative to engage our patients and
families in our mission to provide the safest
care possible
Donors:
Alice Hyde Medical Center is extremely fortunate to have a
giving, caring community that supports us with gifts of time
and funds. Community donations and support are important
now more than ever given the current economic climate. And,
our community was particularly generous this year—Alice
Hyde Medical Center benefited from over 213,000 in
community contributions. Your annual gifts provide essential
funding for Medical Center projects including the newly
installed Fetal Central Monitoring System for our Family
Maternity Center.
More than 1,200 people—a record turnout—attended the
Winterfest ski benefit and the annual benefit golf tournament
was again a rousing success.
Our heartfelt thanks to all those who were part of Alice Hyde's
Loving Legacy Philanthropy campaign and to everyone who
invests in AHMC; if you golf, ski, donate monies, make a
stock gift, or include us in your will, we are grateful for your
involvement and generosity.
AHMC's Medical Staff members are
intimately involved in carrying forth
our mission of service to our
community. As clinicians they each
understand and embody the six
qualities essential for success, which
are so important in gaining and
maintaining the confidence and
trust of our patients and their
families. These dedicated
professionals continually strive to
enlist patients as partners in
wellness, serving them with
compassion, and devoting their
professional lives to alleviating
suffering.
* Medical Executive Committee
Equally critical to their success is
their passion for staying at the
forefront of their respective fields.
They devote many hours of
personal time to acquiring
continuing education in diagnosis
and treatment, in an effort to better
serve the needs of patients.
During 2008, AHMC was proud to
welcome six new physicians to our
organization who each bring a
unique mix of skills, talent and
diversity to our care team.
