Guest Speaker: Mr. Gareth Brady
Gareth Brady is Chief Executive of Hughes Insurance, the
largest independent insurance broker in Northern
Ireland.
Since graduating from Queen’s University Belfast, Gareth
initially trained as a Chartered Accountant with Ernst &
Young. His specialism was corporate finance, which
included advising clients on buying and selling
businesses. This role involved significant travel
throughout Ireland, the UK and Europe.
Using this experience he then joined Open + Direct
Group in 2000 to assist them in buying a number of
financial services companies throughout the UK. From
instigating the purchase of these businesses Gareth
moved on to become the Managing Director of the
insurance division of Open + Direct, responsible for
approximately £100 million of turnover and 300 people.
This included a Northern Ireland based insurance
business and a specialist insurance broker outside
Birmingham.
Then in 2002, Gareth and his fellow directors took the
opportunity to buy Open + Direct from its owner Viridian
Group PLC (or NIE as it was previously known). Funding
was secured from Alchemy Partners, a firm of venture
capitalists. Their management buyout, valued at £111
million, was described as the largest ever undertaken in
Northern Ireland.
Having sold Open + Direct in 2007, Gareth was keen to
find another opportunity in the insurance sector.
Accordingly in January 2008, he completed a
management buy in to Hughes Insurance.
Gareth attended the Abbey from 1984 to 1991 and
completed A levels in Economics, Maths and Physics. He
completed his BSc (Hons) Accounting in QUB in 1994 and
then, having completed his professional exams, was
admitted to the Institute of Chartered Accountants in
Ireland in 1998.
Gareth is a native of Newry and includes football and golf
as his hobbies. He freely admits that the standard of both
has dropped significantly since his school days. He is
married to Sharon and they have a four-year-old daughter
and a seven-month-old son.
