Welcome to The Chatterbox
Winter 2012-2013 Edition.
First of all, I would
like to thank you all for an amazing summer and fall (so far).
The attendance at events and programs has never been better. We
enjoyed another great season of summer camps at Cool Creek Park,
a record breaking camping season at White River Campground, a
very successful inaugural Twilight Trail Run & Walk and an equally
successful (and re-tooled) Archaeology Month Program, which
featured demonstrations of a dugout canoe, bent pole structure construction, cattail mat-making,
and archaeology of food. This quality programming was offered in spite of contending with a
major draught, overwhelming heat, a week with 6 inches of rain, and an unseasonably cool start
to the fall. (Just another season in Indiana.) This is when and where I have historically taken time
on the soap box to talk about winter recreation, how much I enjoy winter recreation, and how
much I feel like it is under-utilized. You’ve heard this enough from me, so I am going to turn
the tables. I am asking all of you to log on to our facebook page and tell me (and everyone else)
what your favorite winter outdoor recreation activity is. I am looking for some diversity of
answers. I really don’t want to see 1,000 posts on sledding. Speaking of sledding (or tubing)
and staying with a winter theme, work is progressing on our new tubing hill at Strawtown
Koteewi Park. We hope to have it open for the 2013-2014 winter season. We have also
broken ground on the new archery facility. Even going through difficult economic
times, we are managing to keep working to make your community a better place to
live. Stay tuned for more great news to come!
See you in the parks!
Winter Fun at HCPR
The Northern Cardinal is loved
by many, which is evident by the
fact that it is the state bird for
seven different states. The oldest
cardinal ever recorded was 15
years and 9 months old.
The beautiful red feathers of
male Cardinals are the result
of the bird’s diet. The male
Cardinal metabolizes carotenoid
pigments present in the food
they eat, like Dogwood and
Grapevine berries. A very bright
Cardinal has been eating good
sources of these yellow and red
pigments; dull male cardinals
have been eating poor sources
of the pigment.
Far too often we get cabin fever throughout the winter months
here in Indiana, but I am here to tell you it doesn’t have to be so.
Winter is one of the very best times of the year to come out to
the parks and experience new nature fun. An early winter hike
can yield an abundance of wildlife viewing opportunities; I love
to watch the squirrels gathering and storing food for the winter.
Taking a hike after a fresh snow is one of the most peaceful
activities you can do.
Our parks are much less crowded during this time of year, so if
solitude is what you crave, there is a trail with your name on it.
Animal activity is easier to track after a snow fall too. Bring the
kids out to the parks and find that den belonging to the squirrel
you watched gather nuts this fall. Of course don’t forget to visit
our indoor facilities like Cool Creek Nature Center and Taylor
Center of Natural History. Hope to see you on the trails
this winter!!!
-Bruce Oldham, Regional Parks Operations Manager
The heat produced from Skunk Cabbage can
be 16 to 60 degrees warmer than the ambient
air which causes the surrounding snow to
melt. You can find this plant blooming at
Strawtown Koteewi Park in late winter.
AmeriCorps NCCC - In Our Parks and Our Hearts
Representatives of two AmeriCorps NCCC (National
Civilian Community Corps) teams have been working
diligently to improve grounds, facilities and green space
within our county park system this past year. AmeriCorps
NCCC is a federally administered, full-time, team-based
residential service program. The teams designated – Maple 2
and Cedar 1 sent to Hamilton County were comprised of nine
and eleven members, respectively. The members, aged 18-24
devote ten months of their lives to providing communitybased
service across the United States. Hamilton County
Parks and Recreation was fortunate enough to sponsor both
of these hard-working, dedicated teams in 2012.
In addition to removing thousands of pounds of threatening
invasive plant species in the parks, the teams assisted in
a variety of key planting, maintenance and construction
projects. They were active in assisting and participating in
several community events – including Race Across Hamilton
County, Park(ing) Day, Archaeology Month and the popular
Haunted Trails at Cool Creek Park.
Beyond the tasks they performed tirelessly for the county
parks, the members elected to assist numerous local civic
organizations through their Independent Service Program,
including the 4H, Kiwanis, Habitat for Humanity, Nickel
Plate Arts, The Hamilton County Humane
Society and several other organizations. Their
efforts represented savings to taxpayers of tens of
thousands of dollars. Due to limited resources,
many of the projects undertaken by these young
adults might not have been addressed in a timely
manner…if at all!
To the members of AmeriCorps, Class XVIII,
Maple 2 and Cedar 1, Hamilton County Parks and
Recreation and the entire community of Hamilton
County join in saying “THANK YOU. Job well
done and good luck in all your future endeavors!”
Rookery Preserve Hike
Join a Park Naturalist at our newest park for some true
exploration! Access to this 30+ acre park is restricted
during the majority of the year so that we don’t disturb
the nesting Great Blue Heron. The birds are not at
the nesting site for just a few months out of the year,
so this is our chance to explore the areas under their
canopy nursery. Access to that part of the property is
only allowed with a Naturalist, so please join us as we
explore and discuss this amazing habitat!
Date: Saturday, November 10 at 2:00 pm
Location: RP
Chickadees begin hiding seeds in the fall
in preparation for winter. Remembering
where all these seeds are is a huge
challenge. Scientists hypothesize that
Chickadees grow extra brain cells in the
fall which helps them recall where all
their food is cached! This process takes
place in the hippocampus area of the
brain. Come spring, when their expanded
memory is no longer needed, those brain
cells are replaced with other cells.
Bird Study Merit Badge
Boy Scouts are invited to achieve their Bird Study Merit
badge with Naturalists and members of the Amos
Butler Audubon Society over winter break! The first
day will consist of classroom work which will satisfy
requirements 1-4. The second day we will be out in the
field participating in the 112th Christmas Bird Count
with the National Audubon Society. We will meet
requirements 5-7 at this time. Requirement 8 must be
completed on your own and proof of it must be shown
to the Merit Badge instructor on the second day in order
to achieve the badge.
Dates: Friday, December 28 from 10:00 am to noon
Saturday, December 29 from 8:00 am to noon
(lunch provided from noon to 1:00)
Cost: $5
Scat and Track Hike
Our forests are filled with many interesting animals, yet
we don’t often get to see them. However, these animals
leave many clues that show us they are out there. Join
a Naturalist as we take a close look at animal tracks,
scat, and other evidence animals leave to identify their
presence.
Hamilton County Parks Employees
are your guide
As an employee of the parks department, one of my
favorite job duties is to speak to the public. All of our
park staff, not just our interpreters, are trained to answer
your questions while on our properties. Each employee
has spent countless hours preparing for your visit, and we
want you to have the best experience possible. So next
time you are in a county park and have a question or see
one of our friendly faces, take the time to say hello and see
what fun information we might have for you. We all know
of hidden gems around the county, or fun and interesting
parts of each park. See you soon!!!
Run Through the Past
This year’s Digging through the Past –
Building to the Future event was VERY
special. The outstanding archaeological
programming presented by expert staff
and guest contributors was complemented
by the inaugural running of the Riverview
Hospital Twilight Trail Run & Walk!
Congratulations to both Pat Cassidy, Winner: Maria Anderson
Fishers, IN for winning the Overall Male
category with a time of 29:41.8 and Maria Anderson,
Noblesville for winning the Overall Female category with
a time of 36:24.5.
Participants commented on how much they enjoyed
the run and walk that offered a course located in one
of the most scenic parks in Hamilton County, at a time
of day unlike most typical running events. Before and
after the run, visitors could enjoy hands-on (and tasty)
archaeological presentations, both indoor and out.
Construction of a dug-out canoe and bent-pole structure
fascinated guests. Visitors were also invited to taste
the various types of foods that sustained the native
inhabitants that lived in the area hundreds of years ago.
A very special thanks goes out to Riverview Hospital for
serving as title sponsor. In recognizing the community
benefits of this health-building and educational event,
Riverview did not hesitate in providing its full support.
We are also grateful to R.E.I. in Castleton for their prize
donations and Fresh Market in Carmel for their donation
of the tasty refreshments and water awaiting runners and
walkers at the end of the run/walk.
Hamilton County Parks and Recreation
appreciates the support of its Foundation
members that volunteered their time to help
stage this year’s successful event. Friends
of Hamilton County Parks raised funds that
will be used in the ongoing maintenance
and development of Strawtown Koteewi
Park, for the benefit of all county residents
and visitors.
If you are battling cabin fever, try getting
outside for a short walk on a sunny winter
day. The exposure to sunlight and the blue
sky will help battle the blahs of winter.
American Sycamore trees add color and
texture to the landscape. Their thin, scaly
bark flakes off, exposing a myriad of colors
including olive, tan, cream, and finally stark
white. The rapid growth rate of the tree is
the reason most scientists believe the bark
sloughs off, but no one has determined what
evolutionary advantage this has for the tree.
This mystery only adds to the interesting
camouflage-like appearance American
Sycamores provide to the wet woods of
central Indiana.
