Tyler, Anne

Digging to America

In what is perhaps her richest and most deeply

searching novel, Anne Tyler gives us a story

about what it is to be an American, and about

Maryam Yazdan, who after Thirty-five years in

this country must finally come to terms with her

“outsiderness.”

A luminous novel brimming with subtle, funny,

and tender observations that cast a penetrating

light on the American way as seen from two

perspectives, those who are born here and those

who are still struggling to fit in.

Vargas, Fred

The Three Evangelists

Sophia Simeonidis, a Greek opera singer, wakes

up one morning to discover that a tree has

appeared overnight in the garden of her Paris

house. Intrigued and unnerved, she turns to her

neighbours: Vandoosler, an ex-policeman, and

three impecunious historians, Mathias, Marc and

Lucien - the three evangelists. They find nothing

but a few weeks later, Sophia disappears and her

body is found burned to ashes in a car. Several

people seem to have a motive as Vandoosler and

the three evangelists set out to find the truth.

Wagner, Erica

Seizure

Janet grew up with her father; her mother, she

was told, died when she was three. Her father's

stories were of her mother's beauty and their

early love. But now, living an ocean away, she

unexpectedly inherits a house. The house had

belonged to her mother, who in fact lived long

into Janet's adulthood. In a state of shock, she

travels north with the key and finds an old stone

cottage at the sea's edge.

Waites, Martyn

The White Room

19-year-old Jack Smeaton returns from the

trenches and the trauma of WWII. He seeks

solace in socialism, falling under the spell of the

young T. Dan Smith, visionary future leader of

Newcastle city council. Meanwhile, the future of

Monica Blacklock, victim of a childhood of

abuse, seems unremittingly bleak. A chance

encounter with a handsome young man on the

banks of the river Tyne looks set to change her

life for the better. But handsome, psychopathic

Brian Mooney has plans for Monica. In fact, Brian

has plans for lots of people.
