ArcelorMittal is one of the world's biggest 

steel corporations. The company's electric 

steelworks in Hamburg consumes around 

one terawatt hour of electricity and two terawatt 

hours of gas in total per year. Given 

these quantities, optimum energy management, 

as stipulated by ISO 50.001 is an important 

component of corporate strategy. 

With its energy management approach 

consisting of analysis and consumption 

control, Schneider Electric came out on 

top against numerous other providers, and 

significant savings were achieved. 

The PowerLogic ION 6200 network 

analyser is used here to analyse flickering 

(momentary faults in the grid). 

The company uses circuit breakers from 

the Masterpact and Compact NSX ranges. 

Masterpact switches are used as feedin 

switches for busbars. The intelligent 

switches permanently supply energy 

data from the systems via Modbus and 

Ethernet. This information is accessed by

Energy-efficient automation of machines 

is an increasingly important field, 

as demonstrated in the new SP2-NG 

horizontal flow wrapping machine from 

Italian machine builder ACMA: the new 

machines consume up to 30% less power 

than the predecessor series, depending 

on the operating conditions. This improvement 

was made possible by optimising 

the movement design with SoMachine 

Motion, integrating drive simulation (up to 

10% savings) and equipping a vacuum 

pump known for its high energy consumption 

with speed control (up to 20% 

savings). This way, the SP2-NG horizontal 

flow wrapping machine uses up to 30% 

less electrical energy than comparable 

predecessor machines, depending 

on what product is packaged. It uses 

PacDrive as the automation platform,

EUREF-Campus 

Model project for energy revolution 

The EUREF-Campus is a city development 

project which, in the final stage, produces 

the energy consumed there in a decentralised 

manner on site – via photovoltaics, 

wind turbines and a combined heat and 

power station. The generators and consumers 

are all part of the Micro Smart Grid 

on campus. Energy storage in combination 

with renewable energy is also being tested 

here along with electromobility, and energy 

monitoring is used to depict consumption 

patterns. Conext inverters were installed 

for feeding solar energy into the micro 

smart grid. Integrated XW hybrid charger/ 

inverters link the stationary energy storage 

system (total capacity: 3,000 amperehours) 

to the smart grid and control energy 

storage and feed-in. Intelligent EVlink 

electric charging stations charge electric 

vehicles, with optional recovery of batterystored 

energy. Current flows in the smart 

grid are tracked and controlled through a 

visualisation and monitoring system.
