groundbreaking database and the extensi<strong>on</strong> of its data management<br />

“<str<strong>on</strong>g>Sybase</str<strong>on</strong>g> has a good presence in UNIX databases. Making<br />
the jump <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>Linux</strong> is a logical step,” Forrester Research’s Noel<br />
Yuhanna says, and “<strong>on</strong>e with which <str<strong>on</strong>g>Sybase</str<strong>on</strong>g> can leverage its<br />

that “<str<strong>on</strong>g>Sybase</str<strong>on</strong>g> is willing <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> swap its c<strong>on</strong>siderable clout in<br />

Noting a “bunch of reas<strong>on</strong>s” why <str<strong>on</strong>g>IBM</str<strong>on</strong>g> would team with<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>Sybase</str<strong>on</strong>g>, Philip Howard, of Bloor Research, wrote in IT-<br />
Direc<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>r.com: “<str<strong>on</strong>g>Sybase</str<strong>on</strong>g> ASE was the first mainstream<br />
database <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> be ported <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the <strong>Linux</strong> platform (back in<br />
1999), so <str<strong>on</strong>g>Sybase</str<strong>on</strong>g> has more experience than any<strong>on</strong>e else<br />

TEAM BUILDING<br />
Yankee manager Joe Torre was excited <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> be with 200<br />
financial services cus<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>mers of <str<strong>on</strong>g>Sybase</str<strong>on</strong>g>, including Bear<br />
Stearns, The Deposi<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>ry Trust & Clearing Corp.,<br />
JPMorgan Fleming, Lava Trading, and Thoms<strong>on</strong>. “You<br />
d<strong>on</strong>’t get invited out in New York if you haven’t w<strong>on</strong> a<br />
World Series,” Torre deadpanned amid laughter, describing<br />
the Big Board’s floor as “an exciting place.”<br />
“This is an exciting partnership you’re trying <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>put</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>gether,” he <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>ld <str<strong>on</strong>g>Sybase</str<strong>on</strong>g>’s Raj Nathan and <str<strong>on</strong>g>IBM</str<strong>on</strong>g>’s Per<br />
Larsen. “It’s something that matches up with what we<br />
do,” he explained. “It’s team building, getting the job<br />
d<strong>on</strong>e—it’s your goal.”<br />
A Compelling Migrati<strong>on</strong> Path<br />
Raj Nathan, senior vice president and general manager of<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>Sybase</str<strong>on</strong>g>’s Informati<strong>on</strong> Technology and Services Group, says he<br />
believes that the <str<strong>on</strong>g>IBM</str<strong>on</strong>g> partnership offers a compelling migrati<strong>on</strong><br />
path, especially for <str<strong>on</strong>g>Sybase</str<strong>on</strong>g>’s <str<strong>on</strong>g>Wall</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Street</str<strong>on</strong>g> cus<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>mers that<br />
want <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> reduce costs. Nathan bases his belief <strong>on</strong> research by<br />
The Standish Group, which c<strong>on</strong>cluded, in August 2004, that<br />
“overall, the most cost-effective soluti<strong>on</strong> running <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> date is<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>Sybase</str<strong>on</strong>g> ASE running <strong>on</strong> <strong>Linux</strong> platforms.”<br />
“<str<strong>on</strong>g>Sybase</str<strong>on</strong>g> ASE for <strong>Linux</strong> is an ideal data management platform<br />
for the <str<strong>on</strong>g>IBM</str<strong>on</strong>g> OpenPower platform, which is intended<br />
for enterprises seeking the most scalable and reliable <strong>Linux</strong><br />
soluti<strong>on</strong>s,” says Nathan.<br />
He also notes that over 90 days, 15,000 free downloads of<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>Sybase</str<strong>on</strong>g> Express Editi<strong>on</strong> for <strong>Linux</strong> had been recorded. This<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>Sybase</str<strong>on</strong>g> product, released in September 2004, was the first<br />
enterprise-class commercial database <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> go from pilot <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
deployment without incurring any costs.<br />
Per Larsen, vice president, Marketing and Strategy, <str<strong>on</strong>g>IBM</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
Systems Group, says that <str<strong>on</strong>g>IBM</str<strong>on</strong>g> is committed <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> providing<br />
cus<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>mers with <strong>Linux</strong> soluti<strong>on</strong>s that help them achieve peak<br />
performance with a low <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>tal cost of ownership. “Cus<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>mers<br />
want soluti<strong>on</strong>s that run <strong>on</strong> high-performing, scalable, and<br />
reliable hardware platforms while lowering costs. We value<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>Sybase</str<strong>on</strong>g>’s commitment <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> our OpenPower platform with the<br />
additi<strong>on</strong> of <str<strong>on</strong>g>Sybase</str<strong>on</strong>g> ASE for <strong>Linux</strong>.”<br />
IT World Canada greeted the announcement with the<br />
headline “<str<strong>on</strong>g>IBM</str<strong>on</strong>g> could unlock bank vaults for <str<strong>on</strong>g>Sybase</str<strong>on</strong>g>,” pointing<br />
out that the <str<strong>on</strong>g>Sybase</str<strong>on</strong>g>/<str<strong>on</strong>g>IBM</str<strong>on</strong>g> deal isn’t limited <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Wall</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Street</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
trading and banking houses but extends <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> Canadian <strong>on</strong>es<br />
as well.<br />
The article notes the observati<strong>on</strong> of Jamie Sharp, vice<br />
president of cus<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>mer segments with Internati<strong>on</strong>al Data<br />
Corp. in Tor<strong>on</strong><str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>: The <str<strong>on</strong>g>Sybase</str<strong>on</strong>g>/<str<strong>on</strong>g>IBM</str<strong>on</strong>g> partnership could change<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Wall</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Street</str<strong>on</strong>g>.<br />
“<str<strong>on</strong>g>Sybase</str<strong>on</strong>g> would be able <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> leverage <str<strong>on</strong>g>IBM</str<strong>on</strong>g>’s significant<br />
presence am<strong>on</strong>g Canadian banks <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> push its ASE, using<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>IBM</str<strong>on</strong>g>’s server platform as a way <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> get a foot in the door,”<br />
wrote IT World Canada reporter Tom Venetis.<br />
The magazine c<strong>on</strong>cludes with a quote from Sharp: “If<br />

TRUSTED TECHNOLOGY at the Heart of Critical Missi<strong>on</strong>s<br />

INNOVATIONS—from camera ph<strong>on</strong>es <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> com<str<strong>on</strong>g>put</str<strong>on</strong>g>er networks<br />
that handle billi<strong>on</strong>s of e-mail messages—seem <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> require ic<strong>on</strong>oclastic<br />
thinking. Yet just as important for innovati<strong>on</strong> is trust.<br />
Innova<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>rs must have c<strong>on</strong>fidence in certain core technologies<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> allow them the freedom <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> invent at the “edge.”<br />
Because it trusts its core data management capabilities,<br />
the New York S<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>ck Exchange (NYSE) can develop<br />
high-powered electr<strong>on</strong>ic trading systems <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> handle the<br />
ever increasing volume and complexity of <str<strong>on</strong>g>Wall</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Street</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
commerce. Similarly, the innovative next-generati<strong>on</strong> ballistic<br />
missile early warning system of the U.S. Air Force (USAF)<br />
was built <strong>on</strong> informati<strong>on</strong> management technology that can<br />
reliably handle critical missi<strong>on</strong>s.<br />
When it comes <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> critical missi<strong>on</strong>s, innovati<strong>on</strong> is meaningful<br />
<strong>on</strong>ly if can be delivered hand in hand with reliability.<br />
A missi<strong>on</strong>-critical software system earns the highest<br />
security rating when it’s tried and tested repeatedly, known<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> perform seamlessly when integrated with other systems,<br />
and capable of resp<strong>on</strong>ding <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> every known event—and some<br />
that haven’t even been imagined.<br />
One technology that has all these characteristics is <str<strong>on</strong>g>Sybase</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
Adaptive Server Enterprise (ASE).<br />
The Standish Group, in a report issued in August 2004,<br />
c<strong>on</strong>cluded that ASE running <strong>on</strong> <strong>Linux</strong> platforms in the business<br />
world is the most cost-effective soluti<strong>on</strong>, compared <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> Oracle,<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>IBM</str<strong>on</strong>g> DB2, and Microsoft SQL databases.<br />
The <str<strong>on</strong>g>Sybase</str<strong>on</strong>g> technology is the core of the NYSE’s demanding<br />
trading system, handling billi<strong>on</strong>s of transacti<strong>on</strong>s while being<br />
able <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> evaluate each for fraud and ties <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> clandestine terrorist<br />
financing activities. The USAF’s space-based system uses ASE<br />
<strong>on</strong> mobile satellite ground stati<strong>on</strong>s for the new ballistic missile<br />
early warning system.<br />
If you’ve ever bought or sold securities, the odds are<br />
that Goldman Sachs, the Fortune 500 trading company,<br />
was in some way involved. Goldman Sachs employs more<br />
than 36,000 ASE databases <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> field more than five milli<strong>on</strong><br />
transacti<strong>on</strong>s a day. <str<strong>on</strong>g>Sybase</str<strong>on</strong>g> has such a reliable re<str<strong>on</strong>g>put</str<strong>on</strong>g>ati<strong>on</strong><br />
<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Wall</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Street</str<strong>on</strong>g> that the Tower Group research company set<br />
out <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> establish just how far the company’s reach extended.<br />
It found that <str<strong>on</strong>g>Sybase</str<strong>on</strong>g> technology drives more than half of<br />
the <str<strong>on</strong>g>Street</str<strong>on</strong>g>’s transacti<strong>on</strong>s. <str<strong>on</strong>g>Sybase</str<strong>on</strong>g> cus<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>mers include Bank<br />
of New York, Citigroup, Deutsche Bank, JPMorgan Chase,<br />
Lehman Brothers, Merrill Lynch, and Sumi<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>mo-Mitsui<br />
Banking Corp.<br />
If you’re am<strong>on</strong>g the milli<strong>on</strong>s who have an AOL account,<br />
it’s likely that you’ve added <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the more than <strong>on</strong>e billi<strong>on</strong><br />
e-mails and instant messages that AOL trusts ASE <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
handle every day.<br />
As the U.S. and its allies wage a new kind of war<br />
against terror, they fight not <strong>on</strong>ly with weap<strong>on</strong>s but<br />
also with com<str<strong>on</strong>g>put</str<strong>on</strong>g>ers, financial systems, and the courts.<br />
The U.S.’s intelligence community trusts <str<strong>on</strong>g>Sybase</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
technology <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> perform antiterrorism analytics and<br />
calculati<strong>on</strong>s that inform the nati<strong>on</strong>’s first resp<strong>on</strong>ders.<br />
Joseph R. Fox, whose company, Integrated Data<br />
Systems (IDS), partners with <str<strong>on</strong>g>Sybase</str<strong>on</strong>g> in the Washing<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>n,<br />
D.C., intelligence community, says that it’s very important<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> have a cutting-edge product. “But for us it is even more<br />
important <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> have trust.”<br />
That is why the NYSE, the USAF, the U.S. Navy, the<br />
FBI, the Department of Defense, scores of <str<strong>on</strong>g>Wall</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Street</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
firms, AOL, and many more companies and organizati<strong>on</strong>s<br />
that require their systems <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> be missi<strong>on</strong>-critical place<br />
their c<strong>on</strong>fidence in ASE.—CF<br />
