Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time
There is a story that has been circulating about Pope Francis. Whether
all the details are accurate is not as important as the overall meaning.
As it is told, after his election Pope Francis returned to live at the
Vatican guesthouse, which he has now made his home. He got up early
one morning and opened the door of his room to find a Swiss Guard
standing at attention. The pope asked the man how long he had been
there and the guard responded, "All night, Holy Father." The pope
brought out a chair and told the guard to sit down because he must be
tired. When the guard responded that it was against the rules, the pope
responded, "I'm the pope. Please sit." The guard uncomfortably took
his seat, and the pope returned to his room. A few moments later, he
came out with some bread and jam for the guard and wished him "Bon
appétit!" before closing his bedroom door.
In this weekend's Gospel Jesus uses the example of dining with others
to teach his disciples about life in the kingdom of God. He suggests that
a person's sense of self-importance should not overtake the humbleness
that characterizes the communal life of the kingdom. As citizens of
God's realm there is only One who outranks everyone else, and that is
the Lord. People with power often get special places. The head table at
a conference, meeting, or awards' banquet always has the "big shots"
filling the seats. Political fund-raisers have the highest ranking elected
leaders sitting up front. In the Gospel, Jesus suggests that we be more
realistic about ourselves. As the story about Pope Francis indicates,
esteem comes not because we get the most revered place at table, but
because we care about others.
The command that Jesus gives to invite the poor, the crippled, the lame,
and the blind still binds us in charity today.

Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time
In the Gospel today, Jesus warns us not to give in hopes of
repayment, but to give open handedly to the poor and needy.
That sort of giving mirrors the bountiful giving of God, and
Jesus assures us it is blessed indeed! Pay it forward! Give to
people in your life who cannot possibly return your good deeds.

WELCOME
We welcome Laura Javorka to the position of Assistant
Director of Music for the parish. Until last year, she was the
music teacher in the school. She will act as the liaison
between the parish and school music programs.
Laura has been instrumental in establishing our bell
choirs and she directs our Youth Chorale as well as
accompanies the weekend Masses.
YOUTH CHORALE
Our Children's Choir is taking on a
whole new look, sound, and name.
We are currently accepting
registrations for our new Youth
Chorale.
We are looking for older youth who
are skilled at singing harmony, boys
with changing voices to sing 3-part
harmony, and young, energetic choir members looking for a
challenge. The Chorale is open to all parish students in
grades two through high school.
We will sing twice a month at the Saturday, 5:30 p.m.
Mass. Practices will be from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. on the days
that we sing.
We will also sing for Christmas Eve 5:30 p.m. Mass.

HANDBELL CHOIR
We are in need of two more choir
members in grades 5 through adult to
join our Handbell Choir.
Choir members need to be available
to practice on Wednesday evenings
and to play at the Saturday 5:30 p.m.
Mass and the 5:30 p.m. Christmas
Eve Mass.

THE RCIA
In an attempt to help those people
understand the Church better, the Catholic
Church has a process called the Rite of
Christian Initiation of Adults, better known
by the initials of RCIA.
Our RCIA program begins again this fall on the first
Tuesday of October (October 1st). We meet every Tuesday
evening at 7:00 p.m. in the Parish Conference Room from
October 1st until Easter. If you feel that you are being called
to embrace the teachings of the Catholic Church, the RCIA
program might help you to come to a decision.
The last two Tuesdays of this month (September 17 & 24),
we will have information sessions for those interested in the
RCIA process. You need only attend one of the two
evenings in September.
The RCIA program is not only for non-Catholics. It is also
for those who may have been baptized as Catholics but
never completed their sacraments of initiation: Eucharist
and/or Confirmation. If you were baptized Catholic and
would like to finish your sacraments, come to the parish on
one of those two Tuesdays in September and learn more
about the RCIA program.
We welcome you and look forward to seeing you there.

Holy Name Society
Attention All Men of the Parish!
Our Annual Evening of Reflection will take place on
Tuesday, September 17th
at the Carmelite Shrine in Munster.
Our spiritual retreat leader will be Rev. Rick Holy.

Mass will be at 6:30 p.m.
Dinner will follow, as well as a talk by Fr. Rick.
The Rosary and Benediction will conclude the evening.
The Holy Name Society’s cost for the dinner is $14 per person.

VIRTUS Training
Please attend if you volunteer with children.
VIRTUS training is scheduled for
Saturday, September 7th from 10:30 a.m. -1:30 p.m.
in the Solar Room. The VIRTUS Program deals with the
awareness and prevention of the sexual abuse of children. Due
to the content of the program, no children are permitted to
attend the training. Anyone 18 years or older must be VIRTUS
trained to volunteer or work in the school or in the parish
whenever children are involved in activities.

reserve your seat for this next VIRTUS training and to assure
we have enough materials for everyone.

Evening Scripture Study
Thursday Evenings
September 5th to November 14th
Study Topic: The Book of Genesis
All adult parishioners are invited to join our Evening Scripture
Study group. Again this session, we will be using the Little
Rock Scripture Study program.
Each class includes prayer, group discussion about the week's
reading and commentary, and a video. This session, we will be
doing an intermediate study of the book of Genesis. A study of
the book of Genesis is an invitation not only to contemplate the
creation story, but to remember with the Israelites their ancestors
in faith. Please join us for 11 weekly sessions on
Thursday Evenings:
September 5th to November 14th
6:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. in the Parish Conference Room.
The cost of the program is $15.00 to cover the study materials
and will be collected at the first class.

Vocations Committee
Just 15 years ago, a few of our members became concerned
about our serious need for vocations to the priesthood.
These individuals have met every Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. to pray
before the Blessed Sacrament.
The number of Seminarians has really grown, as has the
faith of these members, they say, though it remains the same
dedicated small group. We welcome other parishioners to join
our faithful group. Our next meeting :

St. Thomas More School students were
making a big splash at the annual
Back to School Pool Party.
A perfect summer evening was the backdrop
to a night of fun in the water and sand as
hundreds of people from our
St. Thomas More School
family attended the party, held
at the Munster Community
Pool on Friday, August 23rd ,
marking the end of the first
week of school.
From slides and swimming to
sand volleyball and the play
area, happy faces could be seen everywhere at
this first official event of the new school year.
Thank you to the STMS Parent Association for
organizing the event and to the record number
of families who attended.

The parish SVDP Food Pantry provides only non-perishable
food, cleaning supplies & toiletries to those in need who live
in Munster & South Hammond. We cannot distribute any
medicines, nor can we accept perishable food as we have no
place to keep it.

Apple Picking & Wine Tasting in Michigan

We couldn’t resist going to the Tree-Mendus Fruit Farm Market in
Michigan once again this fall. Country farm
wagons will drive us through their beautiful
acreage of 20,000 fruit trees and nearly 230
varieties of apples. You can pick your own
apples using their free gift bag or buy
apples in their country store, the Farm
Market. The Market also sells apple butter,
apple or cherry cider, cherry juice and many
other Michigan-produced items, including honey and maple syrup.
All of this apple picking will have us ready for a substantial lunch.
A delicious and satisfying home-cooked Country Style Picnic
Lunch will be served at the Farm Market.
On our way home we will stop at St. Julian Winery in Union City,
Michigan to enjoy some wine tasting. This small winery is known
for its excellent wines and helpful service. Wine may be purchased
as well. We should have a merry & fun group on our way home!

On Sunday, August 18th, Bishop Dale Melczek admitted Seminarians
Mark Muzzillo, Jordan Fetcko, Gregory Bim-Merle & Nathaniel Edquist
to the
Candidacy for Holy Orders.
The Admission Ceremony took place during the 9:00 a.m. Mass at St. Mary’s Church in Crown Point.
Concelebrating the Mass with Bishop Melczek were Fr. Mick Kopil and Fr. Pat Kalich.
The Admission to Candidacy Rite offers the candidates for ordination the opportunity to publicly express
their intention to receive ordination as a Deacon and later as a Priest.
Please pray for these candidates as they continue discerning for the priesthood and please continue to pray
for an increase in vocations to the priesthood, diaconate and consecrated religious life.

Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. featuring the "Wesoly Lud" folk
dance troupe. Music by the EZ Tones polka band (1:00 to 4:00 p.m.)

Wounded Healers Grief Support
The Fall Session has begun with the next meeting on
Wednesday, September 11th. Separate groups for those dealing with
death of a spouse, death of a parent, sibling or friend or death of a
child or grandchild. There are additional groups for adults or teens
dealing with the loss of a loved one from suicide. All meetings are
held Wednesday evenings at St. James Church in Highland from
