FROM OUR CMD
(Excerpts from CMD’s Message on Foundation Day)
Shri A.K. Srivastava
CMD, Nalco
Twenty nine years in the life of an organization is good enough
a time for renewals and rethinking. It is not only the issue of
renewal of technologies or machineries, but also renewal of
our ways of thinking and working in the organization.
For the last 29 years, Nalconians have sincerely pursued
excellence in almost all fields of the business and despite all
odds, have succeeded in creating an organization that is now
well known as a ‘blue chip’ Navratna Public Sector Enterprise
of the country.
Building Nalco has meant not merely contributing to the
aluminium industry of the country, but it has also involved
enormous task of socio-economic development of Damanjodi
and Angul areas where Nalco plants operate. Rehabilitation
of displaced families, employment and income generation
of local people, provision of drinking water, education and
health, development of infrastructure, and other community
development activities have earned Nalco a place of pride
not only in the corporate world of India but also in the hearts
of the people of Orissa.
But as we pause, and look ahead, we do clearly see the
challenges of change that are unfolding before us. In this present
scenario, global competition is threatening to dismantle the
old manufacturing regime. The companies, which thrived in
protected environment of business, now find it difficult to
survive. The technology, the knowledge base, the products,
the pricing mechanism, the customers’ expectations and the
business equations are changing too fast for anybody’s comfort.
On the top of it, the prevailing global economic crisis has
severely affected the corporate sectors.
In this situation, all of us have to make concerted efforts to
curtail costs and improve productivity in all the segments of
our activities. We must ensure that our mines and plants are
operated at optimum capacity, while keeping the consumption
of raw materials and electricity well within norms. We must
consider austerity as way of our life.
Expansion and growth
Despite these challenges, what sets Nalco apart is the
continuous quest for growth and expansion. With two major
expansions of brownfield capacities at an investment of
Rs.8000 crore completed, the Company is now gearing up
for 3 rd phase expansion at a cost of Rs.6000 crore. This will
further raise our aluminium capacity to 5.80 lakh tonnes and
power generation capacity to 1400 MW. Besides brownfield
expansion, the Company is launching greenfield projects in
India and abroad involving massive investment of more than
Rs.40,000 crore.
Indeed, these are quite challenging tasks before us. In the
next 3-5 years, we have to put in our best efforts collectively
to achieve success in these ambitious programmes.
Redefining business strategy
Our core competence has been primary aluminium
manufacturing. However, time has come to redefine our
business strategy in view of growing competition and changing
market dynamics. Accordingly, we have already framed our
new vision statement ‘To be a reputed global company in
metals and energy sector’.
A broad roadmap of business strategies up to the year 2020
has been chalked out, which lays special emphasis on sectoral
diversification. The broad canvas includes forays into other
metals like copper, gold, zinc, nickel etc. and in energy sector.
The Company has thus embarked upon ambitious path to
make the Company a true multinational.
I am sure, with broad policy framework and roadmap in place,
we will be able to achieve the targeted turnover of over
Rs.25,000 crore by 2020.
Nalco signs MoU for setting up Nuclear Power Plants
Exploring opportunities
Nalco has signed a Memorandum of
Understanding (MoU) with Nuclear Power
Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) to set
up Nuclear Power Plants in India. The MoU
was signed by Shri A.K. Srivastava, CMD, Nalco and Dr.
S.K. Jain, CMD, NPCIL, at Mumbai on November 26.
As per the MoU, Nalco intends to invest in Nuclear Power
generation as part of its strategy to diversify into commercial
generation and sale of electric power and to leverage its
experience in electricity generation by setting up Nuclear
Power Plants jointly with NPCIL. This is in line with the
vision of Nalco - to be a reputed player in energy sector and
as part of its diversification to metals and power sectors.
Presently, the Company operates a coal fired thermal power
plant at Angul for captive use of its aluminium Smelter and
with the ongoing 2 nd phase expansion the capacity is being
increased to go up to 1200 MW.
It may be mentioned that, NPCIL is a Central Public Sector
Undertaking under the administrative control of Department
7
of Atomic Energy (DAE), and involved in the Design,
Construction, Operation and Maintenance of Nuclear Power
Plants for generation of electricity.
The MoU paves the way for Nalco to go for alternative sources
of commercial power generation as IPP from nuclear fuels
compared to the conventional fossil fuel fired boilers which
are increasingly subjected to stringent environmental norms.

Productivity Week
In order to spread productivity awareness among the employees, Productivity Week was celebrated by Nalco at its offices
and sites from February 12 to 18. During the week-long activities, various competitions like slogan, quiz, essay, poster etc
were organized in English, Hindi, and Oriya among the employees. Banners and posters were also displayed in various
locations at plants sites and in its offices.
To mark the celebrations, Nalco organized a talk by eminent
management guru Shri Sharu S. Rangnekar on the topic
‘Productivity for Inclusive Growth’ at Corporate Office on
February 16. In his talk Shri Rangnekar said that since ages,
Corporate Houses have been afflicted by the blame-game
syndrome. Because of compartmentalization and multi-layer
system of management, more often than not, individuals and
groups tend to blame each other for collective failure. In the
process, productivity of the organization becomes a major
casualty. However, Shri Rangnekar suggested that as a curative
measure to this corporate malady, the 3Es – ego, envy &
expectation – should be lessened to the maximum possible.
“Then only, the productivity of a company could be enhanced,”
said Shri Rangnekar.
At Angul
In S&P Complex, Productivity Week was jointly organized
by Nalco’s Industrial Engineering Dept, and Orissa Productivity
Council, Bhubaneswar. Various competitions & workshops
were organized to mark the week-long activities. Besides, to
generate awareness, banners and posters were also displayed
at strategic places in S&P Complex.
held at the training institute conference hall. Shri Sachikant
Aluminium World
Indian aluminium sector poised for
stupendous growth
The Indian aluminium market is growing at a rapid pace and
it is one metallic industry where India can emerge as a
powerhouse within the next decade
According to industry sources, India with total bauxite reserves
of about 3 billion accounts for almost 7.5% of the world's
65 billion bauxite reserves and is ranked sixth among the
countries with highest bauxite reserves. The worldwide
alumina production competence is around 58 million tonnes
in which India has 2.7 million tones, being the fifth largest
producer, after Australia, Guinea, Brazil and Jamaica.
Currently all the major Indian producers are trying to make
good the opportunity by expanding furiously. China, which
has doubled its aluminium capacity over past half decade to
account for more than a fifth of the world's output, is a net
exporter of the metal. The Indian aluminium market is growing
at a rapid pace, yet per capita consumption is extremely low:
With over 7% growth per annum, one of the highest in the
world, the Indian aluminium market is booming. Even better,
sectors that extensively use aluminium are themselves
booming, ensuring that this sector stays firmly on the growth
path for times to come. Total aluminium consumption in
the country is around 1,100 KT at present, which has grown
significantly from 2002 level of 600 KT.
Though India's per capita consumption of aluminium stands
too low (under 1 kg) comparing to the per capita consumptions
of other countries like the US & Europe (25 to 30 kgs), Japan
(15 kgs), Taiwan (10 kgs) and China (3 kgs), the demand is
growing. In India, the industries that require aluminium mostly
include power (44%), consumer durables, transportation (10-
12%), construction (17%) and packaging. With one of the
world's lowest per capita consumption, the country's
aluminium demand is set to explode.
(Sourced from - The Economic Times (website), 23.02.10)
India as a destination
for aluminium smelting
Equipped as they are with low cost and efficiently run power
stations taking care of their smelters' entire electricity
requirements and as the country is endowed with rich bauxite
deposits, our production cost of aluminium figures in the
lowest quartile among world producers. Nalco has the unique
advantage of ownership of huge high quality bauxite deposits
at a single site in Orissa's hills of Panchpatmali. The rich
mineral endowment plus unremitting efforts to acquire more
deposits both within and outside Orissa will keep Nalco a
perennial exporter of alumina.
Nalco is working to give shape to three mega projects
simultaneously, including a $4-billion 500,000 tonnes smelter
along with a captive 1,250 power complex at East Kalimantan
in Indonesia. Nalco is also pursuing a project of similar
configuration at Jharsuguda in Orissa. The promised access
to 80 million tonnes of bauxite deposits at Gudem and KR
Konda in Andhra Pradesh will also lead Nalco to build a
1.4-million-tonne alumina refinery in the state. For any metal
group raw material security is of cardinal importance. Nalco
will no doubt have enough bauxite to go by for a good number
of years. The company's move to acquire bauxite and coal
resources globally is seen in the context of its plans to build
large new smelters.
Hindalco has also got big things on its plate. If all its projects
get commissioned on revised schedule, then its smelting
capacity will rise to 1.7 million tonnes from 500,000 tonnes
and alumina refining capacity to 6.5 million tonnes from
1.7 million tonnes by 2013. Meanwhile, Novelis acquisition
has given Hindalco global leadership in that value added
segment where path breaking technologies are in application.
Vedanta has arrived on the Indian aluminium scene much
later than Hindalco and Nalco. While it has made up for
the lost time by gaining control of Balco and Madras
Aluminium, Vedanta is aggressively building new capacity
through greenfield and brownfield routes. By 2013, it claims,
it will have at least 2.6 million tonne smelting and 5 million
tonne alumina refinery capacity. Action of the three groups
is vindication that India due to its abundance of bauxite
and coal resources is the ideal place to smelt aluminium.
