Open Letter To Alumnae
Dear Graduates,
Every year ADWC holds a very special event for the graduating students, who have been
waiting for this day since they first joined the College, and some may have even dreamt of it
since childhood! This May ADWC is going to celebrate its 22 nd successful year, and at the
same time our 2009 graduates are also sharing in the celebration during our graduation
ceremonies. We congratulate all of them on their successful completion of their studies at
ADWC!
As the number of ADWC graduates increases each year, we hope that our ADWC Alumnae
Association will also grow. Currently, we have more than 6000 alumnae! As the Alumnae
Association continues to expand programs for graduates, we hope to be in touch with all of
our alumnae. We want to hear from all of you, to know where you are now, to share the
memories and experience of your days at the College, to hear your feedback and suggestions,
as well as to have you participate in our activities. If you are not registered with us, please
visit us at the Office of Alumnae Affairs at ADWC’s City Campus, or else just give us a call. We
can update your information and provide you with an alumnae card – your lifelong access to
the College! Looking forward to hearing from you all.
Sincerely,
Shaikha Al Jaberi, Alumnae Liaison Officer
Why Should I Have an Alumnae Card?
How Can I Get My Card?
Campus News 5
Where Are They 6
Now?

Firstly, it’s your membership identity
of belonging to the Alumnae
Association.
It gives you free access to the College,
to attend and participate in events and
activities, such as National Day, Open
Day, field trips, and career fairs.
It’s a very simple process! You will
need to stop by the Office of Alumnae
Affairs, complete an application form,
and pay a nominal amount of 20 AED.
Once your alumnae card is ready, you
will receive an email to come and
collect it. You may then begin using
the card that day!

You will be able to borrow and use
library resources.

You will be able to join personal and
professional development courses
organized by the College’s Business
Development Unit, such as courses in
IELTS, PMP, ICDL, and foreign
languages.

A Letter from ADWC Director Dr. Dave Pelham
Dr. Dave Pelham
ADWC Director
Welcome to this edition of the Abu
Dhabi Women’s College Alumnae
Newsletter. Since January it has been my
honor to serve as the Director of ADWC.
This newsletter represents but one of
many activities that we are undertaking
in an attempt to keep our alumnae
connected to our College. A new and
highly energetic Alumnae Board will help
guide the College in this regard.
While I have only been at ADWC a
relatively short time, I have been very
impressed with the quality of activities that I
have seen here. In the last few months
ADWC has hosted a Career Fair and the
annual Ajyaluna event. Our thanks go out to
all of the ADWC alumnae who participated in
those events.
In May we will be celebrating our
Alumnae Month. Two of the most significant
events in this special month will be
Graduation and our Alumnae Luncheon. You
will be hearing much more about those
events.
Abu Dhabi Women’s College and all of
our students benefit from the continued
involvement of our past graduates. Thank
you for your interest. I hope that you will
become even more involved in the future of
ADWC and our students!
Sincerely,
Dr. Dave Pelham, Director
An Introduction to the ADWC Alumnae Board
Fatema Al Saba
Vice President
Board Member Layla interviews
a graduate at the recent
Career Fair.
My name is Ayesha Al-Ateeqi, president
of Abu Dhabi Women’s College Alumnae
Association. I am a 2009 ADWC graduate
with a bachelor’s degree in Education.
Currently I work at Masdar Institute as an
Outreach Marketing Officer. My job is related
to raising awareness in the community
(schools, universities and the public) to
alternative energy and sustainability. I very
much enjoy my job, spreading knowledge
about future energy to everyone I meet.
ADWC has nurtured me into a successful
employee. That is why I remember John F.
Kennedy’s quote, “Ask not what your
country can do for you, but what you can do
for your country.” I believe I should give
back to the community that provided me
with not only knowledge, but also the tools
to make use of this knowledge. For this
reason, I was ambitious not only to join the
Alumnae Association, but also to lead it. I
believe the ADWC Alumnae Association has a
great potential, as it involves young Emirati
graduates that influence each other by
bringing creative ideas and working as one
team to achieve them. Our team consists of
seven members (including me) who are very
hard-working and passionate about giving
back to ADWC.
Fatima Al Saba, our Vice President, did an
amazing job during ‘Ajyaluna,’ hosting a radio
show. According to Fatima, “It was a great way
to reach students and future alumnae.” Layla
Saeed, last year’s “Alumna of the Year,” and I
were both very active during the National Day
celebration and the Career Fair, in order to
raise awareness and attract students to join
our association. I have great hopes for the
future, as there are many activities planned
that we are excited to implement.
Finally I would like to send a message out
to all students and graduates: if you consider
yourself creative, ambitious, and determined
and want to use all that to support HCT’s
vision, then we would love to have you on
board.
Sumayyah Al Suwaidi
First Established Emirati Female Digital Artist
Sumayyah Al Suwaidi is a digital artist whose passion drives her to
manipulate seemingly normal photographs into masterpieces of
emotion and sensuality.
“I use photo manipulation and digital painting to produce visual
artworks full of expressions. Often my pieces are very feminine, with
the illusion of fairytale and nonexistent worlds. My paintings describe
what I am feeling. They are very personal. They come in many different
sizes, printed on canvas, photo and metallic paper and set in beautiful
wooden frames.”
Sumayyah Al Suwaidi
Sumayyah graduated from ADWC with a bachelor’s degree in Applied
Media Studies in 2007, and she is the first female digital artist from the
UAE. Her first series of paintings were in 2001 for his Highness the late
Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan. Her paintings have been exhibited
across the UAE and internationally. Sumayyah was the project manager
and curator of Lights in Harmony, the Emirati Photography
Competition, and she was a judge in the Al Mutahida Art Competition.
Her annual Ramadan Art Bazaar is the talk of the town. She has also
provided workshops and lectures to many art students. Sumayyah has
been featured in many national and international magazines,
newspapers, and television shows for her work.
Future Exhibitions:
Sumayyah is curating an exhibition at Ghaf Art Gallery called Express
Yourself in 30"X30". Artists from all around the world are welcome to
take part with any form of art, as long as it can be hung on
the wall. For more details, please visit the Ghaf Gallery
website www.ghafgallery.com.
Exhibition dates: 9 June - 24 June 2010
Sumayyah’s annual Ramadan Art Bazaar at Ghaf
Gallery will take place during the entire month
of Ramadan. Established artists from around the
UAE will be taking part, including renowned
artists Jalal Luqman, Mattar Bin Lahej, and
Mohamed Kanoo. This is going to be the 3rd
Ramadan Art Bazaar, and each year it attracts
more art collectors and lovers.
Exhibition dates: 15 August - 9 September 2010
with Career and Employer Relations. We are happy to be in touch with you to
organization may want to employ. There are many ways we can come
campus this year for graduates. Visiting guests have included universities
promoting post-graduate studies, companies looking to hire our top graduates,
degree or PhD. We were very happy to have some graduates come back to
campus to learn about different opportunities from all of these organizations.
If you have suggestions on organizations you would like to hear from or
different times you would like us to offer presentations and workshops, please
be in touch.
Assistive Technology Learning Resource Center
The Assistive Technology Learning Resource Centre’s genesis came
from a hugely successful assistive technology exhibition in March 2009.
Upon requests from students, staff, and the community, the Special
Needs Department at the Higher Colleges of Technology established an
Assistive Technology Learning Resource Centre (ATLRC) for the first
time in the UAE in November 2009. Based at Abu Dhabi Women’s
College’s City Campus, the ATLRC provides a wide range of assistive
devices, not only for students having any form of special need, but also
for the community at large.
HE Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan Opening
The International Assistive Technology Forum and
Exhibition
The Mission of the ATLRC
“Assistive technology facilitates
the individual’s ability to make
personal connections with others
and provides opportunities to
focus on their skills and
accomplish their academic
pursuits without the fear of being
stigmatized.”
Dr. Farida Badri
Manager – Student Support Services
The Assistive Technology Learning Resource Centre (ATLRC) is dedicated
to assist special needs students to attain excellence in their highest
educational and professional pursuits by:
Creating an accessible Assistive Technology (AT) learning environment.
Providing access to the use of the most advanced AT resources.
Conducting general awareness events within the community and
offering training programs in the use of AT.
Giving consultancy in the acquisition and use of appropriate AT
resources.
Training and empowering students and community partners with
special needs in the use and application of the AT resources.
Assistive technology is a generic term that includes assistive, adaptive and rehabilitative devices, as well as
the process used in selecting, locating and using them. The devices include low vision aids, text reading machines,
Braille displays, communication aids, assistive listening devices, speech therapy software, AAC (Alternative and
Augmentative Communication) software and devices, word prediction software, magnification software, speech
recognition software, screen reading software, and other products that can be used in classrooms, during exams,
during studies, and while at work.
Assistive technology promotes greater independence for
people with disabilities by enabling them to perform tasks that
they were formerly unable to accomplish, or had great difficulty
accomplishing, by providing enhancements to or changed
methods of interacting with the technology needed to
accomplish such tasks. It provides a gateway to independence
that couldn’t have been imagined before.
The ATLRC is located at Abu Dhabi Women’s College’s City Campus.
