2014-2015 Scholarship Instructions<br />

Congratulations on making the decision to attend <strong>Belmont</strong> <strong>College</strong>. In addition to financial<br />

aid available through state and federal programs, <strong>Belmont</strong> <strong>College</strong> is pleased to offer private<br />

scholarships which are summarized in this publication.<br />

Any student enrolled in for-credit courses may apply for one or more scholarships. Please note<br />

that the specific criteria and requirements of each scholarship may vary, therefore be sure to apply<br />

only for those scholarships for which you are eligible. The General Application is enclosed in this<br />

publication. Some scholarships require separate or additional applications, which are available in<br />

the Financial Aid Office or at www.belmontcollege.edu under the financial aid tab.<br />

Completed applications must be returned to the Financial Aid Office no later than May 1, 2014 for<br />

full consideration. Scholarship recipients will receive a letter confirming the scholarship awarded<br />

and the amount. Contact the Financial Aid Office with any questions or concerns you may have in<br />

person or via email at financial_aid@belmontcollege.edu.<br />

Beginning January 1, 2014 students can complete the 2014-2015 FAFSA (Free Application<br />

for Federal Student Aid). If you have not yet completed the 2014-2015 FAFSA, we strongly<br />

encourage you to do so as soon as possible. You can complete the FAFSA online at<br />

www.fafsa.gov. The <strong>Belmont</strong> <strong>College</strong> School Code is 009941.

AEP Scholarship<br />

American Electric Power is the benefactor of the AEP Scholarship to aid students with financial<br />

need. Complete the FAFSA and be at 200% below the poverty level. See the AEP Scholarship<br />

application for more details.<br />

GPA: 2.75<br />

Amount: Two- $3,000 awarded to a first-year student - under 30 hrs earned.<br />

(Each student will get $1,000 their first year and if still eligible will get<br />

$2,000 the second year.)<br />

One -$1,500 for a second-year student - over 30 hrs earned.<br />

Major: Industrial Electronics and Power Plant Technology<br />

Allegheny Restoration Scholarship<br />

Allegheny Restoration specializes in the restoration of historic structures that date as far back as<br />

the late seventeenth century. With locations in West Virginia and Ohio, the firm practices its craft<br />

all over the country. The purpose of the Allegheny Restoration Scholarship is to provide full tuition<br />

financial assistance for two semesters to one, first-year student who is pursuing an Associate of<br />

Applied Science Degree in Building Preservation/Restoration (BPR). Special consideration will be<br />

given to applications recommended by the BPR program chair.<br />

Amount: Full tuition for two semesters to one, first-year student<br />

Angelina Stone & Marble Scholarship<br />

Designed to assist students in the BPR program who demonstrate potential for academic success.<br />

Students must be enrolled full-time in the BPR program, be exceptional in their class and need<br />

financial assistance.<br />

GPA: 3.00<br />

Amount: Two-$500<br />

Major: BPR<br />

<strong>Belmont</strong> Savings Bank Scholarship<br />

<strong>Belmont</strong> Savings Bank is the benefactor of this scholarship. The scholarship will be given to a<br />

Second Year Student (30+ total credit hours) who is enrolled in a two-year business program and is<br />

either working in the financial services industry or is planning for a career in this industry.<br />

GPA: 2.70<br />

Amount: One- $250<br />

Major: Accounting, Business Administration & Leadership, Small Business<br />

Administration & Entrepreneurship, Office Administration<br />

Donna M. Bukowski, RN Nursing Opportunity Scholarship<br />

The purpose of the Donna M. Bukowski, RN Nursing Opportunity Scholarship is to allow those<br />

students pursuing a career in the field of nursing an additional source of funding for tuition costs.<br />

This scholarship will function to encourage persistence within the nursing program and support<br />

students who desire to continue their college education by becoming registered nurses through our<br />

ADN program.<br />

GPA: N/A<br />

Amount: One - $500<br />

Major: Associate Degree Nursing<br />

Hilda Burrows Door-of-Opportunity Scholarship<br />

This scholarship program provides access to educational services at <strong>Belmont</strong> <strong>College</strong> for qualified<br />

unemployed persons and/or their dependent(s).<br />

Applicants must be:<br />

• Unemployed due to layoff (student, spouse or guardian/parent)<br />

• Provide written verification of layoff or plant closing (on company letterhead)<br />

• Provide verification of eligibility for unemployment compensation<br />

• Be a legal resident of the state of Ohio<br />

GPA: 2.5<br />

Amount: Tuition, Fees and Books minus other forms of aid. Quantity is as<br />

funds remain.<br />

Major: All Degree Seeking Majors<br />

Application: Hilda Burrows Application<br />

Clay Family Memorial Nursing Scholarship<br />

A generous donation to the <strong>Belmont</strong> <strong>College</strong> Foundation was given by the estate of Dr. Mary<br />

Ellen Clay to establish a nursing scholarship endowment in memory of her parents Walter C.<br />

and Christena Stevens Clay. Income from this fund will be devoted to scholarships for students<br />

pursuing associate degrees or certificates in registered nursing and practical nursing. Students<br />

must complete the FAFSA as funds are awarded after available grants are applied. Preference will<br />

be given to students from Harrison, Guernsey, Tuscarawas, and <strong>Belmont</strong> counties in Ohio.<br />

GPA: 2.75<br />

Amount: One-Two - Up to $2,250 per semester for 4 consecutive semesters (summer<br />

optional) based on available funds to cover tuition, fees and required books<br />

after other grants are applied. (depending on funds)<br />

Major: Registered Nursing, Practical Nursing<br />

CONSOL Energy, Inc. Scholarship<br />

CONSOL Energy, Inc. is the benefactor of the CONSOL Scholarship designed to enhance student<br />

achievement for an associate degree in the area of engineering or industrial technology. Applicants<br />

must be enrolled in 6+ credit hours and complete the FAFSA. Applicants must also turn in two<br />

letters of recommendation.<br />

GPA: 3.0<br />

Amount: Two- $1,000<br />

Major: Electronics Technology, Industrial Electronics or Mechanics,<br />

Civil Engineering<br />

Employee Scholarship<br />

The <strong>Belmont</strong> <strong>College</strong> Employee Scholarships are funded by <strong>College</strong> employees who donate to<br />

the Annual Employee Fund Drive. The goals of providing this institutional scholarship award are<br />

to encourage persistence within the higher education system in <strong>Belmont</strong>, Harrison, and Monroe<br />

Counties (Ohio) and to identify and support students who desire a college education and possess a<br />

proven record of academic excellence.<br />

To be eligible applicants must:<br />

• Must be enrolled at least half time (6+ hours)<br />

• Have successfully completed at least 30 Semester hours<br />

• Be a resident of <strong>Belmont</strong>, Harrison, or Monroe County<br />

• Complete the FAFSA<br />

GPA: 3.0<br />

Amount: Two- $500<br />

Major: All Degree Seeking Majors<br />

Application: General Application<br />

Gust Maistros Scholarship<br />

This scholarship is in honor of Gust Maistros, founder of Bell Nursing Home in St. Clairsville,<br />

Ohio. Nursing faculty submit nominations based on the following criteria: This scholarship is<br />

presented following completion of the first two semesters of study in the PN Program, and after the<br />

first semester of the PTN/TAN Program. Funds awarded must be used toward direct educational<br />

expenses. Applicants must:<br />

• Exhibit professional attitude and behavior<br />

• Submit an essay of at least 500 words (or more) on the topic of “The Importance of<br />

Bedside Nursing”<br />

GPA: 3.0<br />

Amount: Two- $500 (1 for LPN, 1 for TAN)<br />

Major: Practical Nursing, Transitional Nursing<br />

The Hess Corporation Scholarship<br />

Hess Corporation, a leading global independent energy company engaged in the exploration and<br />

production of crude oil and natural gas, is the benefactor of the Hess Corporation Scholarship. This<br />

scholarship is to be awarded to incoming and current students enrolled in a full and/or part-time<br />

associate degree or certificate program.<br />

Incoming Freshman Requirements:<br />

• GPA of 3.0 or better<br />

• Need for Financial Assistance<br />

The Nita C. Lewis Pathway to Nursing Scholarship<br />

The Nita C. Lewis Pathway to Nursing Scholarship was established by Mr. J.I. Lewis in memory of<br />

his wife, Nita, who served as a paramedic instructor for <strong>Belmont</strong> <strong>College</strong> (then <strong>Belmont</strong> Technical<br />

<strong>College</strong>) and was an outreach educator for <strong>Belmont</strong> County Emergency Medical Service. To be<br />

eligible for the scholarship, candidates must reside in <strong>Belmont</strong> County and be in pursuit of an<br />

associate degree in registered nursing or a certificate in practical nursing. Special consideration<br />

will be given to applicants who are non-traditional students and/or whose service as an EMT or as a<br />

Paramedic can be verified through the Ohio Department of Public Safety. In addition to the General<br />

Application, applicants must submit a short essay stating why they want to become a nurse.<br />

GPA: N/A<br />

Amount: The number and amount of the scholarship(s) are based on available funds.<br />

Mining Electro-Mechanical Maintenance Scholarship<br />

The M.E.-M.M.A. (Mining Electro-Mechanical Maintenance Association) Scholarship will be<br />

applied directly to the recipients account to be used to help meet the direct educational expenses<br />

of tuition/fees and books/supplies. Extra consideration shall be given to those candidates who have<br />

expressed interest or are currently employed in mining or mining related engineering occupations,<br />

but the scholarships are not restricted to these persons. To be eligible applicants must:<br />

• Have successfully completed 30 Semester credit hours in the program major<br />

• Demonstrate financial need by completion the FAFSA<br />

GPA: 3.0<br />

Amount: Two- $500<br />

Major: Electronics Technology, Industrial Electronics, Civil Engineering,<br />

Tooling & Machine, Welding Technology<br />

Application: General Application<br />

Project Best, Inc.<br />

Project Best, Inc. is a cooperative effort between labor and management in the Ohio Valley<br />

construction industry. Eligible applicants include employees or dependents of participating<br />

contractors and/or construction trade unions that plan to enter a degree-granting institution<br />

to pursue a course of study leading to an associate or baccalaureate degree. Awards are based<br />

on established academic achievement with criteria to be determined by the institution where<br />

application is made.<br />

GPA: N/A<br />

Amount: $2,000 divided by all who are eligible<br />

Major: Any non-certificate degree seeking major<br />

Application: Project Best Application<br />

Elizabeth J. Rubloff Scholarship<br />

This scholarship program is awarded each year to an LPN student and an ADN student (nominated<br />

by Faculty) who exemplify the following performance criteria:<br />

• Demonstrates competent bedside nursing care.<br />

• Applies theoretical concepts to clinical practice.<br />

• Maintains professional attitude and behavior.<br />

• Implements nurse-patient relationships.<br />

This award is presented following completion of the first semester of study in the LPN program and<br />

following the first two semesters in the ADN program.


GPA: N/A<br />

Amount: Two-as funds are available<br />

Major: LPN & ADN<br />

Application: Nominated by Nursing Faculty<br />

Senior Citizens Scholarship<br />

Senior citizens (persons who are 60 years of age or older) who are Ohio residents are granted a<br />

scholarship for all instructional fees (tuition) when enrolled in a regularly scheduled credit course<br />

on a space available basis. Verification of age may be requested.<br />

GPA: N/A<br />

Amount: Tuition only. Does not include fees, books or other expenses.<br />

Major: Any Major<br />

Application: See your academic advisor when registering to apply<br />

St. Clairsville Rotary Scholarship<br />

The St. Clairsville Rotary Scholarship provides educational financial assistance to residents of<br />

the St. Clairsville/Richland Township school district. The following criteria are used to determine<br />

eligibility.<br />

Applicants must be:<br />

• A resident of the St. Clairsville/Richland Township school district;<br />

• A high school graduate (or possess a GED);<br />

• Enrolled full-time in a degree-seeking program; and<br />

• In need of financial assistance as determined by the <strong>Belmont</strong> <strong>College</strong> Financial Aid Office.<br />

• The scholarship winner must attend one Rotary meeting to receive the scholarship monies. The<br />

<strong>Belmont</strong> staff will inform you of which meeting to attend to receive your scholarship check.<br />

GPA: N/A<br />

Amount: One- $500<br />

Major: Any degree seeking major<br />

Application: St. Clairsville Rotary Application<br />

Kimberly Taylor Memorial Scholarship<br />

This Scholarship honors the memory of Kim Taylor, an ADN student in the class of 1988. Nursing<br />

faculty will submit nominations based on the following criteria:<br />

• Manifest professional behavior<br />

• Exhibits competent clinical practice<br />

• Establishes therapeutic interactions<br />

• Develops self-awareness<br />

• Applies theoretical concepts to practice<br />

GPA: N/A<br />

Amount: One-Two - as funds are available<br />

Major: ADN<br />

Application: See a Nursing Faculty Member to apply<br />

Russell J. and Eleanor M. Woolman Scholarship<br />

Eligible students must be in a program or course that is not covered by Financial Aid.<br />

Can be used for Fire Science Courses, STNA, and Workforce Development courses.<br />

GPA: 3.75<br />
