WINTER JAZZ

WINTER JAZZ

Elifantree Mariehamn

Elifantree Mariehamn Winter Jazz for the 10th time! It is a great pleasure to wish all our guests both near and far welcome to yet another hot jazz event in the coolest time of the year. The Winter Jazz concept originates from Umbria and was introduced in Mariehamn in 2000. Now the same issue has spread all over the North and this has resulted in many co-operation projects. The Nordic Countries have always played a central role on Åland, and thanks to the Nordjazz project we are now able to invite, among others, Bugge Wesseltoft, the creator of unique trends in the fascinating contemporary Norwegian jazz. The Young Nordic Jazz Comets 2008 contest was won by the Islandic K Trio. The prize was a tour of the Nordic Countries, and Mariehamn is one of the natural stops on their tour. In the YNJC contest Finland was represented by Elifantree who takes over where their friends Wildbirds & Peacedrums from Gothenburg finished last year. We focus on our young local musicians, them including Fredrik Erlandsson, Edward Mattsson and Daniel Söderback, but we also offer music by renowned youths from abroad, such as Elifantree and Walking Quarters. It is also important for us to bring together musicians from the east and the west, as in the case of Sofia Finnilä and Henrik Mossberg Trio who will meet in a concert in church on their way to Kauniainen in Finland. Every time when jazz is played in Mariehamn, new band constellations are born. This year it will be interesting to hear what Petronella Wester has to offer with her new constellation at the two concerts at Park’s Bar. Park’s Bar has also played a central role in the development of the Winter Jazz event. In daytime, after work, young musicians invite you Photo: Eero Lähdesmäki to a jam. Nordens Institut offers the youngest guests a concert by Järnsläpp at the children’s Sunday event at the town library. This year Mariehamn X Winter Jazz is rounded up with our 10th anniversary celebrations. Coffee, cakes and beer are served to the guests and, what’s more, there will be music delicacies by two French-influenced trios; Whatclub and Sawadu. Whatclub comes from Mariehamn, Sawadu from Paris. Both bands have jazz roots, but are heading for new challenges. We keep on going with good old concepts, but try new ones too. Welcome to an exploration! Tom Eckerman Art Director Thank you! Without the wide support from our co-operation partners and sponsors it would not be possible to offer high-class programme on our Baltic Sea island. We would like to express our special thanks to our Finnish-Swedish funds that continuously have supported us in our bridge-building activities to bring together musicians from the east and the west. We are also very grateful for the investments made by local business enterprises. Thanks to them we are able to offer comfortable ferry trips, good accommodation and local visibility. We would also like to thank Åland Tourism Board.
