Supporting local
communities and
Ireland
Putting our responsibilities
to the communities we serve
at the heart of what we do

We are committed to
looking after our customers.
One way we do this is by making
your money go further and
offering better quality products
at more affordable prices.
Another way is by contributing as
much as possible to our local
communities, providing local
jobs and services and
supporting local causes.
Bringing more
to your Community
Being a good neighbour is at the
heart of what we do and that’s
why community support and
involvement is an integral part
of the way we do business.
This brochure explains how we
bring more to our community.
More Customers and More Jobs!
Tesco is Ireland’s favourite retailer with
currently over 130 stores nationwide,
each one of which is an important part
of its local community. We employ over
14,000 people in Ireland.
more
More suited to you:
We integrate with all types of communities.
Our stores have a variety of designs,
each tailored to its specific site and the
appropriate needs of that community.
More convenient
for you:
Our stores are open when you need them.
Most of our stores open from 8am to 10pm
with some 24 hour stores located where they
are needed.
More value and
choice for you:
Tesco stores offer a wide choice of
grocery products at the best prices. And,
we also have clothing, electrical & home
entertainment goods, hardware, toys,
stationery and much, much more.
More services for you:
We work hard to bring our customers great
value services, including Tesco Mobile, Tesco
Car Insurance and the Tesco Credit Card.
We also offer competitive petrol prices in
selected locations nationwide.
More local for you:
With Tesco stores located in local
communities you can shop locally rather
than travelling long distances. This benefits
your local economy, creating a positive
knock-on effect for local businesses.
and more aware
Tesco is committed to becoming a zero
carbon business by 2050. We are also proud
to have over 90% of our waste diverted from
landfill.
Job Opportunities
Supporting local communities
Great opportunities
with Tesco
Tesco brings great
opportunities to your
community. As one of
the largest employers
in Ireland, we provide fulfilling
jobs and great careers
for over 14,000 people.
This helps to grow the local
economies of the communities
in which we operate.
Great Careers
At Tesco we encourage our
staff members to build their
careers with us. Through our
Store Manager Development
Programme we develop talent
and offer everyone the
opportunity to grow into
more senior roles. Our
Graduate
Programmes fast
track high potential
graduates into
management
positions while
our Options
Programme helps
employees at all
levels to develop their
skills and progress
with their careers.
their career with us. Staff members can avail
healthcare and car insurance.
can take part in our Save as You Earn scheme
each year when it launches – this is a risk free
scheme with the option to buy Tesco shares at a
discounted price.
Great Bonuses
After two years with Tesco, you can join our
Share Bonus scheme when it launches. This
gives you the equivalent of a percentage of
your annual wage as free shares or as cash.
Great Pension
After three years with Tesco, you can join
the Tesco Pension Scheme and avail of
the Additional Voluntary Contribution
Great Equality
One of the great core values at
Tesco is that we trust and respect
each other. As a company,
we believe in diversity and
we want everyone to feel
welcome to work with us
regardless of age, sex,
disability, ethnicity,
belief or sexual
orientation.

Supporting Suppliers
Supporting local communities
At Tesco we work with the very best
local Irish suppliers. We are the biggest
supporter of the Irish food industry and
each year we buy over €2 billion worth
of Irish food for our stores here in Ireland
and around the world.
Supporting Customers
Many customers come to Tesco because
they know we stock a wide range of locally
supplied Irish products, from Irish vegetables
and meat to bread and milk.
Supporting Irish Growers
We’re committed to providing customers with
the best local produce available. 80% of fresh
seasonal produce is sourced from Irish farms
and delivered to our stores less than 24 hours
after harvesting. Working with local growers, we
have helped replace previously imported onions
and peppers during the Irish growing season.
Supporting Irish Milk
and Meat
Over 11,000 farm families supply their
produce to Tesco. Every drop of our fresh
milk is from Irish farms as is 100% of our
fresh beef, fresh lamb and fresh pork. We
have also worked with the Certified Irish Angus
Producers Group promoting and selling fresh
Irish Aberdeen Angus Beef.
Supporting Irish Exports
From Shanghai to Sheffield and from Prague
to Phoenix, €655m worth of Irish food is
exported to our stores around the world
every year. This makes us a bigger destination
for Irish food than France, Germany or the US.
Supporting Small
Local Suppliers
Our local Tesco Roadshows provide the perfect
opportunity for small, local suppliers to meet
with, and talk to, our buyers and technical
team. This year 30 small local suppliers are now
supplying their products to us as a result of our
roadshows.
In support of
Irish suppliers
Some of our many Irish suppliers include Matt Foley of
Foley’s Tomatoes, Rush, Co. Dublin. Pictured left is
and above left is Gabriel Hoey of Country Crest in
North Co. Dublin.

The Local Economy
Supporting local communities
Benefiting local
economies
Our stores benefit local economies;
encouraging investment, supporting local
suppliers and creating competition. We
currently have over 130 stores nationwide,
the majority of which are located in town
centres or edge of centre sites.
Our stores are tailored to meet the shopping
needs of the local community and range
from small convenience Tesco Express stores
through to the larger Tesco Extra stores.
This means our customers can shop locally
rather than travelling long distances. Keeping
more shoppers in a town centre means more
potential customers for other stores too.
Here are some examples of how we have
benefited local economies.
Benefiting Naas
“
“ “
The arrival of Tesco Monread is a boost
of forward confidence in Retail Naas
by an international company. The new
jobs at this time, will keep locals from
emigrating and their employment will
contribute to the national economy,
whilst Community Naas, especially
youth, has already benefitted from
support measures adopted by the
company.”
Councillor Seamie Moore,
Mayor of Naas
Benefiting Claremorris
I would like to reiterate the positive
impact Tesco has made in the town.
There has been a marked increase in the
number of shoppers visiting Claremorris
since the opening of your store; we also
think that Claremorris can now give the
consumer a better selection of shopping
which has been very much enhanced
by your store. In these difficult times
we must also acknowledge the quality
employment that has been created
for people in Claremorris and the
surrounding areas also.”
James Kean (President) and
Sheila Hunt (CEO) Claremorris Chamber
Benefiting Wexford
One of the most positive events in the
commercial life of Wexford Town in
recent years was the arrival of Tesco on
the old Pierces Foundry site.
The psychological effect of replacing
the foundry which was the breadwinner
for many families since the middle of
the 19th century with a new modern
store providing hundreds of jobs is
immeasurable.”
Alderman Padge Reck, M.C.C., P.C

Supporting Communities
Supporting local communities
Tesco stores are an important part
of hundreds of communities across
Ireland. We are committed to making
a positive contribution to these
communities, not only by providing
local employment and by supporting
local suppliers, but by helping local
schools, clubs, charities, environmental
groups and community causes.
Helping through
Community
Champions
In 2009 we began to introduce
Community Champions into our stores
and at present we have over 20 of them
working in communities nationwide.
Each Community Champion works with
local groups, schools and sports clubs
supporting fundraising events and
awareness drives.
Helping Schools
and Clubs
Since 1998, we have donated over €15
million worth of equipment to Irish
schools and clubs through our Tesco for
Schools & Clubs initiative, supporting
numerous sports clubs and schools
around the country.
Helping Charities
Every two years our staff choose an Irish
charity to be our Charity of the Year.
Since 2001, our customers and staff
have supported 7 charities raising over
€9 million. We also support other local
charities and emergency appeals.
“
Helping Ladies GAA
We are proud sponsors of the Ladies
Gaelic Football All Ireland Club
Championship. This is the largest female
participation sport in Ireland with over
1,000 clubs.
Tesco is a focal point for us in meeting
large groups of people and offering our
services and knowledge on all aspects of
fire safety in the home.
Tesco gave us the opportunity of meeting
the most vulnerable in the community
through your community champion.
We know Tesco is there for us”.
Green
Commitment
At Tesco we put our responsibilities
to the communities we serve at the
heart of what we do. This includes
caring for the environment, and
we believe that as a large business
we have an important role to play
in helping to minimise climate
change in Ireland, and worldwide.
2007 saw the launch
of our Strategy on
the Environment and
Carbon Reduction
which gave details of
our plans to minimise
our carbon footprint.
October 2007
Green
Recycling Days
In October 2007
we held our first
Electrical Recycling
Day in our Tullamore
store. Since 2007
we have collected
over 800 tonnes of
electrical waste, the
equivalent of 400,000
hairdryers.
Our key environmental target is
to become a zero carbon
business by 2050.
Here’s an update on how our
Climate Change journey has
gone in Ireland so far:
May 2008
Green
Distribution
In May 2008, we
introduced a fleet of
double-decker trucks
into our distribution
network. These
trucks allow us to
deliver more goods in
one journey, reducing
mileage and the
carbon footprint of
our store deliveries.
September
2008
Green
Labelling
We became the
first supermarket in
Ireland to introduce
carbon labels on a
selected range of our
own-brand products
in 2008.
October 2008
Green Store
In October 2008
we opened the first
Passiv Haus certified
environmental store
in Ireland, located
in Tramore, County
Waterford. The store
uses 45% less energy
than a conventional
supermarket, saving
420 tonnes of CO 2
each year.
January 2009
Green
Packaging
Recycling
In January 2010 we
began a project to
reduce the amount
of waste going to
landfill and increase
the amount of waste
that we recycle in our
stores. At present we
recycle over 90% of
our waste produced
in stores.
November 2010
Green Power
In November 2010 we
received permission
to construct our first
wind turbine at our
distribution centre
in Donabate, County
Dublin.
In 2011 we introduced
Energy Champions
into our stores. Our
Energy Champions
monitor energy
efficiency and help
their colleagues
minimise energy use
wherever possible.

and finally
being neighbourly
Every Tesco store is a good neighbour. When
we identify a site for a new Tesco store the
first thing we do is meet our neighbours and
listen to what they have to say.
If people tell us, for example, that deliveries
are creating congestion we will adjust
delivery times so that they do not clash with
busy periods such as the school run.
Being Respectful
Noise can be a nuisance and we have found several
ways to make our deliveries quieter, including
switching off fridges in lorries when they arrive at
stores and automatically cutting off the radio when
the cab door opens. A new low-noise delivery cage
with plastic components cuts noise and we have
begun using a low-noise tail lift too.
Being Responsible
Tesco operates a ‘Think 25’ policy around the sale
of alcohol in our stores. This means that our staff
members are trained to ask a customer for an
acceptable proof of age if they appear to be aged 25
or under when purchasing alcohol.
“
As
the Community Garda
in Mitchelstown I have an
involvement and interaction
with a large number of voluntary
organisations, local agencies and
various committees.
It is widely acknowledged and
appreciated that Tesco is making
a very positive contribution
within the community in terms of
supporting local worthy projects.
In my opinion Tesco has
become an integral part of
our community. Long may the
goodwill and mutual support
continue.”
